That was great read... They had to deliberately not mention either witcher 3 or cyberpunk 2077. Tw3 was second largest release in 2015 and cp77 was number 1 in 2020? They mentioned epic games so I guess it cannot be because they are from their competitor.

Fanatical have a couple of $1 bundles that aren't bad. www.fanatical.com/en/collections/dollar-collections$1 for Rebel Galaxy + Rebel Galaxy Outlaw. (if you didn't get the first when it was given away free. The second is a decent if shallow Privateer style space combat sim. ) $1 for Unity of Command Trilogy even though the main game was given away free on Epic a few weeks ago.

i quite liked the first rebel galaxy as well; 3D but all flying takes place on a 2D plane, same final-frontier-as-wild-west-frontier cowboy-esque vibe, same nearly but not quite gameplay that gets old toward the end but fun to be had until then

Bought shogun: total war.
Not total war: shogun.
Aka. I got number uno!
Cost was less than a cup of coffee but wanna trigger some nostalgic memories playing pirated version in last year of twentieth century...played a decent amount on it back then.
Still fondly remember the defence of bridge by putting archers on each side and nodachi samurai as a wall resulting in massive amount of corpses in one place.
Ah. Good times.

Or those battlefields that had a vertical cliff that you could place yourself on the top of. So 5000 enemy soldiers would hike up each side in single file only to find your best defensive troops at the top, a continuous rain of unholy death from archers all the way, and a couple of mounted troops on hold to mop up the routed troops. Wonderful moments (albeit shite AI). Played the Medieval: Total War follow-up recently too. With the Viking Invasion exapansion it's really nice. Although the XL mod (all countries playable in the main game) leads to a lot of auto-completed battles.

Still fondly remember the defence of bridge by putting archers on each side and nodachi samurai as a wall resulting in massive amount of corpses in one place. Ah. Good times. I tried the demo back when Medieval had just come out. Just to determine if I would like the follow-up. And I did.
I don't remember too many battles as most of them were pretty formulaic. Occasionally there was a bridge, somtimes a steep slope and I remember having a hard time with the Golden Horde on the highest difficulty.
But when I first started playing the Byzantine Empire I had a very memorable series of battles happen in Rum that eventually resulted in me losing the army and the province. At first it was just me being unfamiliar with the hodge-podge troops I had available and losing more troops than I should have. But after defeating the Turks I was immediately faced with a massive egyptian invasion force, while my army was badly damaged. And it was still the early game with little valor on the troops and an inexperienced general. So even my Trebizond Archers and Bulgarian Brigands were eventually reduced to charging down the hill my army was defending. And that actually worked pretty well considering that the Egyptians were mostly relying on just Peasants, Urban Militia, Camels and other low quality troops. But against the numbers (3000 or so) my random collection of at most 500 soldiers eventually took too many losses and were forced to retreat to the wooden fort where the 120 survivors took their last stand. My three or four surviving Varangians held the gate against a few hundred peasants until the peasants broke and ran, leaving behind a lot of bodies. The whole battle was a lost cause from the beginning, but it was still slightly surreal seeing three or four little axe-wielding cardboard cut-outs charging out the gate behind a mass of panicking peasants.

I have fond memories of the chaotic battles with massive mini-sprite armies in Shogun 1.
It always seemed to have quite a lot of RNG hidden in there, but it was satisfying when your plan actually worked.
I never knew if I was playing the strategic layer properly or not though.
I tried a couple of times to get into later games in the series, but the added complexity always kinda got in the way.

Wh40k Space Wolf is getting de-listed from Steam, so if you want it you can grab it + 6 dlc for the massive price of $1 if you grab the lowest tier here: www.humblebundle.com/games/herocraft-complete-collectionI hear it's 'ok'. Turn based tactics + card game. A bit grindy apparently because it was a mobile game originally. Sounds like King's Bounty to me, with the addition of cards and the subtraction of battling inside your own belt.

Shogun had a nice clear Rock-Paper-Scissors setup where Cavalry beat archers, archers beat footsoldiers, and footsoldiers beat cavalry. But then you had elevation and flanking and hidden troops to mix things up. But I don't think there were all that many unit types.
I keep nearly buying Medieval 2, partly for the mods, but then I wonder if it's gonna be a lot more stuff.

Medieval Gold Edition does have a bunch of smaller stand alone campaigns like the Aztecs to play. Admittedly, depsite owning most Total Wars the only one I put serious time into was also Shogun 1. For Medieval 1, the Viking expansion is also smaller scale.

There was always a good shit-your-pants moment whenever the Vikings show up early and you still only have a few Irish Kerns on a hill protecting your King/general against a bunch of Huscarles.

I can't imagine going back to the annoying simplicity of Shogun or Medieval. The expansions notched it up but man they were easy to game.

But are the modern ones more difficult (i.e. better AI, better balance etc.) or just harder to learn (because of said added complexity).
My impression was that the AI never got much better (or sometimes worse) and the simulation kind of went out the window eventually. I'd assume that it's still just a matter of getting stronger and then eventually just steamrolling everyone (?)
A lot of the depth in Medieval was also just hidden. When it comes to the tactical layer at least.

When it comes to the tactical layer at least. Bit of both, the AI isn't that much better exactly but it's far less stupid. There are more systems now but they're not actually that complex, it's not like a Paradox game (Victoria 3). It's partly the tile based map of the old games but there was an extremely simple mechanism to beat it. The AI, even if it outnumbered you, would spread it's armies across your border. Call the provinces 1....N. All you really had to do was put your best/biggest army on 1. Invade it, win that battle and your armies now occupy 1. You can then use a smaller army to invade 2, but the armies from 1 can reinforce it, which are your best armies. So you win 2. Then invade 3 and you can again use the armies you just occupied with to knock over 3. Etc. You could basically take the entire border of an enemy in 1 turn, then the next layer in on turn 2. It was like a zipper going up and down. Once you learnt the trick the game had absolutely nothing to throw at you. That and you could make your general run around in-front of a wood and the entire enemy army would charge them while your army hid in said wood. So the AI has improved, but it's just not quite as stupid as it once was. But yknow I think it'd all be much better if it had supply lines and you actually had to think about invading Russia due to the winter. Some Total War games do that a bit, most don't.

After finishing Empire, the enemy is a moron as well. It has a habit of declaring war on you and not doing anything. and during battle it will try to charge your artillery which is fine but often it would charge from the side, get to your musket infantry, and then go at your artillery. so basically opens themselves to constant barrage from musket fire. but it does try flanking, sometimes successfully as few times i didnt care about my flanks only for ai to go around them, kill my cavalry and then attack my infantry from the back.
so better than shogun 1. thats the latest one i played so dont know about the newer games.

It was like a zipper going up and down. Wouldn't that just lose you most of the provinces again pretty quickly? Due to rebellion I mean. If you can do it that fast then you won't have many troops and in some cases either sieges or possibly messy siege battles would be required.
I wouldn't know as I always played slow and methodical.
Personally I had more of a problem with how the AI was essentially not capable of building an effective army. After a while with decent generals and a well balanced army of good quality troops and perhaps some added valor, it became pretty much impossible to lose any battles.

Some good Warner Bros sales. I guess they've been on a multiple times, but having got back into Steam again recently, I've picked up Batman Arkham Knight and Mad Max.

90% off is what Warner Bros will eventually sell its games division for, unless they start getting a grip.
