Two plays of Ark Nova in and really enjoying it. It's playing a little long (3hrs for 4 players) but that should come down nicely.

I’ve got that lined up as my next purchase.
Seems to have been coming soon for ages though. I am impatient.

After the Dice Tower review pre orders went through the roof and Capstone couldn't cover the demand. Next printing is underway and due for March

Speaking of running out of space, Middara arrived and it’s gigantic. And heavy. Also these

Answered my own question, the new art, some of the tiles from the river 2 expansion with the new art, and stickers for the meeples which I already have for the original version. Still not en sold on the new art.

Yeah, 20th anniversary edition. I had a copy of the original but it got destroyed from water damage a couple of years back. Figured it was time to get it again.

Inns and cathedrals and traders and builders on their way?

Think Middara may be my perfect dungeon crawl. Stupidly deep branching narrative, solid strategery on the board but not too difficult to understand, very flexible character building (a lot of narrative heavy crawls have very fixed characters to accommodate the story), resettable legacy components, side quests, mini games, variants, the whole shebang.
The only negative so far is the first time setup - it’s one of those games that has its sealed card decks in completely random order (except for the legacy decks), so a good hour of initial time was just separating the cards into the right stacks and punching out the tokens. Ordered an organizer for it as well, while it’s not particularly token heavy like some crawlers, it’s varied so baggies would just make re-setup annoying.

I am at my brothers for a week or two, and forgot to pack any games. There is a great board game shop around the corner, so I think I will treat myself.
What is good solo, and preferably easy to pack up if needed when the kids come running around?
I have Arkham Horror, mansions of madness, eldritch horror, journeys in middle earth, mage Knight, and the marvel and Lord of the rings lcgs already.
I will keep an eye out for gloomhaven, jaws of the line, but anything else recommended? Bonus if 2 players as well, but it is really for me to play between work meetings to destress.

If deck builders and civ games are up your street, Imperium Classics and / or Legends both work really well at 2 and solo. Inexpensive and a tonne of game in each. Plus they can be combined if you end up liking one of them.

Gloomhaven definitely isn’t easy to pack up in a hurry, nor to play when you have a moment in between things.

Looks like they have a choice of Lord of the Rings card game or Terraforming Mars. Touch choice, same price, I know terraforming mars is highly recommended but given how obsessed I am with Arkham Horror more of similar with lotr is very tempting.

Tainted Grail just popped up for me on Amazon. Appears to be an actual retail release rather than someone bulk selling leftovers from Kickstarter. Do I dare, or do I have enough dungeon crawlers to last me until the end of time?

Finished the first few tutorial encounters in Middara, about five hours in total. I breezed through the first two without much of a struggle that lulled me into a false sense of security for the next one, got a couple of turns in before a wee beastie promptly KOed half my party so just legged it to the exit. It’s really good so far, probably the best dungeon crawler I’ve ever played.
But I also caved and ordered Tainted Grail so we’ll see. Just Kingdom Death Monster to go.

I'm genuinely looking forward to you ranking them all. Have you played Sword & Sorcery? That's the one I've been closest to buying.

I'm both impressed at just how many campaign games there are now, and how many of them you have.

Is there any word yet on when the updated Lord of the Rings LCG cycles will be released? I bought the base set a few months ago (must have only been a week or two before they announced the updated one) and have been holding off on getting any more.
The base campaigns are a right pain in the arse solo, but I do really like the game. Keen to get some more.

I have the new set (Ancient Chronicles). The long version short is that I like the engine and the overworld meta, but the game is very unbalanced. Fail forwards-ish but with harsh penalties (you lose a character level, effectively, even if the party is TKOed and you have to restart), and it tries to correct that with a shitton of loot, but that doesn’t really work. I should give it another go sometime with maybe some rule tweaks as I could see a good game in there. It’s also crazy fiddly, probably the most upkeep of any crawler I’ve played, Gloomhaven included.

The new core is out end of the month, so the updated cycles should be a couple of months after that. Summer by the latest, but by the same token this is FFG so it could be “throw a dart at the calendar and hope the ship doesn’t get lost”

I picked it up yesterday and have been playing all of yesterday and today. Depressingly already had the first expansion delivered today (over hill and under hill saga) and eyeing up more. This is going to be like arkham, just silly money I will spend.

I’m still waiting for that to be released in the US. Sometimes supply chain logistics baffle me.

Gremmi, I'd be interested in what dungeon crawler game you think is best. I would love something 1-4 players which allows you to play a D&D / Heroquest sort of game with a campaign. I don't know if such a thing exists. Currently I'm thinking that the Gloomhaven starter kit might be the best bet. That new one you're playing I'm just reading up on, but its staggeringly pricey at the moment.

I’m honestly hesitant to call Gloomhaven a dungeon crawler. It’s a very very good game but it’s more or less a tactical euro puzzler in fantasy clothing, it’s not got much in the way of RPG mechanics or good old dice chucking combat.
It all depends on what you’re looking for, and whether it’s in print or not. Highly thematic pulpy fun? Shadows of Brimstone. Hardcore fantasy RPG? Folklore the Affliction or Swords and Sorcery. Roll dice and have things die? CMON crawlers are generally great for that. Great narrative and JRPG build options? Middara, so far.

Thanks Gremmi. I like rolling dice and things dying, but also fun and narrative.... so I'll buy all of them aside from Gloomhaven. I'll read up the ones you've listed at BGG. Basically I'm after D&D solo I think.
Thanks

If you’re after a true D&D rpg experience solo you can’t go far wrong with an actual TTRPG - Ironsworn is absolutely fantastic. www.ironswornrpg.com/ - takes a touch of imagination and creativity but the emergent narrative can be beyond anything a structured dungeon crawl can bring.

Yeah, aside from the vague fantasy theme, Gloomhaven couldn’t be more different to Heroquest if it tried. It’s more a card-based puzzle game than a classic dungeon crawler.
A lot of modern dungeon crawlers are a lot more complex these days. And a lot more expensive. The beautiful simplicity and £21.99 price point of Heroquest is long gone.
Descent 2nd Edition is still probably the best attempt at modernising Heroquest. It’s a bit less expensive that a lot of the other dungeon crawlers around now too at 60ish quid.
If Star Wars is more your bag, Imperial Assault is basically the same game but Star Wars.
The newer 3rd edition of Descent is superb, but costs a small fortune.
If fantasy isn’t a necessity, Core Space is great. The new version, First Born, is just out and designed for co-op campaign play.
Bit of a dark horse option and I don’t know if it’s actually available or not, but Terminator Rise of the Resistance is a good inexpensive and accessible option too.
Plus, Heroquest exists as an actual thing again and hit retail this very week. It’s around £90 in most places though.

Shout out to Legacy of Dragonholt as well, which is basically a solo / co-op TTRPG meets Choose Your Adventure hybrid and is excellent.

I’m going to mention Mage Knight as well, because it is a staggering amount of content even at modern-day prices, because it is possibly the best single player game out there, and because it is absolutely banging.
