I may or may not have just ordered a copy of Middara. A 20lb dungeon crawler with a 500 page campaign book.

That’s Kingdom Death Monster. A fantastic, detailed, engaging world with a thoroughly embarrassing hentai art style. I’ve had the opportunity to buy KDM but decided having it on the table would just be too cringeworthy.
Middara is more generic JRPG-ish.

I wish I had a group (and the time mostly) to go on a big dungeon crawl.
My friend has backed Frosthaven so whenever that shows up I'll get a few games of that in.
I've always liked the idea of a dungeon crawl, and I have fond memories of Hero Quest. Just need the time. Or if I had somewhere to keep it set up so that I could do it solo.

Anyone interested in doing some playtesting? I've been making a few games (mostly card based) and obviously with the pandemic I've been struggling to go out and get anyone to try them in their latest state. I've got P&P files that people can print out. I don't want to clutter this thread with it all if people are interested, just wanting to gauge interest. I'd be interested when I've got the time. Kids might like playing.

Kids might like playing. Count me in too. I'd happily help put some testing prototypes together in Tabletop Simulator, if that would help? Stuff that is mainly card based shouldn't take too long to create, providing you don't need massive amounts of scripting doing, and even then I'd probably do it, as I have a strange love/hate relationship with scripting in Tabletop Simulator. I've got a bunch of some finished, but mostly half-finished designs up on the workshop. Can post links, if anyone's interested. Have had a few publisher-related setbacks in the last few weeks, so my enthusiasm for designing is a bit shot at the moment. Happy to play test, though

quitsking tincanrocket Sorry guys I completely missed this! I've suddenly become a lot busier in the last few days but I'll try to put some files up soon. Thanks. tincanrocket I think I've uploaded Portobello Road (the card game) on to Tabletop Simulator but I'd be happy for someone who has more experience with it give it a try as well Happy to have a look at your works too.

Here is the latest iteration of Portobello Road. It's a tableau building card game about setting up market stalls in Lahndan town, trying to sell stuff to customers and making the most money. Setting up certain stalls and hiring staff gives you advantages that help you and can make you more money. There are also one time action cards that can affect you or your opponents, but you have to be careful with some of the dodgy cards cos if the Warden catches you it won't end well. It's a self contained card game that you can shuffle, deal the cards and get playing a game straight away, no other set up required. The cardsThe rulebookBelow is what the first page of the rulebook looks like

Nice! I've got a busy day or two ahead, but quieter towards the end of the week, so will take a little stroll down Portobello Road then, all being well

Just read through the rulebook, cubby, and you've done a very good job of explaining of the game works - I even understood it without the need of Rodney Smith's help, which is seldom the case with games these days! My plan for later is to either print out a copy, or to throw a version together in TTS - will report back on progress.
We have the anniversary session of the old EG Boardgamers Discord gang tonight. Crazy to think that it's been 12 months - it has sort of flown by, but the weekly get together also seems like an age-old tradition at the same time.

Thanks my biggest annoyance is unclear rules so I spend a lot of effort trying to make things as clear as I can. It really helps me design. What's this discord?

The Euro Gamers (plus other genres) channel, which contains a bunch of exiles from the old EG boardgames thread. Here's an invite link: discord.gg/AMCu8Fpm It's a pretty busy forum these days, and we do a live game on Wednesdays each week, plus a bunch of async games at other times. Tonight marks 1 year since we all put aside our social awkwardness and met up online

The prepaints look pretty damn good from here! The only prepaints I've got are Claustrophobia, but those look like a level above that.

Nice figurines Grem So, if I was to drop $60-80 on a game that needed the following, what would I pick: a) tried and tested - not just some KS model fest with paper thin rules. b) replayable, as in the narrative written aspects should be pushed far into the background (show don’t tell, let the game speak for itself) c) euro-ish but I don’t mind some luck. I’d probably go for a wargame thinking about it, not sure about Undaunted though. What should I go for? Currently both Mage Knight Ultimate and Scythe look like bargains, that should give you an idea of the kind of range I’m looking at. Edit: I’ve played Terra Mystica to death, Gaia Project felt somehow too ‘loose’ compared to it. I dunno.

If you’re after a euro-ish war game, the COIN series might be your friend. There’s a whole range of settings / periods now, so pick your poison. Asymmetrical factions, resource management, cool action selection mechanism married to a historical event deck.
And as you mentioned Undaunted, I will never miss an opportunity to profess my love for Combat Commander, the bestest card-driven, emergently narrative tactics game around.

Yeah I was intrigued by the Colombia COIN game, I must admit.
Not heard of that other game, I’ll have a look. Thanks!

My attempts to get the family more in to board games aren't going terribly well. Recommendations for solo games for a newbie? Relatively short play time - in theory I could leave it up, but inevitably the cats will destroy it.

I'm considering that gloomhaven new game for that reason Doug's. I'm wondering if I start playing it, then others might want to join in other scenarios. Still a lot of money for a maybe though.

Any themes you’re particularly into, Dougs? Kind of open tbh and happy to give most things a go. Probably less on the fantasy (although did enjoy D&D playthroughs) but happy to give anything a go really.

Under Falling Skies might be a good place to start Dougs? You can get a PnP version if you’re feeling especially skint. Derp Space D6 is good too, but not great - bit swingy for me.
If you go heavier, Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion can be had for medium money.

On the wargaming front, anything GMT, especially anything COIN as mentioned but I’ll also throw in a recommendation for some of the DVG games, especially the Leader series. They are a little more luck based but have emergent narrative out the wazoo. Other than that, if you want a more pure euro experience, anything Uwe, although outside of AFfO , there’s no real emergent narrative to speak of, unless you mentally picture people plowing fields and going to the market as narrative. There’s also Robinson Crusoe to consider. Euroish elements with a luck component, a light starting narrative for each scenario but then you’re left to your own devices. It’s absolutely rock hard though, you’ll have a big loss to win ratio. The newer version out soon is supposedly a smoother ride, at least as far as learning the game and having easier scenarios in the box.
