Radiohead are shit and always have been.
There is good music still coming out, for instance Sabaton are great.
And anyone complain that old music was pure and new music is fake has forgotten the legends that were Milli Vanilli.

My Dad was all AC/DC, Jethro Tull, Queen, Led Zep, Pink Floyd and had a big stack of vinyl but I always considered it Dad music my Mum was into all that old 60's happy stuff, pre Beatles and was a Elvis fan. I rejected it then but started appreciating it years later. Plus we all can agree Bat Out of Hell is one of the best albums ever made. Dad Rock, or in my family Parent Rock, is an excellent genre. Though in my family it's Queen, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Meatloaf, Dire Straits, Joan Armatrading, King Crimson, Wishbone Ash. The specifics always change, it just has to be reminiscent of long car journeys and ale. I was raised on a diet of Hendrix, led zep, deep purple, the doors, vanilla fudge, cream, james gang, Neil young and the eagles by my dad who was in bands when I was young. He also taught me guitar at an early age. Basically I was perfectly prepped for college and all the joys and excess that brought you in 1991 😊

It took until my teens before my parents started playing the stuff (which was mostly because they hated Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden which were the only albums I had), but Led Zep, some Queen, Floyd, Sabbath, The Who* and (at the insistence of my uncle, who was the uncle everyone wants since he took me to a biker rally at 14 y.o., got me drunkish and I saw naked tits on a stage) Iron Maiden, The Clash and The Damned. *I hate The Who and yet anyone that talks to me about music for more than 5minutes finds that hard to believe

I’m fairly indifferent to The Who’s music, but they’re fronted by a paedo and a hardcore Brexiter so are fairly easy to hate.

There probably is great new music coming out. I just do t have the time to find it anymore.
You can craft the finest algorithm but getting the next great sonic obsession in your ear is always a challenge.

Nah, it absolutely isn’t. Spotify is amazing at suggesting new music after you’ve used it for a bit.

Nah, it absolutely isn’t. Spotify is amazing at suggesting new music after you’ve used it for a bit. Yeeeeah I dunno. Maybe it’s because I just don’t have a clear idea of what music it is I actually like, but I can listen to Spotify recommendations all year long and I’ll only get a handful of new artists I’m actually interested in. I guess I’m just difficult.

I suppose it depends what you listen to. If you listen to nothing but classic rock, yes, you probably won’t get any new music. But I do have reasonably eclectic tastes and my release radar usually has something good on it.

I stand by it. They managed to be MOR when the 60s were dragging to a close and the 70s was gearing up with Bowie, prog, the birth of metal, the MC5 and all of punk. Fuck em.

Awwww man I saw Chai before all the lockdown bullshit happened. I just got them and Baxter Dury off listening to the radio though, old school.

I'm not even sure how I find out about new stuff I like. Bandcamp seems to be interesting, just poke around there. Or I'll check out various album of the year type threads. Or I might come across an article whilst I'm poking around somewhere and it sounds interesting. Or I might see a band I like has been involved with a different band or project, or mentions them in an interview so I'll give it a go.
Invariably the stuff I discover doesn't do much for me, but occasionally I like it a lot.
I just don't use Spotify at all. The adverts annoy me too much and the lack of most functionality using the free app is annoying. And the sub feels like too much. I'd rather buy stuff off Bandcamp.
I probably spend more per year than I would with a Spotify sub, but would rather do that.
I've also got a general distrust of algorithm based suggestions as it reminds me about just how much data companies hold about me.

It’s always been a bit like finding a needle in a haystack for me. It’s just that I used to have every weekend free to head down to Beanos in Croydon and flick through LPs. Then it was every other weekend. Now I'm lucky if I can find half an hour a week in which to get funky.

Everybody should dig out the maggot brain album and just go and put it on and reset. Maggot brain is always the answer.

Four floors of bliss and my first taste of a chocolate peanut butter milkshake to boot. Closest place Ive found since they closed (other than Rough Trade)is the record shop attached to Fighting Cocks in Kingston

Twitch was on fire during the lockdowns for dj's and music. A lot of the new music was discovered and then promptly forgotten.

Spotify suggestions changed my musical life. I have never listened to the radio really, and have been more into club / electronic music nights than gigs.
Spotify used to be a better I think - there was a "music we think you might like" section, which sometimes was a bit weird, but I found so many awesome different albums. There is still a "music like artist X that you like" but it isn't as good.
I mainly use the "new releases for you section" now and I can get new music every week pretty much.
The way I can go through a new music rabbit hole jumping from album to artist playlist, to featured on, to remixes, to guest artist, etc. I'll always find something, maybe a whole album to add to my favourites.
And I can still learn and find music of any style from any decade on there. Maybe some blues, or some alternative folk music for when guests are over.

I think everyone has (at least) one band/artist they feel they should like - and maybe want to - but don't, for whatever reason.
The Who fit the bill for me, but my main one's probably The Velvet Underground. Just never clicked.

The Who was the first gig I ever went to at the NEC (or possibly Kylie, I forget the ordering, could also have been Joan Armatrading). Velvet Underground are mint though.
I've never really found Spotify/Other algorithms work as well as radio DJs. They tend to just do sonically similar things and you rarely get much surprising or if you do it is of the effect of "Oh is this a B-Side by other band I like", there's no real juxtaposition. They never seem to do time shifts either. Like if you're listening to some modern heavier rock it's never going to throw in Helter Skelter even if its similar, as the 50 year gap isn't a good enough statistical match.

Who said Pearl Jam and when did you stop listening to them?
Loved them so much but I couldn't tell you what their last 5 albums are.

As fan of some extreme and black metal I think I should like Behemoth as everyone else in these circles seems to but it's never really clicked for me.
Perhaps a different thing, but I really want to like the Avant-Garde black metal / jazz band Imperial Triumphant as I like their art deco aesthetic on their album covers and stage outfits. I just find them pretty unlistenable.

Don't get me wrong - I like the odd song here and there (Sweet Jane and Heroin, plus those you mention, for example), but for how revolutionary/influential/ground-breaking/etc. they were, I just can't muster a commensurate level of appreciation.
I'd rather listen to the Velvets than The Who, but that's 'cause the former influenced more bands I really like than the latter did.
