I tried playing it on a real N64 some fifteen years ago (so very long after release). The horrendous framerate and controls put me off very quickly.
But then, I just finished System Shock with classic controls again, and it was as good as always, so... I'm not one to talk.
Of course, unlike SS, I have no nostalgia here to help me here. And I didn't enjoy Perfect Dark on XBLA much either. But still, I'll give it a chance. After all, it's gotta come to Game Pass, right?

Yeah, pretty much. Also should be 60fps.

You never know, it might be the Rare remaster that got stopped by Nintendo.

Well, same game anyhow.
Also I just realized that all the Rare-style shooters I've played (really just Perfect Dark and Timesplitters 2), I have not enjoyed. So maybe it's a sign that I should actually stay away from this.

You never know, it might be the Rare remaster that got stopped by Nintendo. Blurb in the article say this: At the moment, details on whatever this game is are thin on the ground as we haven't yet picked up a Microsoft Store page for the game, so we can't say if this is a remake, remaster, or rerelease. The achievements are also different from the cancelled XBLA GoldenEye 007 remake that leaked last year. But they could have just redone them. The tell this is real is that BIGSheep, who works for Rare, has achievements for it.

Still have my N64, RamPak and Perfect Dark boxed in the loft. I daren't go back to it now for fear of destroying some good memories.
I think this era of early 3D, with a few exceptions, suffers more than pixel art stuff when revisited. Sure, at the time it was a revelation but higher res/better frame rates don't hide the barren feel to many games that simply had no option but to keep things simple back then.
I'd be interested to show my kids how things looked back in the day, but I can't imagine they would be too taken with Goldeneye - maybe the MP would be fun, though we'd see a return of those 'screen-looking' tantrums of old!

I played the leaked Xbox Goldeneye on PC not long ago and it was really great. Hi-res, smooth framerate – all it needs basically. Would be great to get an official release.

Yeah, this is looking more likely to be the actual N64 version, rather than the 360 version that got canned. There's clearly been some agreement between Microsoft and Nintendo, given Rare games are coming to the Switch's N64 library, which is nice. It might mean it'll appear on Switch too.
However, didn't we learn that MGM had all kinds of rules in place for new 007 games, like using the up-to-date actor, cars and such. Not only does that explain Activision's 'remake', but it would reinforce the idea of this being a port, rather than a remaster or remake.
Best I would hope for is a 720p output with an unlocked frame rate. I imagine everything else will be unchanged.

Craig's contract is up, so they very well couldn't use an up to date Bond actor unless they announced him soon. So if there's ever a time to slip through that loophole, it's now.

It really hasn't aged very well, the gameplay is dreadful by today's standards as is the level design.
Probably best to leave the memory as a fond one in the past.

Good call! Also, it was Nintendo that requested a review of the game's rating in Germany last year, which saw the game 'unbanned' from sale. So its surely a multi-platform thing. I wonder if it'll be on Playstation as well?

Perfect Dark XBLA was already running at a native 1080p, MSAA 4X and 60fps on the freaking Xbox 360. They could probably run it at 16K or something on the Series X. And maybe 8K on the Series S. Though that would be overkill.

The only group that has the say is EON. They canned the original release of the HD Goldeneye as Activision had no issue with the HD release especially as they had the license and like I said Nintendo have no say in any of these talks, they just published the original release. As there are no more films out with Craig this would seem like the right opportunity before a new actor is announced.

They could make loads of very quick and nice changes to it, but its depends on MGM and how quickly this has all come together.

Jambowayoh You're probably right, but do we officially know when or if Nintendo has lost publishing rights?

Probably when MS bought Rare. They had no issue porting the Banjos or Perfect Dark. The film rights were the main hurdle with Bond.

Jambowayoh You're probably right, but do we officially know when or if Nintendo has lost publishing rights? From what I've read and seen from those in the know those rights ceased as soon as EA got the license to Bond for Tomorrow never Dies back in the 90s. As of then it didn't matter that Rare, who were a second party dev and not owned by them outright, made Goldeneye. The only company that matters is EON and they are fucking weird with their conditions if you obtain the license.

I wonder if it will be released right after the event. My Game Pass will expire in exactly one month... and I probably won't renew until December at the least.

Maybe just Xbox. MS seem to have cooled on switch versions.

Jeff Grubb saying that game was supposed to come out earlier before but the Russian/ Ukraine war put MS and Nintendo off which would suggest a Switch version as well then if true.

If this is getting remastered, I want my DF2 - Jedi Knight remaster. I played both of those games to death at the time, and they were great examples of console fps and pc fps.

Probably when MS bought Rare. They had no issue porting the Banjos or Perfect Dark. The film rights were the main hurdle with Bond. No, it was one of the Nintendo board members who crushed it. Everyone else, rights holders included, had already given the okay. Was in some article that accompanied the Xbox leak that interviewed one of the people who had worked on it.
