I bought Sonic Mania when it was on sale. Played it for 20 minutes. Got pissed off at repeatedly drowning in the Chemical Plant Zone and went back to playing BOTW. Kids are occasionally playing through Sonic 2, getting pissed off at repeatedly drowning in the Chemical Plant Zone, going back to fortnite, and then a week or two later repeating the same thing. Glad to hear Sonic Mania is an authentic experience.

Been really enjoying the pick up and play nature of the switch lately. Been struggling to get into longer games (GOW:R is the latest one I’m struggling to get through) but really enjoying just having 10 - 30 Minutes of Mario Kart and Splatoon 3. Odd Picross and Mini Motorways session too. Rocket League and Fortnite are good for pickup and play games too.

Underwater Sonic has never been fun. Counterpoint: Sonic Colours. Not better than the rest of the game, but much more tolerable underwater gameplay than usual from what I remember.

Underwater Sonic has never been fun. Underwater sections in any 2D platforming game are always the weakest bits.

I dont mind the original labyrinth zone. Just pretend you're in 'bullet time'. Makes it much more fun.

I posted a few weeks ago about a little gem called Pinball Wizard. It's a rather cute take on pinball that replaces the pinball with a wizard and a table with a dungeon. It's as simple as using flippers and a couple of easy to grasp skills to clear rooms of enemies, unlock doors and climb a deadly tower. The game eases you into the experience with a simple level-up system. You earn experience and gold from every run you have and they are put towards unlocking new abilities and increasing your health, speed and attack damage. Eventually (after a couple of hours) you'll become powerful enough to reach the top of the tower and defeat the Zelda-like boss with ease. At first glance this will seem like an disappointingly short game, but once you've ascended the tower and seen the credits roll, you unlock the Dungeon mode. This is the real meat of the game. It's essentially closer to a more traditional pinball experience in which you're simply chasing a high score in a single dungeon/table. The tables on offer are basically a number of conjoined rooms with enemies that must be defeated, in order to unlock access to the final boss room, where you'll score the most points. At this point you're essentially chasing high scores on a leaderboard, but besides 2 standard dungeons (that offer a decent pinball challenge) there is a third 'daily' dungeon. These dungeons are a little easier, but they change daily and keeps things feeling fresh. I've managed to top the leaderboards on a few occassions, but it's been nice seeing the same few names in the top 10 and it has given me extra purpose to play. Just to beat the familiar faces when I have the time of day. It's a great little game, however you play it, and one of my favourite 'indie' games of the year. Cheap and cheerful, so I thought I would plug it again on here. It visually reminds me a lot of Graceful Explosion Machine. That was made by Vertex Pop, but this game was made by Frosty Pop. Apparently there is no connection, but a weird coincidence none the less. Here's the Youtube Launch Trailer

Sounds great - I do love me some pinball.
I've added it to my wishlist on Deku.

Looking forward to it. Should look quite nice on a portable screen. I hope they don't mess up the button layout.

I just found at that owners of Rare Replay on Xbox get Goldeneye for free \o/ That's unexpected and very nice!

Yeah, it looks like neither party can sell the game on its own, so its either a freebie or a digital rental.
I wonder if Rare Replay owners will have permanent access to this game, or if at some point all parties lose the rights to distribute it.

I wonder if Rare Replay owners will have permanent access to this game, or if at some point all parties lose the rights to distribute it. That would be a messy situation indeed. At the very least, I'm guessing digital owners will have access to it permanently. The game has been added to my account as if I had bought it (the store says "owned", which it doesn't say for Gold or Game Pass games), so it would be pretty crappy if they just removed it like that. Anyway, performance isn't great even on Series S. Makes me think the emulation by Code Mystics isn't all that. Maybe, if Nintendo uses their own emulator, things will actually be better on the Switch?

Well, I imagine even the Switch version will require a few emulator patches. Few N64 games release in a great state.

Other than the control options, which YT has some good guides to fixing, I've been enjoying it. 30FPS has it looking like my rose tinted glasses remember it.

Not a bad way to play it. I remember tanking the frame rate on purpose, with rockets and mines. Its weird that frame rates did nothing to dampen my experience back in the day. Unless it was a dodgy 3D port on SNES hardware!

That's annoying, the hori split pad can't have it's buttons remapped to flip the sticks. Literally unplayable.

Thought about picking up the n64 controller for the switch.
Jeez sold out and selling for 200 on ebay. Why they not stocking this thing!!

I never played Goldeneye back in the day. I abandoned my beloved Nintendo for Playstation. Jumped on this immediately to see what the fuss is about and I have to say... I LOVE IT! Yes the controls are terrible but set it to Agent with auto aim and it's a blast. The last FPS game I genuinely loved was Medal of honour on PS1. Multiple objectives, carefully placed enemies, great sound, atmosphere and feedback. All these things were lost in the spectacle as hardware improved IMO and Goldeneye is virtually identical to MOH In every way. I'm genuinely excited to get back to it. God I miss when shooters were designed to reward good play and encourage exploration before Hollywood style spectacle took over.

Bit ironic too since this game was actually based on a film.

Bit ironic too since this game was actually based on a film. I never thought of that! I stand by my point though even if I failed to articulate it well 😃

Nintendo Direct dropping at midnight (my time, so 12 hours from now), focused mostly on Nintendo Switch games releasing in the first half of 2023 (so probably Tears of the Kingdom, Octopath 2 etc) Not sure if embedding will work properly since it's a not-yet-started live, but here: www.youtube.com/live/yMdUSVSEp7U?feature=shareEdit: yeah it didn't. Oh well, the link does work at least

@bill - absolutely no idea when we'll see that. It got started from scratch a couple of years ago by Retro, so probably a couple more years away.
/edit Bloody hell, it was four years ago that it moved to Retro. Maybe something soon then...

Switch 2 that launches with both Zelda and Metroid.
Seriously though, the Metroid Dread developers are apparently long into another Metroid project and that excites me more than Prime 4!

Hm. Can't say I'm too happy about that one, to be honest. For the precedent it sets if nothing else.
Although at least if there's one game I'd expect to be worth the increased price tag in terms of content it'd probably be that one...
