Can see on the new smart meter we’re using about £130 per week which is more or less the amount they’ve been direct debiting and not eating into the 2 grand of built of credit. They’ll have to drop that monthly amount at some point right, it’s supposed to level out throughout the year not just charge you the depths of winter usage all year round?

The new higher cap starts in March and the government £66 a month help ends as well so I'm guessing your credit will soon disappear

Why could a company be charging you at all when they're already sat on two grand of your families money? Let alone over £500 a month. Absolute fucking state of it.
April will be interesting, assumption prices will go up again however didn't wholesale prices fall a few months ago? Fully appreciate in a private market there's no way we're not going to get shafted

Was away for a week in December, bill wasn't too bad as a result...£200 for the last 27 days. Being cold when in the house on my own seems to be working!

The smart meter hasn’t sent a gas reading since they installed it on 14/12, so they haven’t charged us for gas in the bill I just received. I can’t give a manual reading either until the smart meter sends is first reading. That’s handy

Watching my gas meter I use about 45/55 kWh daily in these colder months. House stays at 17-20c, with heating kicking in for possible 8 hours a day (if drops below 18.5c). Currently paying little over £100 a month for gas based on my old usage (so probably now in credit).

British Gas have always taken our Direct Debit payment on the 1st of the month with no problems for years. Our Jan 1st payment still hasn't been taken so ring them in the usual way at 8am to try and find out why.
The lady takes my details and then says "Please can you confirm your account number with me again please", I read it out and she says "Ok sir you're actually now a British Gas Classic customer so I can't help you and will have to transfer you to a different person".
What?!
I ask her how I had no idea this was a thing and was literally calling the number given with my last bill, 'so I'm with a different company now?'.... "No you are still with British Gas it's just a different department so I can't access your account"
So she transfers me and I'm onto "British Gas Classic". The lady there umms and ahhs about why my bill hasn't come out and then says 'i can see here you are actually on our new energy platform so I'll transfer you to a different team ".
45mins on hold and then I'm with an Indian call center. 2 minutes in to speaking to her the line just disconnects and I'm all the way back to the beginning.
What fresh hell is this?

Has anyone else reduced their direct debit as low as possible and then started paying their bills / topping up their accounts with credit cards? I've read a few articles on this, and it seems like a no-brainer, so I'm not sure why I hadn't thought of it before.
I'm now earning extra Virgin / Amex points each month rather than just seeing the money go out via direct debit. It's a bit risky and relies on you clearing the balance each month, but at least you might enjoy some cheap flights/hotels/ days out in the future to at least get some benefit from these crazy bills.
I'm not sure if all providers let you do this, but Octopus allow you to top up your account with a credit card.

Ha, jesus I was going to whinge about our £200 december gas bill. £512 is ludicrous
edit - electricity usage was about £90, apparently.

We’re at a little under £400 a month for gas and electric. My smart meter depresses me every time I see it.

I was wrong before...there was a week unbilled. Looks like £270 overall, £120 electricity, £150 gas.

I think I need a new boiler or something is up with my heating. It was £170 for gas and almost nothing is gas except for the heating and I didn't even use it all that much. A few hours a days absolute max and often not even used. Electric was £110 ish.

But also, a few hours a day will use a fair chunk of gas so it wouldn't surprise me if it was broadly right.

I clocked that yesterday too.
Need to go through it all properly, but our weekly shop (Lidl / Sainos split) somehow came out around 25 quid more expensive than it was pre-xmas :/

A few hours a days absolute max and often not even used. Electric was £110 ish. During the cold snap we had heating on for 90mins morning and 90mins evening. Was costing about a tenner in gas just for that. It's really fucking expensive! Our total DD for electricity and gas is £470/month Following up from my morning post above, finally spoke to British Gas earlier. They have moved to a new billing system which is why the didn't collect my DD. The lady couldn't tell me when they will take payment even when I described (like a twat) the DD guarantee that states they have to legally let me know if they are changing the date. I basically said I hope it won't be into next month as if so they'll be taking just shy of £1000 in one month. Fortunately it's fine for our budgeting but could fuck many people. She kept on saying "because you missed your January payment" which pissed me off and kept having to correct her that I've paid DD monthly for maybe 20 years and never missed a payment until they decided to roll out a new system right at the peak of all this high bill chaos and in doing so predictably fuck it all up.
