I think ultimately though it's time to stop trying to convince ourselves that people are inherently good. The evidence is very clear that most people are not. I don't know about that. Its where the 'but you're one of the good ones' comes from. Fear of the unknown, really, and its very easy to play on that if the person on the receiving end is an uncritical idiot.

Well at least these Jill Stein voters can sleep with their principles intact right? I mean it's silly to think they'd have all voted for Harris if they hadn't voted for her.

Is it time for the very blue states to secede? Semi-genuine question, I mean I'm sure they'd very soon be the dominant economic force in the world again.

Don't worry folks, there is election fraud in many states. The orange one saw it with his own eyes.
Rigged, it's all rigged I tell thee.

If you want to have a freak out about the end of the world Trump is pretty far down my list. AI, Microplastics, Biodiversity, Climate Change, Pandemics, Solar flares. A Trump presidency wouldn't make my top 20.
You could argue that 4 years of Trump might exasperate some of those but they are global issues that are bigger than any one country.

I hope Labour are taking a very hard, very long look at this. I would like this to be true. It's a salutary lesson for resting on your laurels. It's hard to know if we are just behind the US or ahead. I fear the answer will be a further shift to the right though.

I think the reason I find most convincing for the size of the victory isn’t that 60% of Americans wish they lived in Gilead but the economic one. The Dems were pointing to all manner of measures that showed the economy was doing well like profits and shareprices and GDP etc. Which were all true and correct, but Trump’s message on the economy was about retail prices and wages in your pocket. And I think we all know that everything is getting more expensive while wages haven’t kept up. So the question to voters in that sense was “are you better off than four years ago?” and the answer, inevitably, is no. Of course there are the racists and religious fundamentalists too but they would never have voted for Harris and wouldn’t win an election by themselves. The tariffs he wants to impose might cause a bit of discomfort.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how that Musk/Trump relationship develops. Obviously I know how it's going to end but it's going to be wild to see how quickly it turns to shit. I also guess that now the Dems won't have the weather machines and space lasers to destroy America, I imagine it'll just be god punishing America for gay people existing again?

I have kids and I seriously question the world they will inherit after this. We millennials in the west perhaps had the "easiest" world to be bought up in before that there was always shit going on, Cold war, Oil price crisis, Suez Crisis, world wars, Colonialism. Sounds bat shit crazy but maybe we had it too good for too long and forgot that this is an insane hateful world. /Remembers Gulf War, Kosovo war, 2nd Gulf War, constant conflict in Palestine, Afghanistan war, War on Terror, terrorist attacks non stop, Russia annexing anything it's can get its hands on. You're right we've had it TOO easy. Well let's see how you feel in 4 years, if you feel

I don't think it's fair or helpful to label people good and bad. People vote for the person/party that they feel will benefit them. The greater good of the world is secondary to what you feel will be best for you as an individual or a family. It's democracy.

'Good' as in 'would help you across the street or lend you a tenner'. I don't think people are inherently hateful.

I assume when things go more wrong it’ll be blaming Biden and immigrants for making such a mess that even Trump can’t magic it away.

Anyone else’s children this morning depressed? My daughter (16) especially was upset. She was pretty much how can a rapist, con man, convict get elected? What’s the point? Sad times seeing that in your kids.

Mine thinks all Catholics are in a plot to kill King Charles III thanks to a fundamental misunderstanding of what he learnt about the gunpowder plot this week at primary school

Exactly, according to Trump et al half those things probably don't exist so they're even more of a threat.

I think it could be argued that the situation in Ukraine (coming off the back of Covid) is responsible for a lot of the recent electoral shocks in different countries, particularly with the populists winning. Inflation going up dramatically in so many developed countries has caused incumbents to lose in quite a few places (arguably including the UK - though we'd already had our moment of Brexit madness, so it gave Labour a boost in our case). You can argue about different issues and measures and causes as much as you want, but when people in lots of countries see food prices rocketing faster than their pay packets, they blame whoever is in government.

In terms of end of the world, I'm not sure anything has changed.
Ukraine is going to lose the war. That's been apparent since the west has put a ceiling on the level of support their willing to offer which excludes things like long range ballistics which might actually swing it for them. The shape and extent of Russia's victory is up to Putin at this point.
The Palestinians are even more fucked regardless. At most a Harris victory would have meant slightly louder tutting at Israel behind closed doors. Israel have carte blanche to do what they want effectively, and the west seems ready to continue to support it.
Hell even if the US never had an election again, why are *you* worried about that? None of had a vote anyway. We're getting wound up about losing a right we never had.
It will be "interesting" to see how full throttle he goes this time with his policies with a pesky pandemic to distract him. Things like tariffs and deportations will hurt domestically, and disproportionately those that voted for him.

Well excuse me for not wanting one of the predominant global powers, whose power is such that influences other countries economics and culture, to not be steered by right wing lunatics.
