I actually fired up Bioshock 2 and... yeah. I replayed 1 & Infinite when the remasters came out for PS4 and always meant to go back to 2 but you know what... The combat is shite. At the time I thought it was shite but I could forgive it with everything else being so good, but now I just can't be arsed. Maybe. I do love pissing about in Rapture mind you. I do love you, but saying B2 is better than the original is all kinds of meth influenced chatter.

I have a thing with '2's. See also: FEAR 2 being better than FEAR.
I just preferred the locations to be honest, and the Big Sister fights. It also crucially introduced being able to wield your plasmids at the same time as your weapons. I loved the little sister defending as well.

I'd love a new F.E.A.R game. Are Monolith still just making those shitty LOTR games?

Yeah, although I don't think they've released anything since Shadow of War. They also didn't do FEAR 3, which explains why it was more than a bit pap.

Yeah, I was also a little bit lukearm on Bioshock as a series. Enjoyed the first one less than I thought I would at launch, couldn't bring myself to play the second (despite owning it), and only managed about half of Infinite before getting bored and failing to return.
Given that playing System Shock 2 is one of my favourite memories from my teen gaming years, and ironically given the conversation going on in the Deathloop thread, I found that Prey (2017) was much closer to what I'd hoped to be getting when I originally played Bioshock.

Yeah, I'd be all over a new F.E.A.R. game tbh.

It's hard to say because it's just rumors so far. Nothing concrete at all. But I'd be surprised if Monolith didn't have a LOTR game ready to go concurrently with that upcoming new Amazon series.
Given that Amazon is being pretty quiet about it, and we kow nothing official, I imagine that Monolith is just following suit. Maybe it will feature characters from the new series so they can't say anything yet?

Yeah I would too but I'd like them to move away from the style of the last 2 they did which I wasn't a huge fan of.

And me also. I kept wanting to love the "Shadow of" games and even though I finished the first one, I have made two concerted efforts to get into the second but I just can't. Something isn't gelling.

Yeah, it definitely needs a bit more to it than just being a slightly worse Assassins Creed again.

I think what didn't help was it all just felt so, well, small. Walk five steps, encounter a group of orks. Take another 2, get accosted by a captain. Another 5 get accosted by another 2 captains and more orcs. I get they needed to populate the world but it REALLY felt like a video game when all I kind of wanted to do was soak up Middle Earth.

The nemesis system was really underwhelming compared to the hype too.
Orcs with silly names get an intro video where they get to slag you off a bit before fighting.

I thought it was cool to have personalised villains that you'd run into again and again, like an orc Saturday morning cartoon. That and taking control of them to go kill their friends. It was a fun system!
But the second game took it too far. Them having their little WWE taunt speeches was cute the first time, but not when you get 3 or 4 of them interrupting you for 30 seconds apiece in the middle of a fight.

Yeah that's what kept happening. At one point I had five of the fuckers at once and it was pretty much then I loudly exclaimed "No thank you Monolith" to no one in particular and put it off.

I enjoyed the first Shadow Of... game, I quite enjoyed the gameplay. The basic loop was fairly enjoyable but it felt like it lacked something, the world building was lacking.
The second game didn't offer loads more, but felt very grindy.

I liked Shadow of War more than Mordor, the combat was improved and getting like a million captains after you was actually pretty exciting. But the story was utter bollocks and the gameplay loop becomes fundamentally repetitive after a while.

Oh. I picked up the BioShock collection on sale as I'd frequently heard the first was way better than the original, which I also found a tiny underwhelming after all the System Shock 2 talk at the time.
Hated those Shadows games though. Well, the first one. No thanks.

I've actually finally finished Quantum Break. It's not a long game but other stuff kept getting in the way. Turns out I'd logged out at the last boss, so coming back to it created an unexpected difficulty spike as I'd basically forgotten how to play.
The story is pretty intriguing, and reflecting upon it and reading about, it's actually a rare example of a time-travel narrative that makes sense. Character wise, there's a few interesting characters, played decently by some good actors. It's a Remedy game so that side of thing is done well.
The actual gameplay... is fine. It feels like typical Remedy, run around and shoot stuff seen in Max Payne and Control, but isn't as good. Especially as I played Control before this, this felt like a bit of a regression, the powers just aren't as interesting. But it's passable, and the game does a good job of making the you *feel* powerful as you gain more powers.
Visually it holds up very well too, some nice environments and timey-wimey effects.
I'd give it an 8 out of 10. gameplay is a 7, but everything else drags it up.
(All of that is without mentioning the literal TV episodes that break up the gameplay chapters. They were enjoyable enough, but it was clear that despite some clean looking direction they just didn't have the budget to match the visuals in the game.)

Yakuza 4
This year in January I played Kiwami and got upset. Kiwami, zero, Kiwami 2 and 3 are all solid 10/10 so I was a little disappointed with this. Still amazing and I loved every second, but a mixture of too much yakuza and this not being as good as the rest means it only gets
8/10
Still the greatest series I have ever discovered though.

The Nemesis system sounds so great. And it is exciting. But the moment I killed a captain and he reappeared more or less immediately with more immunities, I have to admit I thought 'I CBA doing this over and over again'.

Psychonauts 2.
9/10
One of the best games I’ve played in the last few years. Full of imaginative ideas, kept me smiling from start to finish.
Surprisingly it also has an excellent story and a wonderful cast of fully voiced characters.
Cannot recommend it enough.

Loved the characters, setting and story but the gameplay was dull for me. Wanted to love it.

The last of us 2 (PS5)
Gameplay really hasn’t evolved from the first one but I still find it enjoyable for the most part. Story beats and tone definitely landed with me, and although I don’t think it’s as touching and memorable as the first game, it definitely does more than enough to justify its existence.

Ghost of Tsushima.
Bought this late last year to play on PS5 when it had the patch to unlock frame rate. Thought it was decent but the open world lull kicked in and I had to take a break from it. Started back on it a couple of months ago and it clicked more this time and was in awe. Knew the end game was coming up story wise so I started doing the side stories and mopping up the collectables with the intent of platinum trophy. Last night I completed it and popped the final trophy to hit platinum. What an amazing looking game with the climactic scene absolutely stunning. Recently upgraded TV to a 55" QLED and the HDR looked sublime on the sunset.
A very high 9/10 rating from me. Cliché to say but it really is the best creed game so far. Gets a point knocked off from being perfect 10/10 purely due to how many collectables there are (the fox dens, hot springs, bamboo cutting stuff).

I got the plat on it but by the end I was really tired of the same tasks over and over.
I don't think I'm going to bother 100% completing these types of games anymore. I almost always get fatigue which ends up giving me a bad impression of the game in its entirety.
