I used to like Mitch Hedberg.
I still do, but I used to, too.

Now that's one comic almost guaranteed to not get into culture war bullshit. Though I guess we'll never know

I used to really like Billy Connolly, though wonder if some of his stuff might be problematic now. Nothing in particular comes to mind, just a general sense. I (re)watched a fair bit of his stuff a couple of years ago and it was all fine. Much like Dave Allen, he's just a funny, funny man that doesn't need a victim to make you laugh at something ridiculous, despite the era they inhabited.

IIRC, wasn't the main complaint against Connolly that he used to swear a lot? Oh noes.

My girlfriend thinks Michael McIntyre is absolutely hilarious. Don't think I'll ever understand his appeal... Fuck Michael McIntyre he’s one of the single most irritating life forms on the planet, ranking alongside ticks, mosquitoes and botflies.

Thing with is that he is so completely inoffensive you could take your gran to see him, and the well trodden style of observational comedy is easy to relate to. Hence the success.
Whever I see a stand-up live, it's amazing how often they take the piss out of MM. He's seems to be the go to guy when standups need another standup to be the butt of their joke.

Stewart Lee was my absolute idol, saw him live so many times. His recent stuff is too much like jazz fusion for me now. He's got into a rut where every routine has to descend into repetitiveness. Does the repetition make you feel Ang Lee?

Always crinkled up in your pocket. Hilarious.

I don't disagree that he's inoffensive, but he's just not very funny. it's like how Ed Sheeran has become popular. He's just inoffensive and bland, so the the "entire family" can enjoy him. But it's so utterly devoid of any personality it's just dull.

Lizard - I'm not even sure if that's something you've just made up or a genuine MM bit.

I enjoy Milton Jones, because his inoffensive one-liners make my mum laugh without me having to explain anything he's referencing.

He's the fucking GOAT, I saw him almost 30 years ago and nearly died with laughter. An immense, immense talent and possibly the most influential comedian from the UK.

At the risk of getting into the weeds I'd argue Chic Murray is the most influential UK stand up. Great absurdist one liners decades before anyone else.

Uh, I think the Pope at the time may have felt victimised by Dave Allen's relentless harpooning. Poor Pope Paul VI.

Whilst not a fan, it's massively unfair really. His routines are generic and accessible, and as you say, that's the reason for his success. All ages from kids to your gran can watch him and there's no concerns about an F or C bomb. I can watch him on whatever show he's hosting and the odd thing makes me smile but wouldn't be my go to for stand up.

Going back a few pages to combine a couple of unpopular opinions, I saw Noel Fielding doing standup a few years ago and he was rubbish. I’m not a huge fan anyway but he was genuinely quite bad at it.

He got very big very quickly without 'paying his dues' in the comedy clubs so I suspect some of the flak he gets from other comedians is down to envy.

Ah, I can see why they might be annoyed then. The comedy circuit is hard graft by the sounds of it. Still, thems the breaks I guess.

He’s as middle of the road as you can get, hence him always getting work on BBC Saturday evenings. He’s basically early nineties a Michael Barrymore but without being interesting enough to have someone bummed to death in his pool.
