Hey kids, this is just a little rant. My firm, which is pretty small, probably 35 employees, is going through major changes to its structure and focus. The owners are handling it very poorly, so the rumours are flying and morale is, understandably, in the shitter. I've only been there since July, so I've only just got settled and this is doing my nut in a bit. - It's a regulated sector (Insolvency, if anyone is interested) and the cases have to be under the control of licenced practitioners ("IPs").
- Cases are through the roof & there's more work than we can handle at the moment. The marketing team won't slow down because they answer directly to the owner.
- At present, the work is split into sections that are dealt with by different teams - pre-appointment, post-appointment, investigations and closing
- They are changing this to a cradle-to-grave approach because pre-appt and post-appt team members moan that it's boring (agreed, but there's a reason some of them have been repeatedly knocked back from the investigation roles...)
- It's also moving to a volume business, which is a worry in itself. This isn't a sector that you can or should cut corners in because the regulators, creditors and other IPs can and do come for you.
- They also want to stick in the usual corporate gumph - personal development targets, self assessments etc.
- Most importantly - and despite the ever-increasing workload, they appear to be jettisoning 2 of the IPs - both of whom are hugely experienced - and bringing in 2 unknowns alongside the remaining IP, who is an incompetent sex pest. On top of that, reading between the lines of the conversation I had this morning with the consultant they hired to oversee the changes, I think they're getting rid of about 25% of the staff. This includes all of my team except (possibly) me, who they are minded to keep on as a manager, with a smallish pay hike to bring my salary up to the market ave.
It's left me feeling quite shitty. I like my team a lot and want to fill them in - none of them have been contacted in relation to any of this so that makes me think they are for the chop - but there's a strong implication that the conversation was confidential, and so self-preservation has kicked in a bit. I could end up jeopardising my own job.
Ugh.

There are set rules around notification re redundancy etc so I'd steer well clear and let them handle that. You can claim ignorance.

Been nearly 20 years since I had to navigate a firm through that though, so doubtless it has changed somewhat. As Dougs says, though, keep as clear as you possibly can from the process - especially whilst it's on the down-low.

Been nearly 20 years since I had to navigate a firm through that though, so doubtless it has changed somewhat. As Dougs says, though, keep as clear as you possibly can from the process - especially whilst it's on the down-low. There's no transfer to another employer as far as I'm aware, so TUPE won't trigger. Looks like they'll be under the threshold for consultation as well (20 emps). Good shout on keeping my head down. I'll do that and try to get my timesheets up to date.

It keeps getting better. Management meeting highlights:
The two new guys are already subject to major scrutiny from the regulators, so much so that, once their caseloads come though the door we have to review everything for compliance issues to rectify in a desperate effort to save their licences:- "Assume nothing, check everything. We don't even know if the cases are bonded [insured] correctly"
That's on top of the 10 or so new cases a week that will be coming in, the need to train totally inexperienced staff and train myself on processes that I am aware of, but have never had to deal with, pluuuuus figure out who does what because there doesn't appear to be any steer on that whatsoever. It also looks like we need another 10 staff, comfortably, to be able to do any sort of a decent job.
I'm inclined to get my Nov+Dec salary and then stacking shelves from Jan if need be, whilst I toot furiously on the whistle. But part of me wants to see this shitshow unfold.

Retained my job earlier this year after a restructure following a TUPE. Now they are planning on making changes to our current rota/shift pattern to a 4 on 4 off basis and remove overtime rates by going from paid by the hour to salary.
Less hours for the same money. Result? No not really as they intend to pay us based on last year's standard earnings before any O.T rate and the move to the living wage.
If that wasn't bad enough they also expect staff to cover leave/sick days over the year becuase in effect we now owe the company hours. If you don't work these additional shifts they won't take money back but will come in for a "little chat".

Danno at the moment no, ideally I want to see figures in an email so I know exactly what they are offering first. I know at least two people are planning to leave next year and this was before recent talks. If and when that happens I doubt they'd recruit anyone to keep the payroll to a minimum. It's difficult to know what to do for the best but I do have an updated CV ready.

They've been offering voluntary severance around mine, but not getting the numbers they need.
I'd fucking bite their hand off if they offered it to me (it would last me a couple of years of frugal living to find something else), but since I'm ops/safety critical, they never do.

Our redundancy pay is pretty good. During our last round some lifers were getting on for six figures, so they filled the 12 slots pretty quickly.

Well, initially I was told I would be Tupe'd across to the new company in April. I told my wife that it wasn't looking so bad after all since I had a follow up meeting and specifically asked that.
Then I got an email letter this evening saying I was at risk of redundancy and that I wasn't being Tupe'd across. I queried this and was told that yes I'm at risk of redundancy.
Feel a bit sick. I was told at 11 that things were bad, then at 2 that I was in the okay group and now I've been confirmed as out on my ear.
Apparently I've got until end of April. Actually, I feel like crying but I can't do that as I have to look after my family.
I just got through my computer login for the course I'm getting for anxiety and depression minutes ago. Think I'll take a sleeping pill and hope I don't wake.

I know it's scary that you have gone from being safe to redundancy, but it can be the thing that you needed. How long have you been there? I'm sure you will find something better. Use this as motivation to find a workplace more suited to you.

That sucks mate, but sometimes things happen for a reason and you've been saying yourself that you're not happy or fulfilled there for a while.
I know it's a shock and it's hard to do, but you shouldn't take it as a personal slight.
You're amongst friends here, with willing ears if you need to vent, too.

I'll snap out of it, just upsetting that I'm putting this on my family. I feel like a failure, which I know isn't rational. I've got a bad migraine from all this today, so I'm not thinking straight.

It's a truly shitty thing to be part of a large redundancy.
However as bizarre as it may seem given two years of Covid the recruitment market is insane at the moment.
It's very difficult to recruit at the moment, people don't want to move coupled with huge numbers of vacancies. A lot of projects and workforce planning was put on hold last year and now they are all getting the green light and need people in roles to deliver.
Take some time to process whats happened but trust me, Jan and Feb are going to be ridiculous for job opportunities. If you update your CV, LinkedIn profile and make your profile searchable on a few jobs you will have calls from recruiters for positions in no time.

Means a lot. You guys are all I have to talk to. I know I can be a moaning so and so and I know some people don't believe things I say, so it's nice that people take the time to say something in support.
I'm going to try and sleep and hope tomorrow I feel better and more myself. I need to get myself mentally stronger. The last few months have been quite tough.

We’ve had tons and tons of redundancies over the years and nearly everyone I’ve spoken to after they’ve left has said it was the best thing they ever did They might be lying to save face but the ones I’ve seen since have genuinely seemed good about it One of them got proper megabucks and went straight back to his old role / company on more money - he’d only been with us 2 years Another one tupe’d to one of our suppliers and carried on in the exact same role, sitting in the same desk, but with another company paying his wages

It's true, my wife's company has about 50 employees and they currently have 13 vacancies. Hang in there mate and give your head a chance to clear and you will be fine. Are you set for a half decent redundancy package at least?
