What's your minimum set as on the thermostat? I thought most people have it around 14 degs for the cutoff. I have it set to 18 but the most I've seen it hit is 14. I think you mean the lowest you've seen it hit is 14, which I think is the norm for the minimum setting.

Bloody hell, that's too cold. You're at risk of catching hyperthermia! You should set the minimum to 14 then at least it's got a fighting chance of getting to 18!!

I don't have an option of a minimum - I can switch it on or off (on a timer) and the thermostat lets you set a max.
It seems OK though to be honest.

Depends where your thermostat is though right, if there’s no radiator in the same room it’ll be hotter than the displayed temperature in every other room

True enough.
It’s in the kitchen with one radiator but it’s true that the study room is warmer.

I've found a way round the cold. I've rearranged meetings where I have to openly speak to people for when I'm in the office for 2 days a week. Rest of the time, I can just plod away on the laptop.
WHICH MEANS
I can do that in the pub. By the fire. Where I am right now!

Still cheaper to be in the pub than using electric heating! £3.50 a pint, couple of pints over a couple of hours. 7 quid. so about 3.50 an hour I guess.
But, it's a pub and beer!

I can imagine coffee shops etc also being stacked with people buying one coffee every few hours.

Old ladies using their bus pass to sit on board for 8 hours a day to keep warm, which Rees Mogg finds uplifting

Ah yes, forgot about that. It's a pretty damning indictment that I am not particularly unhappy that my mum is in hospital at the moment (now I know she's fine). She's warm, being fed 3 times a day and being well looked after.

Never imagined this scenario at all when growing up.
First day with the new meter yesterday, final figures came in at £35. Less than 4 quid was leccy, at least I got to prove to my wife that switching the lights off when I’m still sat in the room was a drop in the ocean

Are you sure the meter is right? That works out at over a grand a month.

Holy fucking Christ. I suspect mine wouldn't be dissimilar if the stat was on 22/23 as my wife wants. It would basically be running all the time.
I've been monitoring the daily usage on the boiler app, and by dropping the temperature to 16 when it's just me in the house, and then again at 8pm (as opposed to 10pm) seems to be saving 40%. That's definitely worth it imo. Amounts to nearly a fiver a day.

Hopefully once this cold spell passes we’ll not be burning as much gas

We’re not dropping the thermostat at night, set to 18.5 all day now. Don’t really want the kids dying of strep A. We’ve burned a tenner by the time we get up in the morning

I don't think that's how strep works.

I suspect a lot of people will be surprised. I’m on a meter so monitoring it constantly and despite being an absolute tight arse even when it was freezing I was still using a tenner A day to take the edge off and get it up to 16 ish degrees.
People will start moaning there direct debits we’re too low over summer!

My smart gas meter is still not giving readings to Octopus (was set up by British Gas but we were already with Octopus and switched the day we moved in, fuckers taking their time allowing it to become smart for another company) so I'm having to check manually as often as possible. I'm scared to check after having the heating on over the past couple of weeks...
Electricity for the past month was £127 which I don't think is too bad considering I work from home.

Just paid my 200 quid bill for this month, so I put the latest meter reading in. Just in credit at 63 quid, which is good considering I've had to blast the electric heating during that cold snap. It's going down in general but not as fast as I thought it would, thank fuck.

Revelling in whacking the thermostat up to 22 and having the fire on!

Meanwhile I haven't had the temp in our house above 17.5 since the heating season started. Currently at 14.5 and making do. Kind of used to it now.
Treated ourselves to like 4 hours worth of radiators every day last week when it was freezing and were averaging £20/day... Today will come in at about £12. £250 month Cashback for being cold. Kerching

It's miserable innit. So nice being warm, I'm sat in a t-shirt, hands and feet aren't vaguely numb. And you've got to remember, for the most part, we are the lucky ones who can mostly afford it.

When we got the power back on our central heating pump seems to have reset from 3 bars of power to 1. I left it there as the rads seemed to heat up ok, albeit more slowly - but apparently using like half the gas we were paying for previously according to the smart meter?
