Guess if convict based on moral interpretation rather than legal interpretation that gives a whole load of other problems. The kid deserves to be punished. You cannot take an AR into an open street, where there is trouble and not think this is a bad idea. He wanted to hurt people that night, no question. Why do it otherwise. But we don't deal in what ifs or thought's that occur to people. We deal with the actual actions and legal interpretation of those actions.
But how do you deal with it if technically is legal?

Obviously it's impossible to know. But personally I think "stupid teenager wants to look tough, does stupid thing by joining volatile situation, completely panics and ends up getting people killed" is as likely an explanation as him literally going to hunt people down.
Even the "he tried to engineer a situation in which he could claim self-defence" theory is giving him far more credit (and intelligence) than he deserves.
Obviously "teenager is fucking moron" is not an excuse, but to me it's a likelier explanation.

It's just the whole thing behind it, the owning of the libs, the cheering of an underage vigilante as a patriot and a hero, the optics of another white guy being giving a slap on the wrists and using that alpha male stance of going in with an AR rifle to a zone where he was not required and believing himself above and in tandem with the law and having an outcome which confirms all of his beliefs. All of it is fucking despicable and we all know despite the talk of being under threat and self defense and the interpretation of the law, if this was a black kid the outcome would have been massively different. Well said. It's a systemic issue in the US that's been brought out in the daylight. Of course the white power people will lionize the little shit, he's an illustration of everything they want. Unequal rights. The videos where he walks past the police after having killed people, where he walks up to them for protection. It's so scary. |

I kinda think "teen does something stupid" is pretty far removed from "teen organises to have assault rifle available while travelling to riots from out of state and then proceeds to kill people with it".
He may not be the cleverest person in the world but I can't believe he didn't consciously contemplate something like this happening.
