Induction hobs are pretty great at boiling water quickly. Would be curious to see if there's a massive difference in energy usage between that and a regular electric kettle.
Think I'd rather give up drinking hot drinks than wait for a gas hob to boil water.

Stretching the remit of this thread, but where do people stand on hot water taps?
We have one at work, which seems to make sense although it has been broke for the last week (kettles don't break and if they do, it's £20 for a very decent new one). But yeah, I don't think they are justified in a domestic setting, all that bull about paying for themselves after 8 years..
Nice show off thing to have when people come over I suppose.

I've never had a problem with a kettle. If it breaks on Xmas day I boil water in a pan until the shops open and I buy another kettle for 30 quid. If my fancy tap breaks I probably have to order a new one, take a day off work and wait in all day for someone to install a new one. For what.. 120quid or something? Kettles win.

Yep. Boiling water taps are a massively unnecessary thing.

Induction hobs are amazing, I’ll never go back. Only 1% of American houses have them though. I think they just like burning stuff too much

Except it isn't. Sort of warm-ish, at least not hot enough to get any tea to come out of the teabag at any appreciable rate. Elf and safety gone mad I expect.

So, UK plugs are the best? They're certainly the biggest. And Japan has 2 different electrical grids running at different voltages. It's really dumb, and makes for a bit of a nightmare when one side of the country doesn't have enough power, but can't easily get it from the other side of the country. Luckily most modern devices can handle both, so you don't really have to worry about it when shopping anymore. I think the lesson is that people will always bitch about everything. China, Japan, most of Asia are pretty fond of being able to boil water in a jug. Everyone in japan has big thermos-type jugs so that they only have to boil the water once or twice a day. Not sure if those have become a thing in the UK or not. We tend to boil the kettle when we wake up, and then just use the water from the jug for the rest of the day... unless i go nuts on the coffee and we have to boil it again in the afternoon.

I think it's probably worth accepting the Americans are just wrong. Spelling, dates, electricity, elections, gun laws, ammo caliber, driving on the wrong side of the road, no tea, a hundred types of cheese that all taste the same, Florida... (I'm kidding, of course) I mean these are all very valid points. Not least the fucking date thing. The date thing puzzles me. The US fetishises over its military way more than any other western country and the US military binned mm-dd, yyyy ages ago, yet the US public stick with the stupid format.

@bill but then the water is not actually boiling, problematic for English Breakfast tea (see random rants thread). Fine for coffee and herbal tea I suspect.

At least we can all agree that left hand drive makes more sense. Steady on. I mean, most of us are right handed, makes sense because all the important controls are on the right side of the driver.

For example, one of my cars has the gear controls on the right hand and the other on the left. And on the bike, it's on my left foot.

Makes more sense to keep your dominant hand on the wheel when changing gears no

Also who still drives a manual these day? Changing gears by hand is so 20th century.

Fucking with the radio or the TomTom app rather than changing gears then Steering wheel controls... But if I did, those would be on my left in both cars, as they're both right hand drive with a centre console to the left of the driver.

The argument above was for LHD cars because those controls are on your right side and most people are right handed, I was pointing out that the only important control in your hands is the steering wheel not the buttons on the console

Seeing how modern cars seem to have an ipad interface to do absolutely everything, I don’t really see how that would be more convenient with my left hand.
How do the stalks work for you guys, is the right hand stalk only for indicating and headlights?

The real reason has already been given: it freed up the rider's dominant arm to fight oncoming.
We're hardly going to move their entire road infrastructure to the other side of the road because we invented ipads.

I hate the iPadisation of the cockpit, touchscreens are so shit and distracting compared to physical controls.

I think both are equally fine. Switching between them is a pita, though, unless you have extensive experience with both.

RHD was chosen to allow you to whip horses without hitting pedestrians wasn’t it?
I don’t see how iPad interfaces work for any hand, how are you supposed to touch the right things when your car’s bumping around? Idrive style wheel with a screen just below the windscreen seems like the ideal solution

How do the stalks work for you guys, is the right hand stalk only for indicating and headlights? The right hand stalk on mine only controls the gears, so I use it when starting out, or when coming to a complete stop. Otherwise, it's basically inactive. Lights and wipers are automatic and the indicators are on the left stalk. So to do anything other than turn the car, I need only take my left hand off the wheel, leaving - as elstoof says - my dominant hand on the wheel at all times.

I always read car reviews going on about British roads, are they really that much worse than neighbouring countries?

They're generally better imho. Some of the roads in the US and Europe are atrocious. They just tend to be very narrow and windy and have fun hazards like sheep and pheasants in the middle of the road. If you're in the countryside that is.
Then again, I haven't driven in 10 years, so I still assume cars have radios, manual gears, tactile buttons, steering wheels etc... and I'm probably pretty out of touch.
