Sick to my stomach that it's being celebrated even here by some people... Liberty dying with thunderous applause, indeed... "Inherent goodness", my nuts! This is the kind of world I'm expected to live in? To (maybe) bring a kid into, even?!? Fuck's sake! /vent I mean, lets keep things in perspective. The world is going to keep turning and in a few years people will get another chance to vote for 'change', high five each other for a bit and do fuck all about it, so I wouldn't let it wind you up. I know you're trying not to doom and gloom about it, but internally they're probably fucked for decades though as they'll pretty much have a unanimously neo nazis adjacent supreme Court. They're going to use that to rip away most rights for their own citizens and prevent them from coming back most likely. If they're being serious about other stuff as well (and you've no reason to believe they aren't), half their opposition who might take them on next time could be in jail by then. Plus there's the damage they'll do internationally - a strong US is seemingly an unfortunate counterbalance to Russia and China, so having a stooge and suckups like Musk at the helm is basically giving them free reign.

I applaud your optimism but I think this will be the last election in the US. Come on man, be serious.

Like I said earlier, let's hope they actually do get a chance to vote (and properly, not like the Russians get to "vote"), first... They do have the Constitution. And well you know how nuts they are about that.

Any person that didn't vote or non white person that voted for trump, you got what you fucking well deserve. Like that cunt on BBC news saying "obama didn't do enough or my taxes are high under biden" eat shit
Ukraine is really fucked now as I bet you any money trump will stop any weapons or help to them and he will give any support to the IDF.
You may think in 4 years they can vote for someone else but I don't think MAGA lot want free and honest elections as you saw with trump eyeing dictators and maga lot firebombing ballots

I think it's down to 3 things. Agree that misogyny and racism played a part. Probably more misogyny. And I think most Americans just live in their own little bubble, whether that's county or state or whatever, so when the economy struggled, they were unaware of the causes and just laid the blame at Biden's door. So utterly depressing. I didn’t see anything from the Dems more than vote for us instead of him. His policies are awful but he said what they wanted to hear. Saying vote for us and not the criminal isn’t going to persuade many that voted for him before (and doesn’t like women/non white people). Uninspiring but decent people is the best I could say about the dems. That obviously wasn’t enough.

That's two Trump presidencies, Brexit and four Conservative governments elected since I've been able to vote. Starting to think my values are in the minority. A person is alright, people are told what to think by self enriching billionaires. This election was just fought on immigration and transphobia, two things which don’t affect most voters. And nothing is going to change until we stop allowing them to do it. People don't like change, the demography of Western countries is changing far more rapidly than 20 years ago. The polarisation of politics now seems to mean one party will be anti immigration and one pro immigration. You can see it in the European elections, it's a global voter base that want a strong stance on immigration. It's not the outcome I would choose and I'm especially concerned about the Ukraine but the world didn't end 2016 - 2020 and at least klan boys won't be shooting up Washington. Interested to see how UK and US relations move forward from here.

I have kids and I seriously question the world they will inherit after this. We millennials in the west perhaps had the "easiest" world to be bought up in before that there was always shit going on, Cold war, Oil price crisis, Suez Crisis, world wars, Colonialism. Sounds bat shit crazy but maybe we had it too good for too long and forgot that this is an insane hateful world. /Remembers Gulf War, Kosovo war, 2nd Gulf War, constant conflict in Palestine, Afghanistan war, War on Terror, terrorist attacks non stop, Russia annexing anything it's can get its hands on. You're right we've had it TOO easy.

The world isn't going to end but it will be a lot shitter for a lot of people, and it's unlikely things will spring back to where they are now.

I know you're trying not to doom and gloom about it, but internally they're probably fucked for decades though Are they, though? They want this or have at the very least allowed it. They obviously don't think they are fucked. All we can do is use it as a cautionary tale and get our shit together and, like a *lot* of European politicians said, minimise their impact on us.

They're fucked in the sense that even if some of them realise it was a bad idea after all the supreme Court will effectively prevent them from doing anything about it until they die off or they get rid of it.

Like I just saw some dude wetting themselves on twitter 'Im so deeply sorry to our sisters, we have failed you'. Well, no, you haven't. Women make up 50% of the population, they are capable of 'saving' themselves. On the whole, they obviously like what he is selling and to deny that robs them of agency. I swear to god, everywhere I look its Russ From Cheshire types crywanking. I probably need less internet today. I am so intrigued to see the voter data by race and gender.

Look at least there's some good news With all the tariff nonsense Trump says he'll bring in there'll be plenty of them available as they'll be too expensive for Americans to buy!

I too have kids and don't worry about anything for them, they're grown adults, two of which earn more than I do and the third is doing her bit to fight the population collapse we're facing. So I reckon they can look after themsleves.

People don't like change, the demography of Western countries is changing far more rapidly than 20 years ago. And this is tangentially my point. The blame for that is being driven at immigrants by the wealthy class when one of the key drivers is the fact native people can't afford to have kids or buy a house to start a family. Why do we rely so heavily on immigration to prop up our economy? Because we need to import warm bodies thanks to life becoming unaffordable. Is anything material being done about that? No. Who do we blame that on? Not the people in charge, not the people making me redundant to protect their bonus, so its got to be the immigrants. If you do fuck all to materially affect the root cause of peoples problems, someone will come along and give you a target to aim at and that's just happened in America and happened here for 14 years.

I agree there's not much people can do about it but telling people to "just accept it" is just off the mark. There's genuine reason to believe that large chunks of people are in serious and immediate danger from this simply for being who they are. And there's countless very obvious ways it'll affect us overseas, from an unchecked Russia, the probable end of Ukraine through to us getting the shitty end of tariffs with nothing that can be done about it.
I think ultimately though it's time to stop trying to convince ourselves that people are inherently good. The evidence is very clear that most people are not.

I am so intrigued to see the voter data by race and gender. The tendency to homogenise people is such a failing of the left. 'how can a black/asian/latino/woman vote for trump?'. Because a lot of them are very religious and sometimes hateful religiosity outweighs casual racism. Its not just white people who are 'conservative'.

I think the reason I find most convincing for the size of the victory isn’t that 60% of Americans wish they lived in Gilead but the economic one.
The Dems were pointing to all manner of measures that showed the economy was doing well like profits and shareprices and GDP etc. Which were all true and correct, but Trump’s message on the economy was about retail prices and wages in your pocket. And I think we all know that everything is getting more expensive while wages haven’t kept up. So the question to voters in that sense was “are you better off than four years ago?” and the answer, inevitably, is no.
Of course there are the racists and religious fundamentalists too but they would never have voted for Harris and wouldn’t win an election by themselves.
