It's a game. With a lot of fiction. Based on a reality where there are two groups of opposing factions who have shaped history behind the scenes. Using ancient technology. In one of the games, AC2 to be exact the main character fought the Pope. I also remember a Native American, AC3 to be exact, who was involved in pivotal moments in American history. Anyway what were you saying about absurd and iffy things? That its absurd to have foreigners shape your country history even in fictional setting but based on reality. If the set the game in eastern Europe and put frigging British as a main character I would not like it. and we had them during parts of our history.

It's sad that we have to have this conversation but go ahead. I imagine you felt the same when the series had an Italian man shape the history of Constantinople?
Anyway maybe we should tell Japan to stop putting non Japanese people in their games. Kojima a Japanese man putting his American character Big Boss in the USSR and having him shape the history of it was outrageous!

Cool, wait until you find out a Native American didn’t fight side by side with George Washington and then find a magical alien artifact that gave them visions of Washington becoming the tyrannical king of America

*quietly shelves talk about how Kassandra shouldn't have had nearly the same gameplay as Alexios if we're worried about historical accuracy*
Besides, hasn't it been hinted that Yasuke will have trouble with "social" stealth as well (which I can only assume means increased suspicion in cutscenes and gameplay, potentially being locked out from certain areas etc) compared to Naoe, and not just being less stealthy because he's a samurai and she's a shinobi? Maybe those very concerns about him not being Japanese are touched upon in the game

It looks interesting but Valhalla was sooo Ubisoft i just don't think i can stand another bloated and boring AC game.
Am hoping by saying that publicly the universe will make the game turn out brilliant, just to make me look stupid/wrong.
Hope so, then we can all enjoy it

Maybe those very concerns about him not being Japanese are touched upon in the game It is interesting, I do wonder how they'd approach it. With all these Yasuke experts coming out there was some interesting details about him being a retainer to Nobunaga and thus having a higher status compared to most Japanese people. They could potentially use that angle as a means of just excusing NPC behaviour to treat him as any other person. The fact there's two protaganists, one someone native to the country and one an outsider being brought up into the culture, could be an interesting story dynamic if they chose to. But I haven't been bowled over by AC story lately and supposedly the writers for this did Odyssey which, I couldn't even tell you most of what happens in that game. They do Yasuke will be the more combat heavy character so maybe he will be not as stealthy.

I imagine the response from the general public will be along the lines of "I have never heard of Yasuke and even if I had I wouldn't care, I just want to stab people to death".
That's certainly where I stand anyway.

High time someone burned all copies of Shogun and canceled the TV series. Would you enjoy a remake of Shogun as Assasin Creed with Adams instead jumping on roofs and slaughtering locals left and right with legendary katana stolen from a grave? And mention of native americans in America as being comparable really shows lack of understanding. It's just a game. You like it, good for you, enjoy it and hope it lives up to the hype. Don't need to get upset because someone disagrees with the choice taken by the devs. People are allowed not to like stuff you like.

Would you enjoy a remake of Shogun as Assasin Creed with Adams instead jumping on roofs and slaughtering locals left and right with legendary katana stolen from a grave? Yes, just like I and many others did when the game was an action RPG called Nioh. I don't remember seeing nearly as much outrage about the other foreigner protagonist back then, either... Yeah, because Connor/Ratonhnhaké:ton, that member of a marginalized (at the time and place) group fighting alongside famous and celebrated people and making a major mark in AC's version of history is completely different from *checks notes* Yasuke, this member of a marginalized (at the time and place) group fighting alongside famous and celebrated people and making a major mark in AC's version of history... Or, again, Kassandra having the exact same gameplay as Alexios (and even being the canon protagonist, so you can't argue that they wrote the game around a man and then tossed her in, in fact literally the opposite happened because some idiot in management was afraid she wouldn't sell) in a setting where the historical and strictly enforced gender rules would mean it wouldn't even be close... AC has always taken liberties with its "historical accuracy" for the sake of gameplay, it's only just now that it's become such a major problem? I wonder why /s Correct, and in fact there is an actual legitimate complaint that, if they're going with actual historical people this time rather than fictional characters that "were there, shaped history", as it were, Yasuke didn't actually do that much historically, there's debate around whether he was even given the title of samurai, there's like a hundred native Japanese men of that time period they could have chosen for the male protagonist instead etc etc. But don't act like a good majority of the complaints aren't coming from ill-informed and/or racist people focusing only on that one specific aspect of Yasuke's skin color (or even denying his historical existence) and nothing else...

If you want an idea of the mindset of the most critical voices against this, they're now leading a targeted hate campaign against one of the writers for her involvement and over her weight.
It is interesting because I remember Ghost of Tsushima also having an outcry over it because of historical accuracy (like katanas not being invented at the time GoT takes place, right down to bird sounds used in the game which are not native to the island). The other interesting one being that a Western studio should not be allowed to tell this kind of story and it should only come from the Japanese. Which is just an insane way of thinking. Yet here we are seeing the same argument.

Jesus wept. Even if I found something in this to take offence to, my mindset would simply be to just not buy the game and ignore any press about it.

Funny, I saw outcry about katanas this time too, except it was more like "katanas in that time weren't used for combat, they were only a status symbol, other weapons were used instead" (those also exist in the game, btw), " how dare they reeee-"... Even if that's true (and it very well could be!), where the hell were these complaints when damn near every piece of media set in those time periods, including the Japan-made ones, featured katanas all over the place because they're so iconic at this point? Surely there's enough legitimate grievances that can be levelled against Ubisoft games without having to resort to crap like that??

The Ghost of Tsushima anachronism and historical inaccuracy outrage was pretty funny, it was a massive success in Japan so doesn't appear to have really upset anyone.
Choosing a real historical figure to have as one of the protagonists in Assassin's Creed is an unusual step but given then historical figure is a pretty unusual one it's not surprising they picked him. It's a series where humanity was created on the planet by ancient aliens, as mentioned earlier one of the enemies you fight was a real pope, a massive conspiracy of two dodgy organisations have been fighting for centuries somehow hidden from everyone, people live the past through genetic memories and someone actually thought Connor was an interesting character.
Anyone taking this incredibly daft series seriously should take a step back and just try and enjoy seeing recreations of the past, even if they're not completely accurate.

The points you raise have absolutely nothing to do with gameplay. They're either marketing or narrative fiction reasons. As you point out, the gameplay remains the same regardless of the choices.

Exactly. Reading that writers from that country/region should be the only ones to write about it was a real "laughs in Shakespeare" moment. Hell even Shogun was written by James Clavell, who was British. The Ghost of Tsushima anachronism and historical inaccuracy outrage was pretty funny, it was a massive success in Japan so doesn't appear to have really upset anyone Came out to critical acclaim in Japan and the mayor of Tsushima even made the game director an honorary citizen for their part in driving visitors to the island.

Can I stab people? Can I fast forward through the conversations to get back to stabbing people? Can I collect shit? Is there a lot of stabbing? Is it any good?
These are the only questions I care about.
It's not like you need to buy it anyway, just grab a month of U+ to rinse it and then grab the ultimate edition when it inevitably goes on sale to mop up the dlc.
