September/October next year sounds like a safe bet.

Which probably means we won't get an announcement this year to avoid cannibalising their Christmas sales.

I was expecting an announcement around September to November, with release in March 2025. March was when the first Switch launched and that seemed to work well for them.
I suppose April could be possible, but after that you are getting into summer and I can't see them launching then. So, we are probably looking at not until next September.

Reckon it will be a November 2025 release. Sweet sweet festive sales and throw in a heavy discount for the old switch in time for Black Friday.
I'm tinkering on cashing in on my OLED for maximum cash. If they announced a wind waker/twilight princess bundle that idea would be vaporised.
Hopefully be some trade in deals if that's something they do.

With the specs leaking in 2021 for the main chip I did not expect the Switch successor to be releasing all the way in 2025.
And it also looked like Nintendo were gearing up for mass production soon what with the shipping data leak a few months back.

I for one am absolutely SHOCKED that Nintendo would consider releasing a console with cheap and outdated tech in it.

At this point I think they're going to have a lot of day one games with it by waiting by intentionally delaying it for so long. I am looking forward to seeing what they can pump out with this visually because some devs really did wonders with the old ass switch tech.

I'm still expecting really good things, Nvidia is about 4 years ahead of AMD on the GPU front so it shouldn't matter too much that it's outdated

Is it based on the 20 series or 30 series tech?

I'm not going to be surprised when it turns out that the day 1 games are all updated versions of games being released for Switch 1 between now and then. All for you to re-buy for your new system at the bargain price of £70!

When it comes to game on physical like Metroid 4 yeah i think there will be two versions. It's the digital side where I could totally see them making you buy another version because Nintendo reasons.

I'm just assuming they are going to screw people, so hopefully I end up being pleasantly surprised. It is the main reason why I can't see myself buying a new Switch game between now and when they actually let us know the situation with backwards compatibility/upgraded versions.

I'm almost certain that it'll be backwards compatible, but won't have any graphical enhancements. That will be a brand new purchase.
Some of the ports I've played on the Switch have been stellar. The OLED screen really pops, and I don't really notice the 30fps.
They have to make this come comfortable though. If anyone on here has a Portal, the comfort level is through the roof, compared to the Switch.

Is it based on the 20 series or 30 series tech? 30 series, with some the frame gen tech from 40 series! Although it remains to be seen how useful that will be in such a low power GPU.

My very low-level wish is that they find room for a stylus somewhere.

My only interest in owning Nintendo consoles is Pokemon and I have no hopes GF will be able to get a properly functioning and performing game on the Switch 2.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong I absolutely respect their devs for wringing every last bit of power out of the hardware, while you just get unoptimised messes on the other consoles. It'd just be nice to have them release a console that doesn't feel a generation or two behind everything else, though.

I just want the joycons not to be fragile junk that breaks every 10 minutes, built in voice chat, and parental controls that work for more than one kid. I'm fine with the graphics at the moment tbh.

Voice chat won’t ever happen now. Nintendo just won’t take responsibility for anything like that. I did like the idea of chatting through a phone. Definitely more comfortable and social than a headset, but with discord and group calling on Messenger/whatsapp, it’s something Nintendo can completely ignore. Saves them having to manage online abuse, etc…

Graphically, I would be happy with the same as now, but with a resolution bump to not look like arse on a big screen (doesn't even need to be 4k, 1440p would do fine) and consistent 60fps (or, if a game really can't do that and has to drop to 30fps, it needs to be rock solid). Resolution increase only really needs to be when docked, as it mostly is ok on the small screen.
Art style of Nintendo games carries them along way, so don't think they necessarily need to push technically advanced graphics features. Performance in games like Tears of the Kingdom is awful though. It might be impressive what they managed to eek out of the system, but the final results are still poor. Then you have something like Pokémon Scarlet/Violet, which shouldn't have ever been released in the state it is in.

I don't get this argument though as they'd also make (more) magic if it wasn't outdated tech.

Still got plenty to play on Switch so not bothered about it being a ways off yet. Also not fussed about specs- it'll have Zelda and Mario on it. Just so long as the games are stable
Is TotK worse than BotW? I did notice some drops in that (usually during transparency effects) but nothing too outrageous. The only performance related issue with a Nintendo game that affected my enjoyment that pops into my head is the stuttering in the Link's Awakening remake

TOTK should've 100% been a Switch 2 release. People can attest to the fact that it ran fine outside of X, Y, Z circumstances all they like but as someone who is not accustomed to the Switch's shoddy performance and I don't have a boner for the platform, it was unacceptable. Emulated it performed well, though.
Your tolerance is subjective of course but it's personally not a compromise I will/could make.

Personally I've never had any issues with performance in TotK or Pokemon Scarlet, though I've only dabbled. Just asked those who shall not be named, and they said they've never had any issues either. We're obviously not very sensitive. Saves them having to manage online abuse, etc… I hate doing it through a phone. It's so dumb. You have to place the phone down near you and then shout at it. Plus if you actually want to wear a headset (for sound quality or so as not to annoy others in the room) then you can't hear them anyway. Plus you and they are still shouting. I guess you could plug a headset into the phone, but then you can't hear the game. Maybe there's some form of complex cable setup that would allow you to hear both the game and the players simultaneously, and still be able to talk? Then on the other hand you have Fortnite on switch and the voice chat just works.
