Is the Expansion pass for Pokemon Sword/Shield worth it? Seems like about half a full game for about half the price of a full game? In terms of content and added features I'd say it's worth it, especially if you can find a deal on CD Keys or something, but it honestly depends on whether you liked the base game or not. It's more or less (plenty) more of the same, so if you were ambivalent about the base game I don't really think it'll change your opinion too much.

But a few days ago he discovered the existence of the expansion pack and has now shifted to pestering me for that.

It's more or less (plenty) more of the same, so if you were ambivalent about the base game I don't really think it'll change your opinion too much. It's for my son rather than me. He finished Shield a few weeks back and has been hoovering up remaining pokemon whilst pestering me for Violet. But a few days ago he discovered the existence of the expansion pack and has now shifted to pestering me for that. The expansion pack is definitely the safer (and cheaper, but it's not a full game so that's to be expected) option. Scarlet and Violet, as far as I've played, have their problems. They're hardly bad games and he's probably not going to be bothered too much by all the technical niggles that would annoy me or you (that is, unless Violet really is that much more unstable than Scarlet and things start crashing on him, but I can't confirm that) but they could have done a few things better. I'll put the rest in spoiler tags because it's running a little long (actual spoilers will be double-tagged) but the tl;dr is that there's an easily avoidable issue in how the game handles progression that, even in the context of an open-world game, would have made the game better if it was handled differently. I can't rag on them too much for not providing at least some idea of how tough each main challenge is in terms of levels (some vague hints in a couple of their descriptions aside, which you might never even notice), as it is an open-world and if you get stuck on something you can go somewhere else, but they did miss an easy, justifiable and immersive trick: make each boss scale based on how many of that type you've defeated before it. It can be justified for all three main paths' challenges (1. It's hinted at in the anime, Gym Leaders could choose their teams depending on how many badges the challenger has, 2. Team Star leaders know that you're taking out the other leaders and can bring stronger teams accordingly and 3. the Titans gain their power from a specific herb; just say that the ones you get to first haven't been feeding on them as long and that's why they're weaker) and would give the player a very good sense that what they're doing is being acknowledged by the rest of the region. As it is, there are some roadblocks in the form of the region itself (you don't have access to all traversal skills initially), but that's not foolproof. One part has a Gym Leader with levels around 17, the neighboring Team Star leader (the second Star leader you're "supposed" to face in terms of levels, but the game's not gonna tell you that) with levels around 27(!) and the Gym Leader further down the road with levels around 23, all on the same part of the region. Now granted, these are the perils of an open-world game, it's not necessary to defeat the toughest challenge to get to either of the others and the penalties for losing aren't harsh (and you can just reload the save) but it's a rude awakening if you're going in blind. I went into the first Gym Leader and the Team Star leader with essentially the same team in terms of levels (some Pokemon swapped around to hit their weaknesses) and went from sweeping the Gym with ease to scraping by on one Pokemon and Revive spam on Team Star, in the span of half an hour! A scaling level curve would prevent jumps like that and also help avoid the anticlimax of randomly, say, going into your third Gym Leader and finding out they were supposed to be the first (or vice versa...). Of course, if you rushed the Gym Leaders then the other challenges would still start easy, but it would still be a better system IMO. All that stuff aside, Scarlet and Violet definitely aren't bad games. There are technical issues (which, again, might not bother him too much) and it does oddly feel like a bit of a step back from Legends Arceus in some ways if he's played that, but if he can get on with the open world setup (and doesn't mind the occasional big difficulty spike and forced turnaround that comes with going in blind) he should have fun with it. I know I am, despite my complaints

Basically, if you want a safe and cheaper (but with less content, since it's not a full game) option, go for the expansion pack, otherwise Scarlet and Violet. Do note that he might find it a bit boring to go from Scarlet and Violet back to Sword and Shield, though...
If Legends Arceus is an option (and he hasn't played it yet) I'd actually rank it above either of them tbh, but it is more of a departure from the formula compared to them and it gets extra points for me because of the Diamond and Pearl nostalgia, which I don't remember if he's played or not.

Thanks for all the info. He was into the idea of Arceus back before we got him Shield, but he seems to have gone off the idea now. (kids are fickle!)
He doesn't have any real experience with open world games, so I could see him getting frustrated if he's stuck on a battle because he's underpowered. Though I guess I can give him some pointers.
As long as the expansion pass isn't a rip off and has a decent amount of content (HLTB says about 11 hours for main story) then I might get him that first.

I'd say Scarlet would be a bad pick in that case. Arceus was a bit guided at least, but Scarlet just lets you wander off with a bunch of icons to head towards and no order to tackle them in. I went towards the nearest one and got absolutely wrecked. Went to the nearest base next and was clearly underlevelled and pretty much gave up on the game at that point.

^ Case in point. The descriptions do mention something along the lines of "Oh this Team Star guy is fairly weak because he just started using this type" or "This Gym Leader is middle-of-the-pack" but apart from that all you really have to go on is proximity to the Academy, and that's not always reliable... They really should have made a scaling system like I suggested above. (For the record, the "correct" path for the first few seems to be Bug Gym Leader -> Grass Gym Leader -> Rock type Titan -> Flying Type Titan -> Dark Team Star -> Electric Gym Leader -> Fire Team Star... Which bounces you around all over the place.

I'm very pleasantly surprised at how good the GB and GBA games look on the Switch screen, even at full screen they scale up very nicely. I wasn't too fussed about it before but now looking forward to revisiting them - the GBA in particular has a fantastic library so hopefully they'll make the most of it.

Yeah, they look great. I like the colour options for Gameboy games, too. The green works well for short Tetris stints in bed, when I should already be sleeping.

I don't suppose they have Warioware Twisted and it works with the Switch's gyro?

They have a Warioware game, but I don't think it is Twisted. However, I wouldn't actually put it past them to get that game on the service eventually.
Edit - It's Warioware Inc. Not Twisted.

I don't understand why we haven't got Geometry Wars 3 on the Switch. Feels like I could spend hours with it. At this point, I'm pretty sure the only portable GW we ever got was the old DS game, and it's not exactly ideal.
(well, not counting the Steam Deck)

All this talk about pokemon and sons reminds me of the summer I gave Pokemon Platinum Diamond to JuniorFE (his first pokemon game) for his birthday. He was not impressed to say the least, told me off for gifting him a game he knew nothing about; I was fairly devastated as I left for work... by the time I returned home later that evening, my missus informed me he barely put the console down ALL FREAKING DAY!!!

So the lad got a Switch for Christmas, his first computer game system. Sure i've mentioned previous that he would play maths games or the chase the dot game on the iPad for the cat...
Anyway, he has been loving Legend Of Zelda Link's Awakening since then. His birthday is tomorrow and we have got him Breath Of the Wild. He is absolutely entranced by it, watching the trailer 3, 4 times a day for the last week.
Can't wait to see how it goes. His aunties have got him Mario Kart as well, so that will be a good counter to BotW

What a game to start with! Link's Awakening was my fondest memory of my Gameboy as a kid and the Switch game was lovely to play through.

Yeah, it is a cracker. A nice way to come to computer games as well I think - almost classic gameplay on a 2.5d format.
It's all very exciting and wholesome.

Genuinely dread to think how many hours my boy has put into BotW. Hundreds and hundreds. Especially when you factor in you can only have one save game, and he's restarted it multiple times.

Erm, just read this again - what’s this about only one save? I need to be able to have a game to stay one step ahead of him! Links Awakening I was Googling hints and doing it then helping him! Can you have one per profile do you think?

The entire Bioshock Collection is on sale for £8 at the moment and my partner picked it up earlier this week. I was watching her play through Infinite this evening and it looks and runs amazingly. I had heard they were decent ports, but they're very nice on the eyes. 30fps, but given the general pacing of those games, it plays perfectly.
I thought I'd just share that, should anyone be considering picking them up.

Hmmm. Tempting. Why do I keep wanting to buy games on switch that I already have on PC?
