Palpatine and the empire have distanced themself from the Republicans. In a statement, "we are happy to blow up planets but we are not as evil as the republican party"

Given his supporters wanted to lynch his last one when he wouldn't participate in a insurrection it'd take a special sort of person to want to be Trump's VP.

The sort of "special person" who'd attend the State of the Union while decked out in full MAGA gear, looking like Uncle Sam's inbred half-cousin, before interrupting the president's speech with some methed-up heckling, perhaps?

Given the state of The Constitution and its massive loopholes, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the vain orange git name himself as VP

It's kinda unbelievable how much the GOP has let itself be taken over by him. They didn't need to, and they had a chance to get rid of him. They're going to be dealing with the legacy of that, and all his supporters, for years to come - even if he doesn't win or they manage to get rid of him.

What happens when Orange dictator grandpa dies?

Well, he's a cockroach, so he'll probably manage to survive long enough to fuck the system enough that they'll just keep installing someone more competent that wants the same dictatorial things as him (which unfortunately isn't as difficult as it should be in a democracy)

It's exactly the same dilemma the tories had with farage and brexit, only they seem to have even more brainwashed nutcases due to how unregulated the news channels are over there. They know that trump will set up an independent party and will completely hand it to the dems by splitting the right wing vote. So like the tories they just embrace it all, because otherwise it's annihilation.

I wonder if they'd have been better off letting him run as an independent and split the vote, and taking a one-time loss. Independents never win and he'd probably have faded off into obscurity by now, and the entire party wouldn't have been taken over by cultist morons.

I feel like the cultist morons were there before Trump, they were just less obvious about it... The likes of McConnell, Ghouliani, Ted Cruz etc were there before, for instance, and Faux News and other organisations and people were already slowly cultivating the current crop of voters
Trump did bring his fair share of morons into the party of course, and his cult of personality and sheer brazen disregard for all things presidential (and for basic human decency) that enabled the MAGAts to shout all the quiet parts out loud cannot be underestimated... But unless he was just so unfathomably compromised and filthy that he singlehandedly turned everyone already in there into what they are now (or enabled external factors such as Putin to do so), I think he mostly accelerated the slow burn into a wildfire much sooner than it would have erupted, if it had been left to simmer and build up the way it was before him

True, and also true about it being pretty similar to farage/brexit/johnson and all the new tory morons they brought in.
The difference is the cult-of-personality thing. It feels like if Trump wins there's actually a reasonable chance of him changing the US into some Russia style autocracy. Which is something that would have seemed entirely in the realms of fiction a decade ago.

If you said about 15 to 20 years ago, some stupid and talentless conman reality "star" would be president then trying to overthrow the new POTUS and not put in jail, add in a ton of shit that trump has done like wanting to nuke tornados, you would of been seen as loony on lots of drugs
but here we are in the idiocracy world
But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.

www.newsweek.com/republicans-against-donald-trump-ken-buck-1878848Five more Republican members of the HoR could follow Ken Buck, making them the first US majority in history to resign themselves into a minority and lose control of the house. I’m honestly baffled as to why Republicans are so paralysed and unable to stop Trump’s takeover even now. I could see it when they wanted to win, but he is draining their coffers to fund his legal bills and fucking with the message (what message…) by flip flopping on stuff like his position on Tik Tok, leaving them scrambling to sound coherent. Not that he sounds coherent, mind, his worsening garbled speech shows he is at best entirely distracted and at worst demented. Plus he is clearly compromised by Russia, but then that’s a much wider problem in the party than just him, I’m sure, so maybe that’s it. But the bottom line remains the same: take the L or lose your Grand Old Party, guys.

I feel like they're going to be fucked either way once Trump is out of the picture. Trump's positions on issues mostly aren't conservative and barely even make sense at all, and once he's gone the coalition will collapse under the weight of all the infighting.
(possibly wishful thinking)

The cynical playing up to the insane wing of the party has effectively fucked them over entirely, they are the Trump party nothing else. It's still insane how many women within the party are entirely fine with a confirmed rapist and go to fucking bat for him.

Trump was going to be the mouthpiece, the controllable useful idiot for them to pass whatever they wanted, drum up support from the crazies, silence everyone else and solidify their reign.
They'll still try to make it happen, make no mistake, but unfortunately, he turned out to be less useful, more idiot and entirely uncontrollable, and even more unfortunately (for them) their voter base is now enamoured with him (after 8 years I still cannot fully fathom why), so it's tie yourself to the (hopefully) sinking ship's anchor or lose support... or jump ship, as some are doing now.
And with the RNC staff already having gone through a purge of dissidents, who (within the party) can stop him? Are they going to do an 180° on all the support they've given him these years? Are they fuck!
Tl;dr the leopards are beginning to eat their faces now too, and it's delicious, keep it going

They're like James Bond villains, who think it's a great idea to keep a man-eating shark close at hand and then act surprised when it eats them.
