Oh, and as if that wasn't enough those talking heads all seem to have said their goodbyes and fucked off for good as soon as you clear the cafe.

One thing I have noticed, if you're looking to try and make AI races as competitive as you can, is to work up towards a PP limit rather than down. Adding ballast and engine limits isn't enough to stop you rolling over the field if your car is a beast fundamentally. Its much better to upgrade a car to near the limit.

I switched on the extra car porn (ray tracing) function early. Ooh, I am in eye candy heaven. I really don't find the 30 fps that jarring what with all the motion blur, depth of field etc. Just effects the intros and cinematic replays.
I am also really loving the cockpit view in this. I didn't really take to it in GT sport but this seems a lot easier to see the track.
Might be because of a bigger TV and a fair bit of muscle memory from the courses, either way it is great.

I’ve done zero research but is the Thrustmaster T248 any good?

I’ve done zero research but is the Thrustmaster T248 any good? Meant to be a really good entry wheel but the gear paddles are ridiculously loud. I brought my first wheel a month or so back, and got the Logitech G29 which Ive been really impressed with. I think if the paddles weren't so loud on the T248 I probably would have gone with that wheel, as it present options to upgrade pedals. With the Logitech you are pretty much set in with what you get if you play on console. When I was doing my research, A lot of people recommended the Thrustmaster RS GT 300 as its belt driven (smoother) and has better force feedback and the option to swap out the actual wheel part for other types of wheel (F1 for example). But its been quite hard to get hold off in recent months and its about a £100 quid more with a spotty reliability history (which may just be exacerbated by the internet). But I been impressed with the G29. Its made racing games a lot more immersive, force feedback is pretty good and it definitely not just a toy, its a proper piece of kit. Belt driven, and direct drive wheels are really meant to up the ante, but the G29 is still pretty good. A lot of sim racers still use it, and it seems the biggest upgrade you can actually make is the pedals rather than the wheel itself. The G29 gets a pretty rough time of it on some message boards, but what swung it is was the YouTube community recommending it a lot as a good entry wheel. Seeing them use it and discuss it, it seemed a solid choice. I think in a coupe of years time If I am still using the G29 a lot I will get a DD wheel. Start cheap, enjoy it. Then go all in.

Big piece of advice: Buy intermediate and wet tyres before you start doing the races that have fuel/tyre wear, or fuck around and find out. I just lost a 12 second lead in the last half of the last lap by an AI who put a set of wet boots on.

Really looking forward to the longer races when the rain starts to come into play. The gradual way it builds up/dries out is brilliantly done. Shame the rain effects are a bit underwhelming though.

Did my first rainy race last night. Is the rain variable though? Because I failed miserably, went to the tuning shop, tried again, but the rain was less severe.

In the races that apply wear and fuel the weather is very much variable and tyres make a massive difference. I just did one at the Red Bull Ring that started during the day in the dry and finished pissing it down in the wet at night. I thought I'd be able to hang on for the last lap for a cheesy computer game win but the AI that stuck intermediates on was 25 seconds a lap faster than me immediately.
Even though I got mugged of the win on the last corner of the 10th and last lap I couldn't help but grin from ear to ear at how good the weather effects have been implemented.

Following 3 other cars in bonnet cam, visibility goes to zero.

Yeah the spray and stuff is very well done to be fair. I think it's just everything else looks so good I was a little underwhelmed with the effect. The way it changes the track is amazing though.
Crazy that Drive Club still blows everything else out of the water with rain effects.

Yeah the actual rain effects look quite muted in clear air and sometimes you can't even tell it has started to fall but the spray that comes off cars is probably the most well done I've seen in a game. Polar opposites in quality, it's weird.

Big piece of advice PT 2: Make sure you check the weather radar during the long, wear based races.
I just took my second strategy L in a row. Thought I was being a smartarse by hopping in for a set of intermediates just as the track was wet enough to start throwing spray off my car. Turns out flicking over to the radar with the D-Pad it was just a quick shower and the track dried out rapidly, leaving me to burn out my tyres and beaten down into 3rd on the last lap.
I fucking love this shit.

Just been reminded that my ho is out on Friday night. Would there be any interest in trying to get some multilayer on the go?

Oh man, I just managed to use lift and coast in order to stretch 5 laps worth of fuel out into 6 so I didn't have to do another pit stop. This game makes me do a sex wee.

I might be able to fall out with the Mrs and get her to stomp up to bed around that time if we've got a few interested.

Is this absolutely worth getting? I’ve always liked racing games, but it’s another expensive game…

How do you guys take big banked corners like at Daytona? Just like one big corner or do you take it as two? Just I notice there are several apex markers

I'd be up for that, just let us know if it is happening as I'll have to input the PS+ code I got back in November. Edit: server maintenance/game update today 7am to around 9am GMT

A good budget starter is good for me. I had a Logitech Driving Force GT way back on PS3 and it was a noisy bastard but so damn fun. Just a shame I bought it towards the start of the PS4 and it wasn't compatible which proper shafted me.. never bothered with a wheel since.

Polar opposites in quality, it's weird. The problem with the spray is that it has no effect on the windscreen whatsoever. It looks just weird when it has stopped raining, but the road is still wet. No wipers, not a single drop on the windscreen, while you can‘t see shit on front of you from all the water in the air.

Yeah I don't use cockpit view but I wasn't particularly impressed with how water interacted with the windscreen. I wonder how much being on the PS4 has affected the need to compromise on certain aspects. Looks like all the focus has been on the track conditions.

Speaking of rain I tackled the Porsche cup last night at Spa. Does the game warn you beforehand that it's likely to rain during an event? The event started in sunshine and then turned to rain (the dynamic weather looked and worked great btw) and I was caught short on soft tyres. I assumed it was a random bit of bad luck and tried again but the rain started at the exact same point in the race. I then quit out and restarted with intermediates and of course, no fucking rain.
The AI frontrunner, it has to be said, looked completely unaffected by the track conditions despite me slipping all over the place. I guess you have to assume he was on intermediate tyres...

Yeah he will have been on intermediates, I got caught out both ways last night. Dry tyres on a wet track and wet tyres on a dry one. You need to buy the tyres for whatever car you you're using in case you need to pit and change. Then you need to keep an eye on the weather radar (one of the dpad options) to track rain thats due/how long it is going to last.

I’m up to about menu 19 and I’ve recently done the Mustang one. Spent about a quarter of a million on buying a Mach 1 and Beasting it up including a 100g nitro pack! Great fun. Both national A and B all done on gold and just looking to finish the menus now to get to the proper racing.
