I think comparing 2016 Trump to 2024 Trump is misguided.
This time the team around him are far worse, as are his plans. He's also a bitter man looking for revenge (and a permanent get out of jail free card).
Most of us won't be directly affected by his policies - though things are going to get a lot worse for a lot of Americans. But the knock on effects of his (likely) actions on Ukraine will. Any hope of controlling climate change is looking far less likely. And it's only going to spur on more nasty right wing politics here (and in the rest of Europe) which are already worrying.
I don't think it's the end of the world. But the result leads to a more worrying future.

The world didn't end in 2016, it won't end in 2024. No one's saying it'll definitely end, but this kind of comment is especially unhelpful. There is an immediate difference in the world's current state in 2024 than in 2016. The most obvious example is that Russia's now-probably-inevitable victory in Ukraine is going to seriously destabilise eastern Europe and embolden Russia into making further land grabs. In Gaza, a full-on genocide will effectively meet zero resistance now.
He's surrounded himself with significantly more dangerous people this time as well, and there is a genuine desire among them to hurt people domestically and ensure the damage is permanent. They have the means to do so via the Supreme Court which already has a 6-3 majority and will likely become an 8-1 majority during Trumps next 4 years.

The full on genocide in Gaza hasn't been met with any real resistance anyway.
We will see what happens with their Ukraine support, he won't want to enbolden Putin as he would come out of it looking weak.

The full on genocide in Gaza hasn't been met with any real resistance anyway. Which I’m pretty sure will turn out to be a major reason for lower Dem turnout.

Stats are coming in saying Trump lost 4m voted compared to 2020 and Harris almost 15m compared to Biden. That's insane. She LOST lost.

If it is genuinely the Gaza thing, those people are in for a fucking shock and should probably stay away from the news for the next 5 years.

Fucking winds me up when people don't vote. The economy is pointed to as a concern for those who voted. I would imagine that would also include those who abstained because Gaza but I think that's a red herring tbh. The most logical reason is pretty much that they saw Harris as a continuation not a change.

I just can't see the Gaza abstentions having that much of an impact either tbh.

Well, at least that's something. And we can look forward to them inevitably falling out in some spectacular fashion.
Kid's texted to ask if this means she has to come home now (they're over there). I think "ask your mother" is the only appropriate answer.

The most logical reason is pretty much that they saw Harris as a continuation not a change. It just baffles me that continuing voting for your party and keeping Trump out of power isn't more pressing than not agreeing with some of Harris' policies and abstaining. Surely ANYTHING is better than Trump in power for previous democrat voters?

Hmmm. Trump to sort out the golf war*: www.bbc.co.uk/sport/golf/articles/cwyxq53jx5noWhat's this now Rory? "We'll see," said the 35-year-old world number three. "He might be able to. He's got Elon Musk, who I think is the smartest man in the world, beside him." * probaby will have a better outcome than Bush managed.

He really is eminently punchable. Because the first time he dropped that "Joke."; it went so well. If Trump does go hard on all he's been talking about, this whole MAGA movement Psyducks itself to death. Unfortunately quite a lot of people may die.

Didn't Trump attack electric cars and promised to scrap the Biden green energy plans? Musk is in for a shock if true...

Look at the state(s) of this chart I can't believe that the reason for that shift was due to a lack of primary or interview-dodging. Who's applying that sort of level-headed rationale and then going for Trump instead?
