To update on my own experience, I'm enjoying it too. There are times when I'm clearing up some side quests that I wonder why I'm doing them, as they are mostly uninteresting "collect X items", "kill X beasties" or "deliver this thing to that person". The environments have actually surprised me as being more interesting to explore than I initially thought though, so I don't mind running around them too much. Enjoying the main story quite a bit though and the combat has become a bit more interesting now that I'm mixing up the characters a little more and not just sticking with Shulk as the lead. At chapter 11 now just fought Mumkhar , with just under 40 hours on the clock. It does take a bit of building affinity with the various areas for the meatier sidequests to start popping up, but once they do you'll like them more I bet. There's plenty of longer quest chains to sink your teeth into eventually (including a really big one that starts pretty early and is progress sensitive, so keep an eye on your clock icons). Plus the rewards get really good as you go, powerful unique equipment, access to otherwise inaccessible areas, art books for levelling up your techniques, something a bit spoilery so I won't elaborate, even some story and lore you otherwise wouldn't see. The area affinity system is actually a really nice way to integrate the gameplay into the world imo. At first you're relatively unknown to the various areas (even in Colony 9 Shulk's basically the nice guy tech whiz rather than a badass like Dunban), so the NPC's only bother giving you odd jobs and chores, but you gradually start making a name for yourself and people open up to you more, with more personal requests and important tasks. I'm not sure if that was the actual idea behind the system (rather than just "We don't want every sidequest available from the start") but it helps flesh out the world a bit more. Glad to hear you're enjoying the combat more, too I just wish there was a better way to track certain items you need for Colony 6. It's already a long game but I do feel like my time is being somewhat wasted trying to track down a bloody monkey fossil that only spawns randomly... ha.

Oh and I've got Mario Strikers on pre-order. Football + Mario. No brainer really.

Demo of Fire Emblem Warriors is up on the Eshop, looks pretty sizeable (and is a 7.7gb download!)
I'm not feeling it to be honest, I really wish it had the 60fps mode from the original and I can't remember a thing about the last game so I really don't care about any of these characters. Not that I did in the previous game but I'm pretty sure there wasn't this much talking.

About that, and Vandelay you should probably see this, too. Apparently, in the Definitive Edition, not only can you always see what's needed for your current reconstruction levels through the quest log, but near the end of the game you unlock the option to buy any materials you need from the Time Attack shop! Sure you have to grind the Noponstones, but it still takes way less time than praying you land the 1% (maybe less, fuck those things) chance for a Black Liver Bean to spawn or having to deal with the level 90something guarding the one spawn spot for the Ice Cabbages all the time

Unless you mean you don't remember anyone from Three Houses, in which case I totally get it. It's why I'm apprehensive about starting it before I actually play Three Houses at least for a little while, even if the story ends up being wildly different from TH's paths I'd still like to know stuff (and I don't want to just look it up instead of playing...) And while it would be nice to have the option for anyone interested, considering it's a Warriors game I'm not sure if the Switch could keep up at 60 fps with all the bullshit going on at once... Then again I've never really been the type to care about framerate all that much unless there were serious slowdown issues, so

Spent a little while wondering around trying to find Ice Cabbages, so guess I might as well wait until I can just buy the materials.

Then again I've never really been the type to care about framerate all that much unless there were serious slowdown issues, so Nope, no connection to the previous FE Warriors. Apparently it's an alternate version of the Three Houses story (which is what I was referring to as 'the last game') so I don't think you strictly need to play anything; the characters are the same and you get three routes with the same houses, but the story is new, and since there's a new 'main' character I'm sure it's going to diverge quite a lot while still hitting some of the main plot points. I'm sure I played another game which did that fairly recently but I can't for the life of me remember which one it was.
When docked it hovers around 40 much of the time - I reckon it could have a solid shot at 60. The previous FEW had a 60fps mode and it was great, if a bit blurry. It really made a difference though as that game ended up getting quite fast and frantic, moving characters around and managing the battlefield.
I'm going to play a bit more on my commute tomorrow, as maybe once the game gets out of its own way it will hopefully improve. And since it's an unlocked framerate, there's always the emulation solution if I do pick it up.

I was thinking of another material for the level 90something monster, actually. Ice Cabbages are still rough though, they're only found at night as it is and their spawn chance and spots are also pretty bad.

While I still remember this... Vandelay you can trade items with NPCs. I don't think there's anything important you can miss by not doing this, but a lot of them have monster materials or field collectibles, and you can trade as many times as you want if you have enough items and time to click through menus. In addition, if you trade them something sufficiently valuable (overshoot the cash value of what you're getting by a certain amount, depends on the NPC) they'll also give you a different, bonus item. And when an NPC goes to a different area for whatever reason (even if they're only there for like five minutes because of a quest) they'll have different items to trade. I don't recall it being explained in-game beyond a bullet point in an early tutorial but it can be very helpful for quests so I might as well point it out

I'm pretty sure if you have a higher affinity you craft better items... maybe.

I've not done much crafting (although, just got the mini-furnace which will encourage me to do more), but higher affinity will help. It lets you do more cycles, so can get those percentages up higher. Each person also has a different benefit they contribute, which is indicated when you are selecting who to use. I probably should use crafting more, as gems are really powerful. JuniorFE - Thanks for the trading tips. I was aware of it, but not engaged with it at all. Every time I've glanced at it I've not been that interested in what they are offering, so haven't bothered delving into it. Will take a closer look.

To be honest I never used crafting all that much either. You can find many powerful gems as quest rewards and treasures, or already slotted into unique equipment, so aside from patching a few holes (like with Shulk's Monado) and a specific build for a certain party member I pretty much rolled with what I found without much trouble. Now if you're going to fight superbosses or really delve into the time attacks you'll probably want more specialised setups but at that point it's not just gems you'll want to look into, there's stuff like linking Skills between party members that you can finish the game without even knowing about

Any word on an E3-like Nintendo Direct? Not yet but I'd imagine one is coming soonish. Possibly end of June/beginning of July since Xeno 3 is coming out at end of July. There's been a lot of mini videos on Twitter and YouTube showcasing random bits from that one, actually.

Some leak suggested 15th, but that was because of a dated trailer for a game that was likely to appear in the direct. Couldn't really be bothered to look it up, being a rumour and all.

Oof Xenoblade 2 is on offer for £33. Seems hard to get hold of physically at a good price. Should I get that or delve into 3 once I’m done with the first?

At that price I'd say go for it but there's always the caveat that the redesigned battle system and new gameplay mechanics (the Blade/element and Affinity system in particular is quite expansive) might not be your cup of tea. It's still a really good game if it clicks, mind, but it does do a slightly worse job of explaining its mechanics to you (and introduces new mechanics later into the story than the original, too). Unfortunately I can't think of any spoiler-free gameplay videos you could look up to give you an idea... FWIW Xeno 3's story and world seem to take cues from both 1 and 2, so even if you don't go for it you'll likely need to watch the story anyways... Still, at that price you can get both the game and its DLC for less total money than the base game when not on sale, so it might be worth taking the plunge if you're enjoying 1. Just be warned that it has quite a few differences, that's all

Decent sale, anyone played spiritfarer and art of rally? Wondered how people got on with it? Heard AOR has iffy performance but since had a few patches.

Seems to be a common theme for these types of games to go out of print, then stay at £50.

Yeah, I was surprised to see how expensive XC 2 is. I have ended up with an extra copy of Splatoon 2, so was going to take it to CEX and get XC 2 with the vouchers, but looks like they are selling it for £50.
I would rather get the physical version, especially considering the recent closing of the eshop on the Wii and Wii U. Splatoon 2 will get me £20 of vouchers, so about the same as the sale price. If you don't mind digital, than probably best to just get on sale.

Seemed like a prime opportunity to reprint XC 2.
I saw they reprinted Samus Returns as the price has plummeted on CEX (they were selling it for £60+).

It's still a really good game if it clicks, mind, but it does do a slightly worse job of explaining its mechanics to you Now there's an understatement I absolutely loved XC2 (even more than the first), but I really needed sources like gamefaqs to explain the mechanics. Why on earth they did not add the super helpful tutorials from the first is beyond me. They explain it once and then you go "wait, what?" and then it's gone forever

Yeah it was leaked Neon White would be releasing on the 15th. Everyone, unsurprisingly assumed we be getting a Nintendo direct with a shadow drop on that date, but It appeared in the SGF last night.

It wouldn't really make sense for 2 to do one for 1 anyway, they're very loosely connected. 3 might potentially do it, but considering we don't have a clue what the location nods and character lookalikes we saw in the trailers mean for the overall story I don't see it happening there either.

There's a genuinely decent sale going on at the moment with a lot of decent indie games, retro compilations and older ports that are nicely priced. Better than you'd expect for a Switch sale. I'm very much tempted to set aside some money and go on a mini spree. Even with a small backlog on the side.

Already picked up OlliOlli World in the sale. It’s fun.
Tempted by Alien Isolation, Doom and Art of Rally.
Maybe Splatoon 2, too. Never played them.
