In the 20+ years I've lived in the UK only 2 events have had a genuine and noticeable on my life the 2007 - 2008 financial crisis and covid. All the wars, Brexit, elections and atrocities of the last two decades have simply been shit I moaned about on EG or watched on TV. The average working professional in the UK is so insulated from these events it's absurd. Palestine, Ukraine, Myanmar, Sudan, Yemen, Haiti, Burkina Faso and all the other places enduring the most vicious unimaginable violence and trauma are all devastatingly awful but I'll be shopping at Sainsburys later, watching something via streaming, sport at the weekend. That's the callous reality of the modern world. Trumps presidency will be 4 years of headlines but will it really be anything to me beyond a few tweets or posts here? I doubt it, it will likely have the same impact as 2016. Nil. There's the potential for a lot of indirect effects though. If Trump messes up things like Tarriffs or Ukraine, and that has an impact on the UK economy, and then people blame the UK government for that (as they're wont to do) and then the Tories get back in in 4 years. Etc.. But yeah, I'm gonna take my own advice and go and play Tony Hawk instead of reading this thread. *Thinks happy thoughts*

I envy people whose jobs don’t involve shitloads of screens stock on the news, right now.

It sucks for a lot of people! I get it!
But we can't do anything about this. Worrying and stressing isn't going to help either. So go outside, hug your kids, and tell them to be good to people. Live your lives a day at a time, and do the best you can to help people and make your world a little bit better.
It's all any of us can do, and we can do that regardless of who is sitting in the Oval Office.

The best thing for those getting stressed about this is to not sit and read/watch the 24/7 rolling news coverage.
There’s nothing you can do, nothing to prepare for, most of it won’t have any impact on you.
Chillax people.

I'm considering just resetting my history on all the socials. There's too much left wing political stuff in my feeds and it will just depress me.

But I do hope he tries to deport illegal immigrants. Will quickly crash the economy forcing gop to remove him

I'm more annoyed at the polls we've been fed... "It's going to be so close, the closest, it's a really tight race, on a knife edge.... Oh wait, no it isn't."
Can we all just agree that polls don't work anymore?

I did a purge of news feeds and social media early this year after going through a bit of winter depression. Think It's time to do another one; stick to Swedish and local news for a while, and things that have nothing to do with politics. Apart from a few music and art communities FG is pretty much the only social media I use anymore, so that's already sorted.

I'll probably get a load of shit for this, but I also just want to say.... we did amazing as a nation in kicking the tories out in remarkable fashion just a few months back, and we have lots of reasons to be hopeful that this Labour gaovernment can put this country back on a decent path. It's going to be difficult with many bumps in the road, but they've / we've got 5 years to get it right. That's the next 5 years of your life (and your kids' life, if you've got em) under a Labour government with actual adults and genuinely good people in charge. And hopefully much more than 5 years.
Yes, the US has completely shat the bed, and it sucks purely from a global viewpoint if anything. But let's not lose sight of the fact that we've hopefully stopped our own ship from sinking, and all being well, heading towards a much brighter future..

jimnasticsYou won’t get ‘shit’ from me, but I think you need to think about how this makes Labour’s already difficult job much harder from an economics perspective. From a global conflict perspective, Trump has spoken about defunding or even dismantling NATO, which makes everything happening east of us that much more real. Europe needed strengthening as a bloc but we went the the other way and everybody else started to get infected by it too. Russia is definitely odds on to win Cold War 2 IMO. And all because of phones and fucking Facebook. With America, the danger is fundamental changes to the system to keep permanent power. The signs are all there!

Hard not to feel gloomy. This is the nail in the coffin of efforts to fight climate change. I really feel pessimistic about our chances of living out a peaceful old age.

I'm off to see Nish Kumar in Canterbury tonight. There's a strong chance the set is now in the bin and it's just going to be him rocking back and forth on the stage crying.

The problem with that in my place is that even fucking localest of local news bring every fart that Trump makes. I don't know why it should concern inhabitants of a town with barely 200k population far away from the US, but apparently, it brings them ad revenue, otherwise they wouldn't do it.

Hearing the same stuff in the office I heard after Brexit and Trump victories in 2016.
"This is what happens when you call everyone who disagrees with you a racist (or fascist or nazi)".
Feels like policies don't matter to a lot of people - they just want to be told they're great and shouldn't have to apologise or feel guilty for anything.

Although I'm not optimistic about the "long may it continue" bit, I'm still agree with the general sentiment that we are in a much better place than his time last year and, despite what the general population seems to think, Labour are and will do a good job. I just hope they can convince everyone of that sooner rather than later. I fully expect Badenoch is waking up this morning feeling optimistic about their chances in a few years' time.

The Grauniad have put out a brave, compelling statement that they’re going to stand up to Trump and hold him to account. Presumably, in the same fashion they’ve been doing, wall to wall coverage with an occasional “oooh isn’t he naughty” opinion piece.
