Any themes youβre particularly into, Dougs? Kind of open tbh and happy to give most things a go. Probably less on the fantasy (although did enjoy D&D playthroughs) but happy to give anything a go really. As mentioned, JotL is good. Some non-dungeon crawly stuff Iβve enjoyed solo recently are Dine Imperium, Terraforming Mars Ares Expedition and Imperium Classics / Legends. All are both solo and mp if the family ever takes an interest. If you like Marvel both Legendary and Champions are good solo.

Scythe is a TON of fun and at a much shorter playtime than COIN games.
But the game you really should get is Age of Steam. On sale at the moment from eagle gryphon games.
$80.99
That box and you're set for life.

My attempts to get the family more in to board games aren't going terribly well. Recommendations for solo games for a newbie? Relatively short play time - in theory I could leave it up, but inevitably the cats will destroy it. As a purely solo boardgamer despite my efforts with my daughter & boyfriend...these are the first 20 that come to mind that I've enjoyed. Having had to sell pretty much of my collection, I've now fallen down the print & play rabbithole... - Under Falling Skies
- Warp's Edge
- Proving Grounds
- Tainted Grail (one to leave up, I'm afraid, though it does have a save system)
- Pocket solo games from zadorf.com, especially the Great Escape & Expansion
- Aeon's End
- Arkham Horror: The Card Game
- Eldritch Horror
- Robinson Crusoe
- Elder Sign
- Spirit Island - this is one I've never played but is always recommended to me - not so much a newbie one, though
- Nusfjord
- Bloodborne
- This War of Mine
- Lost Ruins of Arnak
- Gloom/Shadow of Kilforth
- Nemo's War
- Ultra Tiny Epic Galaxies (Other Tiny Epic games are available, most are soloable, this is my favourite)
- Roll Player (with at least Monsters & Minions expansion)/Cartographers
- Dawn of the Zeds

Thoroughly kicked my wife's arse on Ticket to Ride earlier (despite initially not being into it, she's been mulling over how she'll play it again, so it's obviously doing something right). And also had a good game of Labrynth with the kids. So perhaps I was a bit harsh - not that I can see them wanting to play more in depth games.

in terms of the kids, i think you could do much worse than getting this when it comes to retail - i got it from the ks as the creator is on one of the fb groups i frequent and, at that point, i was keen to use it at school for a gaming/rpg club i was planning, but that won't happen now, but i can see the potential for kids to love this, especially the creator tool (you can create your own heroes and monsters by inserting your own photos and drawings - some people have created a whole set of their family - easy to create your own quests for as well)...should be coming to retail soon www.coraquest.com/the advantage being, although it's kid-centric, there's a solid adventure game system in place that puts a host of other games i've played to shame, so it's not just a 'kids' game

Can really recommend Merchants of the Dark Road. Itβs a pick up and deliver game that feels like a lighter version of a Lacerda with the volume of choices going on and the game flow. Itβs got a really interesting scoring system, you have prestige points, which are public knowledge, and money, which is hidden, and your final score is whichever is lowest + any extra VP points from other cards, so you canβt really tell how well other players are doing, but also have to balance decisions - will delivering something for prestige matter if the goods to do it cost too much, etc. Comes with a solo mode that has beat your score, beat the bot, and a campaign with branching missions. Very high production values, especially in the deluxe edition.

While obviously not as Gucci as the deluxe, is there much of a text barrier for entry?

So whoβs going all in on the Marvel Zombicide pledge? Only close to 500 quid if you want it at the same time as retail, what a bargain.

Kickstarter's are too expensive for me nowadays (hell most of the big games are now). I'm mainly drawn to the smaller games now.
When's the first KS to have a 1k pledge going to happen?

Looks like the original had a few $1k plus pledges too but they were of the βBE IN THE GAME, MEET THE STAFFβ vein.

While obviously not as Gucci as the deluxe, is there much of a text barrier for entry? Pardon for the superlate reply. Is it Scythe or Age of Steam you're looking to buy? Age of Steam only has one area where text matters (once you learn the rules) and that is for the rulebreaking bonus effects that players bid for at the start of each round. (OK, that's not exactly how it happens but for breivitys sake I've shortened the process a bit) There are .. eight of them .. I think. First Move, First Build, Engineer, Loco, Urbanization, Goods Growth and Free pass. Did I miss one? Jeez, at this pace I could have just explained the entire rules set... ANYWAY. The name of those, and sometimes what they do, are printed on a board. You could just learn the Dutch names and have a reference sheet printed out. The rest is language independent. As for Scythe there are a bunch of event cards that have VERY brief event descriptions, and somewhat longer resolutoin alternatives written on them. Would personally not want them in a language I couldn't read.

It's at times like these I'm glad that Marvel + Zomicide + Buckets of plastic have no pull on me what so ever. Well maybe Buckets of Plastic, but not at that price.
