It was actually more the philosophizing monologue dumps rather than the visuals. It just felt so... high school edgelord to me.
But you're right, we always have the same debates on this site. Your avatar is a pretty accurate representation of us.

I think I'd lost interest in the franchise by the end of Brosnan's stint, to be honest; however, I stand by my assertion that Dalton was better than Connery, Moore, Lazenby, and Brosnan. I like you, but this is a terrible take. Yes, they're dated but Dalton was Midsomer Murders Bond.

The first Matrix had a bit of the "I did a first-year philosophy subject" about it, but for me it didn't really get in the way of enjoying it.
The sequel, on the other hand...

There was another film release around about the same time called Dark City which had exactly the same sort of themes which I think might have aged a lot better. Remember preferring it at the time (saw it after the Matrix).

I like you too.
When it comes to Bond, though, I fear we may have to agree to disagree!
I will say that the gap between Dalton and Connery isn't particularly wide in my view, with both of them being light-years ahead of Moore (and to be honest, I can't even remember poor ol' Lazenby); however, The Living Daylights and (in particular) Licence to Kill are the two Bond films that stand out most of all when I think back on them, albeit many years after the fact.
I liked the edge (for want of a better term!) that Dalton brought to the role, I guess.
I've only read a handful of Fleming's books - and if anything, that pre-dated my interest in the films, so it was forever ago - but my recollection is that Dalton's portrayal was closer to Bond's original characterisation then the Connery and Moore movies, which I appreciated.
As for The Matrix, I haven't seen it since it was originally out at the cinema; now I'm not sure I'd want to revisit it, having read the last few posts in this thread!

It doesn't really have much in common with The Matrix though, aside from a general "what if our world wasn't real" theme.

I like Dark City, but I find I can't fully enjoy it because there is something a bit off about Rufus Sewell. In a "He was a replicant all along" kinda way. Like his face just doesn't quite fit his skull properly.

Whenever someone starts blathering about living in the Matrix and about red pills etc., I can't help but think the Wachowskis have a lot to answer for. The worst thing about it was the sunglasses though, my God they look so dumb

It is darkly ironic that the red pill/blue pill movie was made by probably the most outspokenly progressive/woke filmmakers in the industry. It's not really their fault, though.

It's driven by those who think - wrongly - that intelligence equates to 'seeing the true nature of reality'. Morons that essentially think believing in conspiracies is a short cut to being smart.

I'll be your friend, forum user Danno! I have no strong thoughts on eggplant, one way or the other; I don't mind spaghetti, but would always take pappardelle and tagliatelle if given a choice; I'm assuming Danno meant it should've been aubergine, not eggplant. Blame our Americanised mod for that one. I tend to watch so many American cooking shows that I'm numb to that sort of thing by now. I've nearly put "cilantro" on our shopping list a few times. Calling spaghetti "noodles" can fuck right off, though.

Caveat: I haven't seen any of the Daniel Craig films. And no need to start now I would add, perhaps the next shit actor playing Bond will be ok.

Doesn't necessarily have to be a bloke.
In keeping with the thread title, a female bond could be pretty cool if done right.

Young male protagonist gets the feeling that something is "off", discovers that reality is is creation of a hidden, powerful group of others, acquires power that combats them and ends with a new understanding of reality and freed from the chains that previously shackled him. Yeah, nothing in common at all

I watched The Matrix again recently, ahead of 4, and was surprised and how great it was. Thought it held up fantastically and still oozed cool. Then again, I would have been just entering my teens when it originally came out, so my idea of cool is probably skewed.
And if you think the philosophising in 1 was bad, don't go near 2.
2 and 3 were worse than I remembered, particularly 2. My unpopular Matrix opinion is probably that 3 is slightly more watchable than 2. It is an average sci-fi war film, for the most part. Not that it is a good sci-fi war film, of course.
Also, I grew up with lots Moore Bond on the telly, so I have a soft spot for him. Craig is probably objectively the best though. Dalton isn't bad, but his films are rubbish (and Lazenby is a bit rubbish, but the film is great).

Them that know will remember every other 'dark' D&B tune of the era sampled Dark City. It had a really good score and was absolutely chock full of deep sounding soundbites.
I keep telling my mates who still produce that the time is right for a Dark City revival.

I've never actually watched it, keep meaning to. Am I right in thinking the Director's Cut is a lot better?

Yeah, they hacked the shit out of it to get it to just over 90m. In the era of 3hr movies dropping with gay abandon, its weird to think they were so desperate to get it shorter for theatrical release but they did all the 'cut scenes, replace with voiceover' stuff and removed a ton of cool background stuff.

Dark City is in my top list too but my recent rewatch of Highlander was indeed a sickener. Childhood glorious memories trashed.

Bloody love Dark City. Last time I saw it, it was the director's cut, but I couldn't say how it was different as even that was ages ago.

Yeah, they hacked the shit out of it to get it to just over 90m. That's just a studio that's worried a film isn't going to have legs and want to get as many showings per screen as possible in the first week. It's a completely cynical decision.

Ah, man. You dont seem to be able to (legally) stream the directors cut anywhere. Everywhere just has the theatrical cut, unless its a very well hidden apple extra.

Yeah. If you buy Aliens on itunes, it gives you the DC as an iTunes extra and you can buy Blade Runner: TFC as its own movie for example.

Aubergines in the UK are shit. Just bitter, spiteful things that will key your car as they roll past.
