Ugh, it's for the New York porn star payoff thing. I was hoping for something more... I dunno, substantial. Like the election tampering thing in Georgia. Oh well, small victories. But it's going to make him even more annoying, just you wait. There was a big development in the Special Counsel investigation regarding obstruction of justice and mishandling of classified materials too. A judge forcing one of Trump's lawyers to testify in front of grand jury as he has enough evidence to show a crime was committed. And news out of a second phone call from Trump pressuring an official in the Georgia investigation too. Does feel like there was a big jump in the walls closing in, but no doubt it will drag out for a long time yet. I am hopeful for the Georgia thing. But the other stuff feels pretty weak sauce to me. Like, out of all the shit he's done, prosecutors are going to get him on... improperly categorising a hush payment? And improperly storing some documents? Feels like a reach imo.

Doesn’t matter how they get Capone, so long as they get Capone.
I don’t want to flatter him with the Capone comparison though.

I don't think Trump will ever see the inside of a jail cell. He'll be dead before it happens.
Would love to be wrong, though.

Calling the classified documents case "improper storage" is a bit like calling the war in Ukraine a minor territorial dispute.

Ok, but in the grand scheme of things he has done, it's pretty minor right?

Given he was keeping actual nuclear secrets at his country club to do God only knows what with after getting his lawyers to flat-out lie and say they'd all been returned, I'd say it's up there with some of the more serious things he's done.

Secrets about the nuclear programs of foreign governments. And we don't know about how serious most of the classified material is, because... well, it's classified.
Which isn't to say that it's not worth looking into! But it's not especially unusual for classified documents to be mishandled. And when you're comparing it to the entire ouvre of a guy who literally tried to steal an election and lead a riot on the US Capitol... yeah, in the scheme of things it's pretty minor. And I say this as someone who used to work in archiving and recordkeeping.
But agree to disagree, whatever. I'm not really invested enough in ranking his many crimes to argue about it more.

They weren't mishandled though, they were stolen. Trump admitted as such with this whole "I declassified them with my mind" nonsense.
But yeah, it's not worth getting into the weeds with this. My point is that it goes far beyond a storage issue, and if it is what finally sees Trump behind bars, then I probably wouldn't complain too much.
I absolutely agree he is incredibly unlikely to see any jail time for this or anything else.

No chance Trump does jail. If Nixon didn't, Trump won't. I don't think America could stomach admitting fault.

Secrets about the nuclear programs of foreign governments. And we don't know about how serious most of the classified material is, because... well, it's classified. Except we do. It was widely reported that a significant amount of material the feds found was marked “oh fuck no” level of top secret, meaning it should only be viewed in a particular room and never leave the room. The stuff about the nuclear secrets of other countries is highly compromising to America because stuff like that points not just to what they know, but how they know it, as well as damaging their alliances etc because the fuckwits let President Hamburgular walk out with it. This is one of the counterpoints that came up with the classified stuff Biden and Pence had. The classification level of their documents has never come up, but I’m suggesting that, if those documents were serious that would have come out. They have a problem with the over-classification of papers, because it’s easier to just slap “classified” on everything rather than review every document. The handful of Biden and Pence documents were, in all likelihood, total who-cares stuff, like the White House toiletries requisition, that just slipped in.

It’s not really about Trump going to jail. It’s about stopping him becoming President again.

We know details, yeah. But there's more we don't know, and will probably never know. Again, it's not insignificant! But imo not the most important thing to indict him for. (I'll still take it though)
By the by, I genuinely think Trump has warped our perception of scandal. He's been such an outrageous piece of shit, so consistently, that even run-of-the-mill corruptions take on outsized importance. There's just so much bullshit that it's difficult to sort it into piles.

It’s not just Trump though. It’s the Republican party being utterly for sale. Putin’s mouthpiece today but who knows what they’ll do and who they’ll endorse tomorrow.

But Musk says if he gets arrested Trump will have a landslide win in 2024 and Elmo is never wrong, other than all those times.

Anyway, the problem with the hush money indictment is that, unless more damning details are revealed, it's pretty weaksauce. Much as agreeing with Republicans makes me want to take a cold shower to cleanse my soul, this does feel political. Political in the sense that this guy's office has limited resources, and they choose to focus on... a years-old payment to a porn star that was misclassified for some reason.
It feels desperate, like "fuck we have to get this guy for SOMETHING". And if it fails (which it probably will), it's going to be used as ammunition to argue that future indictments are similarly weaksauce, political and desperate. When in fact they are not!
