It has been a while. I have been returning to a few bands I hadn't listened to in quite a bit. Among them Dredg.

In times of trouble and stress, I turn to whiskey and punk rock...
And it's far too early for spirits.

Ostinato: I think I stumbled across them back when I was looking for bands similar to Isis. So I often ended up with Post Rock rather than what I was looking for.

Brian Gibson - Thumper
Brian Gibson (Lightning Bolt/Wizardzz/Megasus) and the soundtrack to Thumper, a rhythm violence game. What's not to like? (Except for my inability to embed the full YouTube playlist, of course.)

Simple Minds Live in the city of light. This is a band on top of their game, stunning performances of many great tracks including Ghostdacing, East at Easter, Big Sleep, Book of brilliant things (sublime version), Oh jungleland et al. The only real negative is no Forbes on Bass, even with that it is one of my fav albums of all time.

The Guardians Holiday Special really got me intrigued about the Old 97s who I'd never listened to before (despite having a very large soft spot for alt country/ country rock) and I'm enjoying listening to the huge amount of music they have released. That Christmas song they wrote for the special is a daily listen with the kid too, a lot of fun.

Pink Floyd Obscured by clouds. This is a great and perhaps overlooked album in their catalogue, it is the Album that proceeds DSoTM and I think you can hear that.

mebe a banging edm/christmas carol mash up wasn't your thing, that's alright, you wanna bluesy tune about one of santa's little helpers conspiring with rudolph to get santa sent down for trafficking so he can get giggitty with Mrs Claus? yeah you do:
merry christmas ya filthy animals, 2
ps. also includes santa getting handsy with the lady reindeer, so unless you want to ruin christmas, probably be careful playing around young kids. pretty sure I discovered this on the RPS forum, but don't you dare judge us RPS asylum seekers, I've seen the random musings thread

This has some great comedy timing. But also some surprisingly, genuinely, lovely melody.
I'm going to listen to more of their stuff.

It's unlikely anyone really cares but here's a playlist of new stuff I listened to, and enjoyed, in 2022. mostly metal, quite a bit of doom metal and a bit of black metal, but also some great synthwave and electronica
If I had to pick a favourite, well, there's a few
Chat Pile - 'God's Country' is up there, essentially falling in a weird Venn overlap of early Swans, Korn and Big Black. It's ugly but amazing.
Darkthrone - 'Astral Fortress' is a really nice but of blackened doom metal, beach Celtic Frost vibes. Pretty much standard latterday Darkthrone. It's unoriginal but it's like slipping on a comfy pair of hiking boots.
Ultha - 'All That Has Never Been True' is a blistering, harrowing bit of atmospheric black metal. Unusual transitions really give it impact.
Zeal and Ardor's mix of various metal styles and blues / gospel continues to be highly enjoyable. Very diverse album.
Alex & Tokyo Rose's 'Akuma 3' album is a really nice but of 90's inflected synthwave, well worth a listen for fans of 90's dance music.
Monolithe - 'Kosmodron' is a really tasteful but of doom metal, heavy slow riffs but with a surprisingly clean sound, backed up with some nice synths.
I could witter on, but those are the ones that come to mind as my favourites at the moment. Good year for music really

I've been gradually getting more and more into black midi. This performance is just amazing, a group of musicians at the top of their game and just loving it (skip past the extremely awkward interview at the start):
