Whitworth actually developed a method for producing perfectly flat granite plates, which arguably is the foundation of metrology and precision machining. So cut him some slack. Although he probably hated slack.

I have just started playing warhammer, it is doing my fucking head in, what a mess of systems. "If a 1mm thick line passes within 1 inch of a model" etc.
I fucking hate imperial measurements, not least when they use those stupid symbols that I can never remember. Every time I see 2" or 2' I always need to google it or end up in some Spinal Tap fiasco.
And don't get me stated on fluid ounces such are apparently a size not weight, or a cup when every fucking cup in my kitchen is a different size
Edit. At least the warhammer one is easy, it is my neatness brain that hates it, it is not really confusing in that one

And don't get me stated on fluid ounces such are apparently a size not weight, or a cup when every fucking cup in my kitchen is a different size Cooking with American recipes is fraught with peril too. Like, what is an American tablespoon? "Mix in one tablespoon of cumin." The full jar that I just bought doesn't amount to a full tablespoon, so that can't be right.
A tablespoon of cumin is gonna blow any meal right out of the water.

I think it's a typo. It should read "Mix in one tablespoon of cum in."

Decimalising imperial measures makes me a right snooty bitch, can’t stand it when someone writes 1.125” or 4.5lb

Maybe start off with 0.1 TBSP cumin and add more to taste?
