Anyone else looking to join or renew a family membership - there are a few people in the thread here fontgeek.io/thread/571/all-family-membership?page=3 and I think we've got slightly too many people for one group and too few to fill two... so please register your interest over there. I'd be happy to set one of these up, quite keen to get it going for this weekend...

Yeah, it has a very active online scene, but its still better in local play. Bowling never gets old.

Its an odd decision, but honestly it gets old fast. You don't pay much attention to how anybody else looks. It doesn't have the same impact as the old Mii creator stuff in the old games.

Anyone using the Skull & Co Neogrip on the OLED? I've had a look at various grips and that one seems the best option overall. From what I've read the Satisfye grip is more comfortable, but it's much more expensive with extortionate shipping prices from the US. I've had both and I prefer the Skull & Co one - mainly because you can still dock the Switch with it attached. No real difference in comfort IMHO. It's the one I use now. Thanks, I bought the Neogrip and from first impressions it might be a game changer for me, even though I've never had any major issues with the joycons. It massively increases the comfort level and eliminates joycon wobble too, making the console feel a lot sturdier. Good thing about the Skull & Co one is that it offers three different grip attachments, and the smallest ones are still pretty slim. I also got the max carry case with it, which is absolutely massive, although it does mean it can hold all the grip attachments and a bunch of other stuff too. Anyway, highly recommended for anyone looking for a good Switch grip.

I did not realise I couldn't use the vouchers I've already purchased unless I renew my Nintendo Online membership… Bastards.

Has anyone been following the Pokémon leaks recently? Was wondering if they contain any info about the co-op mode?
Mostly interested in the game for that. Only really played Sword/Shield (besides playing one via emulation years and years ago - don't even know which one) and found it a bit dull, but I could see it being enjoyable with a buddy. I'm guessing the co-op isn't going to let you do story battles and gyms together, but I would hope the whole overworld should be playable together.

I've actually been doing this thing where ever since whichever Direct it was that revealed the professors (probably beginning of the year or something) I've looked at literally nothing about the game besides the release date. (edit: whoops, apparently the last trailer I looked at was beginning of June... eh, most of the leaks happened after that anyway, so I still haven't seen anything ) Pretty weird for me, but after Legends Arceus and knowing this one is more open-world I was already excited about it even after the D/P remakes soured me. And if I've got no need for more info... might as well fly blind otherwise for the experience, right? /probably jinxed it

You mean those game vouchers? That's mental. Hang on..... so if you buy the two for 80 vouchers they can only be "used" if you have an active online account? That seems ridiculous

Yup, utterly ridiculous. If askew isn't in a family group at the moment I would be happy for him to temporaraly be in ours for nothing so he can use his vouchers. stixxuk runs the group I am in.

To be fair, you can't buy them unless you have an active account anyway right?
Or is this you can't play the game (you bought with the vouchers) unless you have an active account?!

You buy the vouchers to use at a later date, your active account expires, you then want to use the vouchers and find out that you cannot.

Ah! False economy! Probably best buying when you want to spend them right away! I've seen some of the games in that offer go on sale cheaper than £40 which is shit, obv.

Must admit. Quite looking forward to the next Pokémon game with my boy. Got us back into arceus to finish off before it comes out. I liked the Pokédex/ research level system in that, gave you reason to swap out Pokémon in your party (which normally ends up being fixed halfway through the games).

I initially thought the £84 voucher was an ok deal, didn't save you much but worthwhile enough if there were two games you wanted.
That is only true if you could only get the games for £50 though. For the most part, they are available somewhere for £40, even as pre-orders (new Pokémon is £40 from Zatu).
Smash Brothers and, I think, Breath of the Wild are £60 RRP. So, vouchers are likely worth it if you haven't got either of those games yet, but not much else.

So I’ve been contemplating getting a switch to play zelda. The cheapest I can find a combo is £300, is that a joke? 5 year old game and tech that is around 10 years old?
Nintendo are such wankers

Nintendo are such wankers Still sell like hotcakes so guess they can justify it. Should be soke black Friday deals in next few weeks but won't be a huge drop. If prepared to go second hand you can also pick up some good deals. You looking at the OLED?

Thanks for the kind offer! Hadn't seen this before I purchased the renewal from CDKeys this morning, so the deed is done.
(And yes, it was to pre-order Pokemon Violet - not that I made much progress in Sword)

It would be nice if Nintendo lowered their stupid prices though, seen as it probably costs about 30 quid to make one they are so old. Horrible company

Tactics Ogre just got a rerelease (Reborn) on Switch and the Playstations
From what I've read, they've made some changes to the gameplay that make it a fair bit easier (and more forgiving) than the original

Sounds like a few of you are into pokemon, so I have a question. (I know almost nothing)
My son (8) wants to get a pokemon game for Switch, having never played one before. Is there one that you'd recommend as a starter game?
I had a look and they all seem reasomably well reviewed on Switch.
Let's Go Pikachu and Diamond/Pearl are remakes I think? The advantage here might be that he'd know more of the characters from the cartoon. (he's up to Black & White i think)
Sword/Shield is a bit modernized, I heard.
Arceus sounds more like a Zelda BotW style open world game. Seems well reviewed, but all the reviews seem to boil down to it being a refreshing change from the formula. But given this is a first game that isn't really a factor. I'm wondering if a more linear style story might be better for an 8 year old.
Did I just see that there's a new one with co-op coming out? If it's split screen local drop-in/out co-op then that might be very appealing. Assuming I can persuade him to keep hs birthday money in his pocket that long.

Depends on ability really, I think Let’s go Eevee and sword/shield are much easier to comprehend and play than Arceus and the new one, so probably better to start with those for an 8 year old. And I imagine going back to the older ones after scarlet and Arceus would be a hard sell, so get them out the way first.

Bill in the rain As a quick rundown from someone that's played them all except Let's Go (but I am familiar with it): The Let's Go games actually have a big departure from the norm in that there's barely any wild Pokemon battles, for the most part you only catch them (a la Pokemon GO) and the meat of the battles is with trainers. For me that's a bit of a turn-off but it, along with some removed/changed mechanics (that do exist in full in Sword/Shield and D/P) does simplify the experience somewhat. It's also the only one (so far?) to have local co-op, and Jessie, James and Meowth from the anime also factor in the story. The D/P remakes are probably the closest you're going to get to a traditional Pokemon experience on the Switch in terms of mechanics. Sword and Shield are also fairly traditional (and probably a bit easier than the D/P remakes due to more grinding options) with a nice open world twist with the Wild Area. Legends Arceus is straight up open world and encourages rotating your team through its Pokedex, but does have a fairly linear main story, the exploration is largely for sidequests and just to see the world and catch Pokemon. As for the new ones, I've been keeping myself mostly in the dark on purpose, but what little I know seems to indicate they're expanding on Sw/Sh and Arceus rather than making it D/P traditional, with a more open world, the co-op and such. Overall, I'd say go for either D/P or Sw/Sh as a first game. Let's Go seems simpler and so more introductory, but the other two are the better traditional option IMO (and since he hasn't played the originals or Platinum, he's also not going to get bogged down in the "originals vs remakes" arguments...). Plus Sw/Sh might be a good stepping stone for the new ones. Legends Arceus is definitely a very good game though, and while the others will get him more familiar with the standard formula, it's also absolutely worth playing at some point. Especially if you pair it with the D/P remakes either before or after to catch all the references between them.

All that said, do note that both Sw/Sh and D/P have a bit of a difficulty spike right at the end. D/P's final boss was actually the one thing that was made legitimately tougher than the original, I already don't know how the hell I managed to beat her back in the originals (seven years old innit) and I actually got blindsided big time this time around... Oh well. If I were going to lose a fight to any main story CPU trainer, it might as well be Cynthia. Her team deserves respect
