I really enjoyed 3. I think both it and Unity were unfairly trashed when they released, but I'm glad they've had a small resurgence in recent years.
I've been wanting to replay it lately after watching Reservation Dogs and Prey. Your post might just be the catalyst for me to do it.

Boston might be my favorite city in the franchise. It just feels so much more real and fun to run around than the rest, even if I didn't bother doing any icon hunting. With the big caveat that I haven't had to parkour around Paris yet in Unity.

Good thing you're great at ignoring icons, because Unity... ahhhhh
It does have some cool side missions though. It started some of the detective quests that Origins was praised for. But fuck, that map is icon diarrhea. But Paris is definitely a great city to explore, and the parkour there is the best in the series.

Got Back Flag/Rogue on sale for the Switch. Never played and Assassin's Creed game before. I'll let you all know what I think when I get around to playing it in about five years.

I had a go on Unity yesterday and it still has that AC janky input sometimes (Arno, can you please just lightly step off a balcony rail without walking into the wall or doing a trapeze artist drop and catch before climbing up again??) and the story isn't the best, but it's good to play and the map has icon filters. Could do with a 60fps patch but for an 8 year old game, it does not do badly at all.

I know no one gives a shit but I’ll narrate my run through the main series line regardless. I polished off 4 last night, a game I’ve replayed about 5 times and only ever got up to sequence 4 or 5 before getting distracted by something else. Like almost all of the other games, the final third feels ridiculously rushed. Getting the rope dart approximately five minutes before the end was weird, and the last major mission being the longest trail mission on the game was annoying. But nearly fully upgrading the jackdaw and blasting the fuck out of everything with near impunity never got old.
Also - there’s a bunch of gameplay mechanics that are just assumed to be learned from AC3 and aren’t covered in any tutorial or training. How to properly climb trees, how kill streaks work, how to manually reload, etc etc. Nothing gamebreaking but definitely made this play through a lot more straightforward.

I think I stopped AC4 just before the end, I just got too absorbed into the ship combat and never went back to land. They never really captured the thrill of that part of the game in future installments. I'm not playing Skull and Bones because that really looks like a game that's been reheated too many times.

still trying to finish Odyssey at moment*, last one I played was black flag (and before that only the first one), and odyssey ship combat remains fun but - is my memory faulty here? - I think AC4s was slightly more involved, wind direction and weather played more of a part didn't it?
* please end, please for the love of zeus end, i'm sure the reason I've not found sisyphus yet is because the player is sisyphus

You get peoples names wrong too. Finished Odyssey recently, 200 hours with no grinding and still a ton of ? to investigate, absolutely loved it. These aren't games in the sense of have-to-acquire-and-apply-skills to complete, but as glorious world simulators (and in the case of Kassandra, a glorious protagonist too) to just run around in and enjoy, and occasionally brutally murder everyone in sight, can't be beat. Every single vista is stunning. Origins now, playing in chronological order by setting, and because it got the fps boost last. Not quite as glorious, but close enough.

Nice:
Not a fan of the way the texture mod changed the look of the courtyard stones at Masyaf and a few other things, but it's a decent enough effort that made me consider re-installing AC1 for the first time in ages.

Doesn’t bode well that I can’t tell which side is the modded version.

Probably. Not sure the brightly lit colors work for the theme though, it just looks like someone stuck on reshade and went wild with the saturation.

Doesn’t bode well that I can’t tell which side is the modded version. Yeah it took me a while to really see which one was the modded side. I would hope the real remaster or remake is instantly recognisable.

I’ve been playing the Wrath of the druids Dlc for Valhalla and I’ve been really enjoying it. I think previous Dlc for the newer games have been a bit meh but this has hit the sweet spot for me. It is the main game condensed down into a smaller package but in some ways it highlights that underneath the bloat of the main game there some solid systems in here and improves on them too. The resource settlement upgrading as a nice loop to it and it’s better thought out. Ireland looks great, combat is a lot of fun and in general the writing and characters give it some life too. Probably the most I’ve enjoyed the series since origins (despite generally liking Oydessy and Valhalla with reservations).

Wrath of the Druids probably the best section of Valhalla in general. The sections in the game are structured the same but at least Druids had interesting characters. I felt it was long enough with plenty of content within too. It's just that the rest of the game is broken in sections that last just as long that it wears out its welcome. Even the Paris DLC falls flat in comparison.

Ubisoft slamming that emergency button repeatedly as they go all in and reveal they're working on 4 Assassins Creed games. As in, 4 additional games to Mirage, Jade, Red and Hexe insider-gaming.com/assassins-creed-all-in/

Restarted the remastered version of 3 this afternoon. Disappointingly, there are still bugs present in it from the original version that will apparently never be fixed.

Things I had completely forgotten about AC3 until this week:
- The modern day missions, like the Brazil one.
- Every one of the homesteaders and their stories.
- The entire prison sequence.
- Daniel Cross.

I gave Odyssey a quick look a couple of months ago, probably need to actually give it more time, given it seems to be better rated. But tried Origins and, ten hours or so in, I still really feel like I’m playing a 10-15 year old game. Just don’t know how Ubisoft manage to repeatedly sell these games with shit movement, shit fighting and clunky smashed together jarring world stuff. The combat is a-fucking-trocious having just come from Elden Ring and, mid (shit) fight, characters are commenting on the weather. They have just never got all of their game systems to line up have they? It’s not Bethesda level of clunk, and I get it- it’s predictable easy gaming, but it ain’t far off and, considering how many iterations they are in its absolute poop.

I gave Odyssey quite a decent chance. It's as shit as the rest of them.
