Character select screen, isn't it?
Very nice btw... Mine looks like a hobo in comparison.

Heads up: Beyond Light is leaving Game Pass in 2.5 weeks, but currently on sale. How is this going to effect my son who is playing exclusively on Game Pass? i'm a paid up Destiny 2 user and he's been playing with my this year sine it hit GP. What will he still have access to? This new way of free to play but not can be quite confusing.

He'll have access to the free stuff only (which includes Forsaken from the 7th Dec IIRC) The main issue for me is that you lose access to stasis subclasses without beyond light.
I still need to figure out how I'm going to handle this... It was so nice just being able to move between Steam and Xbox with all content on both.

Thanks.
I'm trying to think... This should work the same as any other game on the Xbox, right? As in, if I've bought it once and I have it installed on both the xboxes in the house then he'll have access to it. I'm not sure we've tried playing a single purchased game at the same time that isn't on game pass, that's my only concern.

If you're game sharing your licensed installed copy with his Xbox user log-in then that will work. You can also install your licensed copy on multiple consoles. After it leaves GP what you can't do is both play Destiny (with all the DLCs you've got) at the same time, you'd need to buy him a copy of the game. Or you can play together, with one of you on the F2P version only.

Forsaken isn't actually going free, only the campaign is. The content itself is still locked behind purchase of the DLC. The most important consequence is that, unless you own any of the expansions (doesn't have to be Forsaken, any will do, but you have to have bought at least one), then you lose access to the middle tree of each class.

This is giving me a headache! They should just make the previous expansion free when a new one comes out.

I got the impression that Destiny on Game Pass was supposed to be the start of a tight-knit relationship between the two. There were even rumours of Bungie being bought out over the last year. Wonder what happened for it to be scrapped already.

Yeah, something clearly fell apart there. No halo related stuff in the anniversary content too, which was heavily rumoured.
Maybe the Netease stuff complicated things...

I just seems like a bad move even if the motive is revenue for Bungie.
Xbox GP has gained them a lot of new players and lapsed ones coming back. Surely the right move is to try to keep them playing and buying Anniversary pack and/or Witch Queen, not deter them with the cost of having to buy past expansions they've already played through and then Witch Queen on top of that.
And the game's in a content hiatus (other than the Anniversary thing) from now to Feb, why not keep the population up in the meantime?
As already mentioned, they should move to having all the past expansions free and automatically available when you buy the latest one, it just makes way more sense.

Sometimes I wonder if Destiny 2 would be better off going the FF14 way. How many of the current userbase would pay a monthly subscription instead of a season pass?

Knowing how they operate, they would almost certainly price themselves out of making a subscription model work. Would end up £14.99pm or something ridiculous.
They just need to make everything other than the latest expansion free for everyone and stop making such a pig's ear out of access. They clearly plan to vault older stuff annually whether you've paid for it or not so you might as well let the playerbase have the access to catch up.

It's my main game (for much of the year it's the only thing i play) and i'd be happy to change to a monthly sub model + annual DLCs if it meant better/more seasonal content. But I suspect it would drive many away. Particularly the chunk of the playerbase who are only or mainly there for PvP.

I wonder if there's really anyone who is only there for the PVP. They haven't released a new map in years.

Despite that, PvP mains aren't unusual, there's several in my clan and more on the discords i use. Pretty much they only play the minimum PvE they need to for gear. I think it's a much a social thing for them as it is for anything else.

That surprises me. I thought the PvP population was fairly low (outside maybe of Trials which has good rewards for PvE too). After all, if it were such an important part of the userbase, you'd think it would be more supported.

I'm a super casual gamepass xboxer, played a lot during battlegrounds, drifted off during splicer, not played this season at all. Saw it was coming off gamepass and pretty much decided I'm done with game. Unless they come out with a Witch Queen edition that has the new expansion + all the old ones, in a similar way to how almost every other game with multiple expansions does, but I think that's not going to happen, because reasons.

It occurs to me that I got the season pass for this and lose access to most of the game next week on Xbox. I do have everything bar Beyond Light on PS4 but not sure if it transfers and unsure if I want to wade through 30fps treacle now.

Your Season Pass will stay on both but none of the rest will be there on Xbox. tbh if you plan to play at all in the next couple of months and don't plan to get a PS5 you're better off switching to Xbox and buying the 3 X DlC pack (£27.99 on sale for rest of this week) and looking at it as your next gen upgrade cost. I fired up my old PS4 Pro install after some time on the PS5 version and going back felt unbearable.

I don’t have a good history with Destiny 2 but did think about buying one of the versions in the recent sale for new PS5 shooty bangs. Articles I looked up for guidance on which to get just made it sound like a shitshow. I think one of the headlines might literally have been “Destiny 2’s expansions officially a confusing shitshow”

It's relatively straightforward at a base level: paid expansions do not transfer between platforms, seasonal content does. It's muddied up a bit by forsaken leaving soon though.

Aubo, maybe you should look into actual PS5 games and not just PS4 upgrades to justify your new purchase.
Just a thought.

It's a pretty good PS5 demo in fairness. Silky smooth compared to the 30fps of yore. Might as well just jump in to the F2P version and see if you fancy playing more first, though.
Really annoying that they didn't go for cross buy between Xbox and Windows store on this. It would've been a no-brainer then, but now I'm wondering if I should just stick to Steam for the anniversary/witch queen stuff or risk jumping to Windows store in the hopes that it'll become cross buy in the future.
I might actually give it a break too. It's been nice not having a live service game on the go recently. It's been great ploughing through games with an actual ending...

Mainly because my memory of the base game is that it’s pretty poor, but some of the expansions have a good reputation. Eg, I think Forsaken was meant to be really good, but apparently if one bought it now, the content would be canceled shorty anyway, which seems weird.
And you can bet I’ll be all over Horizon 2 when it is out, but actual PS5 games are thin on the ground, and I just spent $750, so heavily discounted games with a free PS5 upgrade are looking good.

A lot of what made Forsaken good will remain at least, because it's where a lot of stuff was overhauled at a system level such as returning random weapon rolls, armor 2.0 and so on. So in that respect, it's sticking around.
Also worth noting that Last Wish and Shattered Throne (and the Dreaming City) are all staying and for the former 2 you'll be able to just buy the Forsaken pack when it launches to get access to them and all the Exotics too. It's a semi neat way to do it tbh, they're basically just keeping the bits that people care about still and ditching the rest.
Shadowkeep is kind of crap, were it not for the dungeon and raid I'd probably suggest just skipping it entirely because all the extra stuff on the moon is barely worth doing. Beyond Light is pretty good though, except for the fact it launched alongside sunsetting.

I’m more of a play a story campaign type and check out some multiplayer. I’ve never done a Raid because you have to find a group on a third party website and cbf.
