So many things in the world come from necessity, that doesn't make them unworthy

Well, I've never tried that, but cheddar on Xmas cake is a delicacy, so it sounds feasible. Isn't Mrs Hermit from Yorkshire where cheese with fruit cake is a thing and that is basically just an extension of that, and a very tasty extension at that. Yep she is and fruit cake is horrible.

I've just enjoyed a rather large slab of fruitcake with a side order of Wensleydale.
Might have to cut another. Lovely.

I thought this thing about not liking fruit cake was an American thing. Rather shocked to see it has infected the UK too! I guess it's just one of those things I'll never be able to comprehend.. it's like when I meet someone who says they don't like chocolate. Since we seem to have a few Americans, I have a question that's always confused me. What do they eat for the main meal on Xmas day in the US? I only ask because in the UK we eat Turkey, but the US has Thanksgiving just before, which is when they eat Turkey. So do they just have it twice, or do they eat something else? (Though of course, Xmas Turkey was imported from the New World by Henry 8th, so I guess you could say it's an american thing originally)

"After the war you'd be much better of if you could grow fruit and veg in the back garden. Make sheep's head soup and use liquid paraffin as an alternative to butter for baking cakes using powdered egg from a can" Sounds delicious!

You've been defending mince pies, you have no standing

I rather think mince pies do a smashing job of defending themselves by being utterly delicious

I bought mince pies today. I shall have 2 with a coffee for breakfast. It will be glorious.
To bring some balance, iced topped mince pies are shit.

Puff pastry mince pies make a nice change. I probably prefer traditional short crust but pretty good. Heston wotsit sold some in Waitrose a few years ago.

I don't mind mince pies, never iced though.
If we're talking about disappointing festive food, trifle is shit.

It's definitely a case of diminishing returns after the first 2 mince pies of the year!
Do we wack them in the microwave, Partridge style, to mix things up a bit!?

I've seen a recipe where you bash them up and make ice cream with them. Mine just go in the bin where they should have been in the first place

Yeah, warmed Mince Pies mashed slightly with a ton of ice ream are great. I've only eaten about 5 today and two of those were mini so they don't count. Only 7 more mini ones to go and i can start on the Heston ones from 'trose.

I see visions of starving children in Africa eating mince pies with big smiles on their faces. Then it fades away like a bin van round a corner
They don't even know it's Christmas time. At all
