I like them quite a lot. Though they do only have 4 songs put so seems a bit harsh to judge them as a band yet.

I listen to loads of new bands. Admittedly they normally sounds like bands from the 60s, 70s or 90s. But at least they are modern 😊

Timely enough, I’d never actually listened to a Radiohead album all the way though until last year. I figured it was probably about time and listened to ok computer, kid A and in rainbows. They are alright. I preferred the computer one because it’s songs have a good beat you can dance to. Oh, and I listened to all guns and roses albums in a working day last week. Use Your Illusion could be a great album if they were merged and the 20 beta versions of you could be mine were taken out. But my main takeaway is that if they didn’t know know so many fast, dangerous women, they would have about three songs. All about heroin. And that concludes my review of old music. Should have listened to the bends.

Hail to the Thief too, especially if he wanted danceable songs.

My wife loves Reggaeton. LOVES. I honestly should give more of it a chance. I even speak Spanish so I have no excuse not to. I don't know if that's hell for you though, living with it. Nah, I'm OK with it, beyond only speaking limited Spanish. Some of it is quite catchy, some less so. 😁

About 90% of the songs on my regular playlist are from the 90s or earlier. Definitely agree that streaming/ease of access to digital music have watered down the quality a lot. It's still out there, but you really have to search for it among the dross. Had to laugh earlier when I read that Wet Leg are apparently the hottest band of 2022 (admittedly it was just the Grauniad saying so) 'Chaise Longue' is kind of catchy, but I really despair if this is an act worth celebrating... Yeah, we had quality stuff like this in the 90s

Music died in 2006, when TOTP was cancelled.
Despite having bought loads of new music last year ¬_¬

I googled Wet Leg and found that Grauniad article. Gave them a listen. Maybe not exactly similar, but something about the bass and guitar tone of Wet leg made think of LCD Soundsystem, and I realised about halfway through the video that I would much rather be listening to LCD Soundsystem.
To be fair I can imagine Wet Leg finding an audience amongst the Guardian's core readership of middleclass folks who want to appear trendy and cool.
I do actually end up listening to fairly new stuff most of the time, and only go back to the "classics" every so often.

A big part of why older music was ‘better’ is that we’ve spent 20+ years listening to those songs and bands/artists. There’s a degree of nostalgia and familiarity which you’ll never get with anything new, without spending ages listening to it on repeat.

There’s something slightly irritating about 20 year olds moaning about the world, or singing about love etc. when they are half our age.

Good discussion this. I think there comes a time where you are comfortable just listening to shit you liked when you were younger. Generally, it's no surprise that most of us like stuff we liked when music was A Big Thing in our lives. We're not supposed to like new music. Our parents didn't, regardless of their generation. If they said they liked the stuff you listened to your in your teens and early 20s, they were mostly lying.

Tbf, at this point, I reckon 20 year olds are allowed a whinge at the state of the world.

I still really like new music, I just miss old music culture which is a different thing. I do actually end up listening to fairly new stuff most of the time, and only go back to the "classics" every so often. Charitably I imagine the Guardian person is going "oh hey they're like less musically interesting LCD Soundsystem, but their lyrics are better", though your mileage may vary or you may just no pay quite as much attention to lyrics as they do.

Just picking up on the shit music thread in here and how it has infested itself into everything. I know the exact moment everything changed. V festival 2006... I believe Prior to 2006 all the main festivals played proper music encompassing rock, indie, alternative, folk, country, metal, dance, trance etc. Etc. But they never played shit smash hits level pop, they had their own kids festivals for that crap. Then girls aloud played at v festival 2006 (I was there), they played in one of the tents (third stage). I have never seen so many fucking arsholes trying to get into a tent to watch such shit in my life, to say it was a success would be an understatement. Then every big festival started to slowly put pop acts on the bill. Now we are in 2022 and most festivals are now primarily made up of pop acts with all the other music genres playing second fiddle. It’s like a sick joke.... Robbie Williams played V98, Daphne & Celeste played Reading 2000. It’s older than that. It used to be Reading was rock and V was indie, then at some point in the mid 00s Reading/Leeds went indie and V went pop, Download got bigger and became the main rock one. Really though, currently there’s Glastonbury and then all other festivals, they’re all comparatively awful. The only downside (apart from the new capacity being far too high) is even with >100 stages there’s basically a denial that metal exists.

It did not go well. They were the opener on Sunday - metal day - with loads of metalheads nursing filthy hangovers/comedowns, all of whom had a lot of piss to spare.

Tbf, at this point, I reckon 20 year olds are allowed a whinge at the state of the world. Yeah, but the trouble is, whilst it is easier and easier to make/distribute your own music, the only ones that get any cut through are those that have backing/middle class families. What they are singing about bears no resemblance to their life. It's always been a bit like that (see also any creative industry) but the gap seems much bigger now.

Zombie games Days Gone and The last of us.
One is an overrated, clunky bore fest with a b grade made for daytime tv story. The other is Days gone. Which is a far far better game.
I feel better now.

To be honest, I thought the same at the time and made a similar argument, only with The Evil Within in Days Gone's place. But LoU2 blew me away so I've cooled off on the LoU slander.

Pulp are the one band that can knock Radiohead off their pedestal. Pulp > Radiohead > Blur. Guns'n'Roses made 1 decent album in the 80s, a lot of which is filler.

I’ve always had a soft spot for the darkness. Roger Taylor’s (queen) son plays drums for them now. Also their Xmas song is brilliant compared to most of the other Xmas shite
