How about this one, the 90's wasn't 10 years ago.

I realised that when all my favourite music started cropping up on classic gold radio stations.

The Prodigy's Firestarter is closer in time to Carl Douglas's Kung-Fu Fighting than it is to anything released this decade.

Yeah, its depressing. The equivalent of me putting on 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' now is like my dad sticking on 'Hi Ho Silver Lining' by Jeff Beck in 1992.
This is literally my life now

How about this one, the 90's wasn't 10 years ago. I think TV and pop culture in general really isn't helping on this, given that they've been insisting any period between 10 and 30 years ago was "the 1980s" for a while, and pretending the '90s didn't even happen until very recently (Ryan Murphy is the only showrunner who seems to be willing to admit that the '90s existed). That and the first decade of the 21st century was pretty dire, culturally (the 2010s I'd argue were less dire), aside from longform TV and the odd videogame (but even there, the rise of MMOs helped turn it into a bit of a blur), which made it a bit of a trackless wilderland. It is pretty funny to see TV shows struggle with this though - they make a character 40 and want to flash back to his teenage years in the '80s, and it's like "Nah mate, dude was 7 in 1990, his teenage years were solidly in the '90s". Anyway point is I think it's harder to move on from the '90s when most pop culture has been trying to pretend they didn't happen, and it just went directly from like 1989 to 2005 or something.

The worst one is the 2000s, tbh. I still think of that as five minutes ago but almost everything from those ten years looks/sounds/is absolutely hideous now.

Is it just a new century makes numbers confusing thing or is something else causing us to feel like time is wibbly wobbly now?

Pitch Black and American Psycho both appear to have been released in 2000.
Not even sure what that means.

For some reason when I think about the 2000s I always think of Limp Bizkit's Rolling video, and there's a certain amount of disbelief that it actually happened and wasn't some kind of horrible fever dream.

It's weird to consider that Rollin' was pre 9/11

Sort of an act of terrorism in itself.

I've still got a weird affection for Limp Bizkit. Like I know Fred Durst is a fairly a shit vocalist, but the rest of the band are pretty decent. Borland does sound creative stuff with his riffs and the rythym section are pretty tight.
But it would be really weird to hear their music without Durst's terrible rapping.

Is it just a new century makes numbers confusing thing or is something else causing us to feel like time is wibbly wobbly now? I think it's pop culture not having had a really distinct "era" since the 1990s. Like, there's the '90s, the '00s, and the '10s, and whilst stuff changes, there hasn't been some massive shift in how people dress or cut their hair, it's been a lot more subtle and steady. On top of that, music has become increasingly balkanized, and whilst I don't think it's "got shit" or anything (except for the '00s, that was mostly shit), there's less music that you can just play and evoke an entire era for most people from a generation. Combine that with the media basically deciding that "the past" would be "the 1980s" for the last three decades, and it's pretty wibbly wobbly.

I think the 00s has formed an identity now - everyone was scared and there were tits everywhere.
I still think we're trying to wrap our heads around what the 10s were, but I'd say it was smart phones, dating apps, being less afraid but considerably less tits.
The 20s are already forming a pretty indelible identity. Not a good one.

Horizon Zero Dawn is pants. Its basically monster hunter with all the character and charm removed and they have replaced well designed monsters with rent a zoids that move around on a predetermined extremely limited AI path. Hated it after a few hours of play

90's style is fairly subtle, but when you see actual pictures from that decade, or watch a 90's show, it's pretty easy to recognise. Like Friends. Clothes are a bit baggier (without being hugely baggy. Except for JNCO jeans.)
It's actually pretty much the era that current trends seem to be aping. I'm only vaguely aware because my teenage niece's are still "with it", but there seems to be a trend for baggier jeans and slightly muted colours which all feels a bit 90's.
As a Nu-Metal fan in the late 90's, the combination of traditional "metal" clothing and sportswear was a marker in time. Thanks for that, Korn. Baggy jeans and wallet chains.
I might try and bring wallet chains back.

But everyone seemed to be creaming about MHW, which was my first attempt at the series and I was a bit gobsmacked. Gave up during the first return to the base camp.

I loved Limp Bizkit as a kid - Chocolate Starfish was the first album I bought with my own money - but fuck has it aged badly. Nu-metal is solidly in the regretful music trends category.
I once went through the effort of making my own version of Smackdown 2 that included Rollin' for the Undertaker's music. Booted on real hardware and everything.

Its got a steep access point and I understand why a lot of people don't get on with it as its mechanics are stuck in the past. However a lot us played it on PSP years ago so MHW seemed like a god send compared to that. If you have friends all at a similar level you can get some serious enjoyment out of it, but it doesn't make it easy for you or even explain how to get into it properly.

Related, I watched Spiderman (2002) last night, and yes the actual movie was a bit dated, but the opening credits in particular seemed ancient somehow. I'd forgotten that the MCU "cold open" style had become so mainstream, but it was jarring watching 5 minutes of bad spiderweb CGI at the very beginning.

Though 2 and 3 have much better opening credits, they storyboard the prior movie with artwork. Still some of the best opening credits I've seen.
