I don’t think we’re going to have a repeat to be honest. It would be nice if it was someone other than Biden (even though he’s done far better than I thought he would), but there’s not that uncertainty about a Trump presidency like there was in 2016, and his 2020 results were the natural boost for the incumbent. They’re pinning most of their hopes on arbitrary scandals like hyping people up on border security and Hunter Biden and that guy who didn’t tell anyone he was in hospital, but it’s all a worn playbook and/or blowing up on them. Hunter showing up to the hearing the other day threw almost everyone off guard, and the abortion backlash is still going on, despite the R’s best efforts to ignore it.
If anything’s going to sway it, it’s going to be the Israel/Palestine situation and all the Supreme Court and legal cases going on. Or Trump could die or something, even outside of typical internet hyperbole there’s clearly something wrong with him at the moment.

I try not to pay too much attention to him, expended way too much energy last time. I just have to hope that sanity prevails.

I'm not sure I'd mispronounce "slaves" as "slates" even when very, very drunk.

Apparently Iowa is a bit of an odd place, so not always that representative. Though I think it's pretty clear that he's going to win.
I'm kinda more worried about DeSantis getting second, though due to the aforementioned oddness that might not mean anything in the next state.

Reading the article on the BBC it's less concerning that he won, but that the majority of people who turned out believe Trump won (and had stolen) the election last time, and amongst his supporters it was 90%. How can people be so utterly thick?

DeSantis has dropped out. Offered a vice presidency perhaps?

Nah, they were talking about it on Americast; given how right wing Iowa is, squeaking a weak second place after spending the cash he did and with the evangelical backing he had, it doesn’t bode well for him in the rest of the country.

He has endorsed Trump, too.
This isn't good.

Churchill also didn't say 'You can always rely on America to do the right thing, once it has exhausted every other possibility'. That was a very long time ago.

The more it comes down to a straight someone Vs Trump, Haley I guess, the better it gets. They no longer need to spend all that time hedging and just tear the leather off each other.

The quote doesn't even work whoever said it, he's not continuing, he's giving up, the opposite of what it's about.
He really is a fucking moron. Anyway every other possible Republican candidate is going to end up supporting Trump, nothing (other than death, fingers crossed) will stop him being their man on the ballot.

He has endorsed Trump, too. This isn't good. I'd be more surprised if he hadn't, honestly. They know how to fall in line, they'd endorse a cat's hairball if they thought it'd give the party the presidency...

Who else would DeSantis endorse? His main argument for the nomination was "I'm not Trump but I'll do most of the same things that Trump does except more", which nobody wanted when they could see Trump standing right behind him.
At least Haley presents herself as an actual alternative. But she's not going to win either, because Republicans want Trump. They are basically a cult at this point.

There’s some semi-credible rumours that Michelle Obama might run which would be pretty awesome.

A lot of DeSantis supporters don’t like Trump that much, so him withdrawing could end up closing the gap between him and Haley. As much as he likes to paint Iowa as a big win, it was far from a walkover and doesn’t show much in the way of shifting his base. Moderates and young voters didn’t favor him, nor did most single issue voters. It was also a super low turnout, which makes percentage differences look bigger. NH will really be the bellwether to watch.

DeSantis dropping out is basically as clear a signal as you can get that focusing on 'woke' issues is not enough. It's not enough to drive people to vote. We've seen it time and again, even here, yet it's the one thing the Tories fall back on because it's the one thing that they haven't royally fucked up
Also feel if Michelle Obama does run, then you might as well hand the Presidency to Trump. Nothing is gonna galvanise those voters more.

True, but wouldn't it also galvanise young, liberal-minded voters who look at Biden and shrug apathetically?

I think she'd probably be a net positive. But it's hard to know; candidates can sound like a great idea on paper, but when they actually run and people start paying attention, all the baggage comes out.

I dunno, feels like one of those "too good to be true" things. (re: Michelle Obama) Sigh, really? I mean I know the US loves its political dynasties and basically longs for its own royal family, but maybe it would be better to appoint leaders based on merit rather than family name.

Well yeah, the dynasty thing is one of the biggest negatives about her.
But people did love her! Maybe even more than her husband! So regardless of whether people *should* be enthusiastic about another big name dropping into the race, I think they'd be more enthusiastic about her than Biden.

Her being Obama’s wife doesn’t mean she has no merit beyond that. She’s a brilliant woman and a very credible leader. Perhaps more so than Obama was.

A Michelle Obama presidency sounds like something that would happen in the good universe that we seem to so rarely occupy. The chances of the US voting another black person as President at this time seem fairly slime, even slimmer if it is a black woman. Also, pretty certain she has been dismissive of the suggestion in the past.
Feels inevitable that the Democrats will be stuck with Biden (which, on paper, shouldn't be a bad thing, as his time in office seems to have been mostly a success in almost all areas... besides his popularity).
