I went to that gig too! It was brilliant
September 1997?
I think so (I’ve been to see them at few different places over the years) me and my mate went and stayed over in Dodgy b&b for the night. We even scouted out an indie club to go to afterwards (can’t remember the name of it). I saw them first at reading 94 where they played my iron lung for the first time as their upcoming single.

Woodstock 99 is often held as the point music died in America. Limp Bizkit, Lit, Bush, Korn, The Offspring all headlined.

I can't even really be mad about The Offspring, cause I have vivid memories of skate videos and Crazy Taxi to their music.

Just picking up on the shit music thread in here and how it has infested itself into everything. I know the exact moment everything changed. V festival 2006... I believe Prior to 2006 all the main festivals played proper music encompassing rock, indie, alternative, folk, country, metal, dance, trance etc. Etc. But they never played shit smash hits level pop, they had their own kids festivals for that crap. Then girls aloud played at v festival 2006 (I was there), they played in one of the tents (third stage). I have never seen so many fucking arsholes trying to get into a tent to watch such shit in my life, to say it was a success would be an understatement. Then every big festival started to slowly put pop acts on the bill. Now we are in 2022 and most festivals are now primarily made up of pop acts with all the other music genres playing second fiddle. It’s like a sick joke.... I kind of agree with you, I was at both the Reading and Leeds V fests. Had a blast mind you, was there for Muse as we won tickets to meet them and go on stage for the first couple of songs, we did choose to do that in Dublin though but went to all 3 concerts. Also got to see the Pogues twice which was fucking great and on my bucket list. But in saying that nothing notable in music has happened since that day exactly. Muse turned into absolute drivel post Blackholes and everything else since then is shite aside from Tim Minchin.

They're shit but they're not the same kind of dire as the rest of those listed, because at least they worked really well for Crazy Taxi. Also agree re: Radiohead and big stadiums, only time I saw them live was in a big stadium and they were great. I don't really get what the problem is supposed to be.

I’m so glad I got to experience reading 93-96, I still reckon they were the peak festival years. That walk from the train station to the site was a killer though back then. Oh and praying a scouser didn’t nick your tent and all your belongings

I went straight into emo after Limp Bizkit so my back catalogue is pretty shameful. Got a really broad taste in music now though as a result as I’m well aware my nostalgia bands are just that, and not necessarily “good music vs bad music”.
If I was a bit older I’d have definitely been grunge though and would probably think that scene was the be all and end all

Nice to see some old people agreeing that music happened to peak when they themselves were young

Ah!
I haven't seen them live since summer 2001, but of the three times I did see them, two (including Blackpool) are up there with the best shows I've ever witnessed.

If you were 20 now, would there be a ‘sound’ that defines this/last decade or year like there has been in the past?
As far as I see streaming has killed that, but in exchange given more choice and made it easier to find music than ever before if you put in as much effort as you did back then.

People can listen to Korn without wanting to push a pencil up their nose and into their brain to make it stop?

Atlanta-style mumble rap is the only thing on the radio these days, least in the US. Toss in some Caribbean reggaeton or K-pop if you like, but the ATL inspiration is there too.

People can listen to Korn without wanting to push a pencil up their nose and into their brain to make it stop? Yet funnily enough Jonathan Davis' vocals makes it sound as though he is trying to do that exact thing.

My wife loves Reggaeton. LOVES. I honestly should give more of it a chance. I even speak Spanish so I have no excuse not to. I don't know if that's hell for you though, living with it.

Timely enough, I’d never actually listened to a Radiohead album all the way though until last year. I figured it was probably about time and listened to ok computer, kid A and in rainbows. They are alright. I preferred the computer one because it’s songs have a good beat you can dance to.
Oh, and I listened to all guns and roses albums in a working day last week. Use Your Illusion could be a great album if they were merged and the 20 beta versions of you could be mine were taken out.
But my main takeaway is that if they didn’t know know so many fast, dangerous women, they would have about three songs. All about heroin.
And that concludes my review of old music.

About 90% of the songs on my regular playlist are from the 90s or earlier. Definitely agree that streaming/ease of access to digital music have watered down the quality a lot. It's still out there, but you really have to search for it among the dross.
Had to laugh earlier when I read that Wet Leg are apparently the hottest band of 2022 (admittedly it was just the Grauniad saying so) 'Chaise Longue' is kind of catchy, but I really despair if this is an act worth celebrating...

They will be this years ting tings. Hot indie bands like that have a shelf life of exactly eleven months.
