Anyone wanting to get rid of the markers, the recommended gear will give you a good idea of how much you need to slow down for the next corner. It's all I use now and it's definitely doable.

Yeah i've been using the reco gear with all assists off apart from that. Works OK most of the time, although it's not 100%.
I'm enjoying the challenge of no assists. Also put it on 2 chili difficulty and trying to make sure the car I use is around the recommended PP value. Had some good challenging races, although i'm missing out on easy money by not always coming 1st. I'd rather have a challenge though.

I try to keep around the same PP level but sometimes the urge to strap a big fat turbo to whatever I'm driving is just too much.

Yeah I use the recommended gear but there's the odd corner its way out of sync with and it pisses me off because I should be the most perfectest driver in the history of the world.
I'm not far off getting corner markers off now anyway. Most of the tracks are finding their way into my head.

Most of the tracks are finding their way into my head. That’s why I hate reverse courses so much. You do all that work to memorise tracks so you can find you inner racing peace and become one with the ebbs and flows of those winding concrete rivers. Then they flip it so none of the corners make any sense and any flow is destroyed by weird braking points and stupid cambers. Stop it.

Yeah I'm with ya. They rarely feel like they flow as well.

Been doing it with all assists off since day 1, really satisfying when you get it right. Picking a distance marker, something trackside or a particular shadow as the braking point.
Can't remember what difficulty I have it on but there are some 4 chilli races I need to do.

I think its notable that in the licence demonstrations, the demo car is often one gear higher than the recommended (ie, it doesn't change down as much).

Yeah there are a lot of corners that don't suggest the right gear and you can actually go quicker a gear up from that. But it's good as a base reference point for an upcoming braking zone and you very quickly realise after a lap or two what your actual gear should be.

God I love this fucking game. Just been racing with a PP 600 Integra Type R I've made and it's popping and whistling all over the place. They've absolutely nailed the upgrade side of it.

Immense isn't it? Just popping a set of racing tyres on, the difference in bite you get between that and a set of shitty road tyres is phenomenal. I can't wait to start really fucking about with the car setups.

Yeah it's pretty special. Did the first proper menu book wet race and was 1st going into the last lap. Forgot to pay attention to the wet level indicator and braked where I had the previous 2 laps for the first turn... oopsie. Cue about 6 cars going past me as I panic and fumble trying to reverse out of the wall.
Weird how most of the negative reviews focus on the gatekeeping aspect. Oh no. God forbid having to actually play the damn game as the dev intended rather then having instant gratification...
Kids today etc.

Honestly the Menu Books have been really useful to me. Sure, the 'Wash a Car' type stuff is fairly redundant but I've felt a really decent sense of progression as it's allowed me into incrementally faster equipment over time by going through them.

Yeah one of my main problems with sim type racing games is that everything is there from the off so I end up losing interest. I much prefer this drip feeding of better and better stuff to unlock.

Needed a higher PP American car last night for the Chevy menu, so took the Ford GT '06 for an upgrade and tune. At nearly 800 PP it's an utter monster. Been playing with assists off except for ABS, but it needs a bit of traction control to be manageable on anything twisty. You have to be very careful with the throttle coming out of corners as it just begs you to get the backend out, but it's so so much fun.
Not sure if it was in the older games, but when upgrading anything substantially it's definitely worth adding the ballast and limiter. They cost practically nothing but then let you limit the PP when you are too overpowered for an event.
Did an online race last night which was limited to 700PP so downgraded the Ford GT and I was hurtling past people out of corners (when not spinning out).

Yep, one of the things I've been guilty of in previous GT games is doing the 'endgame' stuff early by caning the licenses and going in for the endurance events and long championships from the off. It feels pointless lowering yourself to doing Sunday Cups and 2 lap hot hatch races after that, so you kind of miss out on half the game and cars on the lower half of the performance spectrum.

It is the perfect tonic from Elden Ring which is a sprawling, go anywhere type of game with no hand holding, to this, which is neatly laid out, things to tick off, nicely introduces you to new tracks, cars and upgrades.

I too am essentially sticking to following the menus, with a slight side-track into missions and licenses. It unlocks cars at a steady rate, almost forcing you to upgrade a couple but then stick with them. As a result you get a better feel for the cars, how they differ, and what fits your ability/style of driving.
Steady unlock of tracks has been decent too. Only slight criticism is how/when it unlocks multiplayer as we wanted some races on Sat and a few of my mates hadn't got there yet. But, we all do now so it's not an issue and can see why they want people to learn the basics before jumping into races with randoms.
Frustrating you can't change track once a lobby has been made though, unless I am just missing an obvious step?

Yeah the muscle cars need so much finesse but once it clicks it feels amazing to drive them and push with them. Even playing on the pad you've got to be so fucking smooth applying the accelerator with them, it's actually been nearly as much fun as the wheel at times. The game is just excellent at requiring different driving styles and providing different feel for different machinery. They've knocked it out of the park.

I don’t really think the progression has changed all that much. It’s just all tucked away behind endless menu flicking rather than just going Sunday Cup, Mushroom Cup, Japanese FF Cup etc and unlocking that way.
Same content, 300% more faff to access it.

Frustrating you can't change track once a lobby has been made though, unless I am just missing an obvious step? You could defo go back into the option screen and change track, BoP etc in Sport. So one would assume that carried over to 7? But not tried MP yet, so not 100%.

Definitely shouldn't have waited this long to start upgrade a WRX STI.

It's also FAR to easy to accidently exit out after you have set everything up.

The career will pretty much make you upgrade a Japanese AWD anyway.

Just looked it up and apparently I'm nearing the end of the menus. Anyone else got there yet? After that is it just classic "pick whatever event you like and get some golds"?

I finished the menus, found them quite addictive.
Started going through all the circuits now, doing the races I’ve missed and getting golds on the Experience thing. Which is much harder than I remember from Sport.
