My kids are enjoying watching me play BotW. Me, less so: the junior designer that added the “can’t climb in the rain” feature was a penis and should be fired especially when *it fucking rains all the fucking time*. Dogshit game design. I quite liked it, it forced you to experiment and explore other ways to traverse the landscape. It was another subtle way to nudge you into being creative to discover different routes or techniques and everything you find along the way. That's the underlying genius of BOTW (not the rain specifically) and the reason why I think it's the only true "Open World" game. It does away with endless icons, waypoints to chase, invisible walls etc. But it doesn't leave the less creative of us out there hanging, overwhelmed by choice. It replaces those often helpful but intrusive things with subtle systems and prods that tap into the part of you that used to wander off in any direction as a kid just to see what you might find or wind up doing and the clever part is you rarely notice you are being nudged. It's harsh to suggest it's "shit game design" because you aren't into it. That's a bit like saying "I don't personally like apples therefore apples are objectively shit. For the record I found the rain irritating a fair bit too mind you after a while when I'd seen a good chunk of the map. 😃

Still can't believe I beat that last boss, initially thought it was beyond me, took about 5 days though. So did I! Weirdly though, once I worked it out I beat it without barely taking a hit. It's exceptionally well designed and incredibly fair. It just needs to be learned. I found this to be the case with most bosses. I would die to them half a dozen times, feel they were completely impossible and unfair, before everything just clicked and I would take them down with barely a scratch. I didn't absolutely love Dread, but it is fantastically designed game.

Halved stamina usage on climb jumps will rarely matter and it would be a very nice bonus for those that seek it out. Otherwise I didn't mind it either, there's ways to circumvent it, it's immersive, it's used in gameplay (Zora's Domain) and worse comes to worst you can usually wait it out. Then again I also didn't mind the weapon durability, so what do I know

What’s the creative solution to “I need to climb this mountain to get to the top and it’s raining”? Other than wait or go and do something else.
BotW is a great game but it drops the ball more frequently than I’d expect.

jeepers I'm afraid it's "do something else or wait for the rain to stop". To be honest, although it sometimes annoyed me I'm also easily distracted and there's always something else in the vicinity to do. Surely it's not raining all the time?

What’s the creative solution to “I need to climb this mountain to get to the top and it’s raining”? Other than wait or go and do something else. Well, there's the whistle sprint trick that can get you up most slopes. Either hold D-pad down and mash B or the opposite, I forget. Even if you start climbing you immediately let go so you don't slip, and I'm fairly certain just about any slope has at least some spots that allow you to get up, or a different less steep angle. And the climbing gear does help even without a dedicated passive, you cover more distance going up than what you drop. And Revali's Gale once you get it, obviously. Or gliding there from a higher vantage point if applicable (especially with windbombs if you don't mind a little physics exploit), and if a mountain is too high to do that it usually has paths you can navigate with the other things I mentioned. It is annoying, don't get me wrong. I just didn't find it nearly as much of a dealbreaker as others did.

Iirc, there's some places in the game where the rain actually doesn't stop until you do a thing.

Iirc, there's some places in the game where the rain actually doesn't stop until you do a thing. Zora's Domain is the big one, because Vah Ruta is going berserk the rain won't stop until you clear that portion of the story. It helps funnel you on the path that lets you meet Sidon, but it's not impossible to circumvent it. There's even a special cutscene if you reach the Zora throne room without ever having met Sidon. There may be a couple shrine trials that have that as well, either to make things more difficult or because it's necessary for the trial. I remember one in particular where it's always a thunderstorm.

Recently did the Yiga Hideout section that was a right pain in the arse. A stealth section that doesn't let you save in the middle of it. The boss at the end was fun though.
Now in the nearby divine beast. Think I've basically reached the end of it, but I was finding it really hard to get my head around working through it. I felt like I was just stumbling along and eventually doing what needed to be done.
Most of the game is really great, but I do think these more structured areas don't work quite as well. Really hope they go back to the design philosophy of the traditional dungeons in the new game. Would be good to see a few more tools as well.

Clearly very much in the minority but I didn’t like BoTW. Gave it around 15 hours and was just not enjoying it at all, nothing clicked, so abandoned it.

When Metroid Prime first came out on GC I uad played through to the final boss before my appendix exploded, leaving me seriously ill and in no mood for games for a while. When I finally went hack to it to have that final section then the boss to re-acclimatise to the controls was a bit of a nightmare, I did manage it in the end though, dread to think how many attempts it took...

Sure you can make a campfire and and advance time to end the rain in BotW. Not in the constant rain areas, obv.

Has anyone played Resident Evil 4 (the remastered original, not the upcoming remake) on Switch? If so, how does it play?
I think it's got the same somewhat updated textures as the PC/PS3(4?) remaster, but I heard it doesn't have the motion controls of the Wiimake, or the mouse controls of the PC version.
I also heard that for some reason the Switch analogue controls are really slow, but I don't know if that ever got changed/improved.

I'm hard wired that way and I'd end up boring myself!

The lack of motion controls is a big miss though. Don't pay full price, it's on sale every other day 😃

I can't really comment on the comparisons between other versions of Resi 4, as I only played the PC one many, many years ago. I can say that it plays really well on the Switch and have no complaints about it at all. It was a great game before and is still a great game there.

It seems to be only one review that mentions the aiming with the analogue sticks being really slow, so I wonder if that was a bug or got fixed.

Maybe, but I would say that the game is perhaps less fluid in its movement and aiming than modern games. It could be the reviewer just hadn't played the original or didn't remember that it had a slightly clunky feel to it. I would say that is a design choice to not have you popping headshots constantly and to add a bit more tension to it all though.

Yeah I'm feeling the draw of Octopath 2. I think once I'm done with Metroid Prime, I may trade it in for a bit of a discount.

And since I brought it up, on the one hand I want more games to have title screens like Octopath's, but on the other hand such title screens being rare makes them more special... Also my starting character more or less told an idiot to go jack off in the first half hour and I like her already For more reasons than that, of course, but still

I started with the merchant in the demo. It's pretty funny how he starts off so close geographically to the samurai bloke, but there's no mention whatsoever of the massive war happening a couple minutes walk away.

Has anyone ever had an issue with their Switch not accepting card payments? Specifically, I can no longer use the same card I've always used. Its yet to expire. I can buy things on other apps and sites.
I'm getting the same iasue on the Nintendo website.

To "fix" I just added the card as my default PayPal payment method and use Paypal with the eShop. Had similar happen on Xbox and PSN over the years with prepaid debit cards so if you are using one of those then it may be a factor.

Its not a pre-paid one. Just a regular old debit card. I might have to pay via PayPal, like you say. Its just a bit frustrating is all.

Yeah, I've had issues with saved cards in the past. Switched everything over to PayPal a few years ago and no problems since then.

Bizarrely, this card issue has also affected my partner, who using a credit card and is with an entirely different bank. I wonder if this is a Nintendo thing?
