Came across this old "selfie" I took a couple of years ago. I definitely could have framed it better, but I like it as an impromptu idea, and it's a souvenir of that one time when I accidentally did something really illegal.
The "background" is the hull of an old minesweeper, beached on a military shooting range and used as target practice by the air force. I came across it randomly while looking at some maps while planning hiking routes. I spotted a weird little isolated bay that looked artificial. Looked at an aerial map and saw there was a little shipwreck just lying there (very unusual here), so decided to go have a look.
I didn't read up on the place or the ship until afterwards, so I didn't realise I was doing a crime. The area hasn't been used as a shooting range for decades and it's not a secret, but access is forbidden for safety reasons (old unexploded munitions). It's also still designated as a military installation, so taking pictures could theoretically land me in jail. In practice it's not like anyone would bother, but I did feel kinda stupid.

Finding a random shipwreck felt pretty exciting. We're usually very strict about "cleaning up", so you don't expect to stumble across stuff like this.

At the end of last year I was fortunate enough to be asked by the BBC News website to submit a ‘favourite’ image from the previous 12 months, to be featured within a 2023 roundup of other midlands based photographer’s work. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-67754785I’m pretty indecisive/changeable at the best of times so don’t really do favourites, but I submitted the following, mostly cos it was recent and of the midlands: Almost as soon as I'd submitted it, I decided I preferred this shot, as I think it has a more interesting/original composition: It was nice to be asked anyway

Lovely looking part of the world! Lucky you, the landscape around here is far from inspiring

I'm not that lucky unfortunately, though there are a few nice places within short drives of me thankfully. My folks live in Shropshire so it's always a good opportunity for some landscape photography when I go visit

Here's a couple of fairly recent ones. First one is with the GFX 50R, which I am loving right now
Slightly missed focus with this but I like it anyway

You need to take that GFX and a tripod out for some landscapes one day. The detail will be stunning.

Yep I will one day when the weather is less abysmal. I'm hoping to persuade more friends to let me take portraits of them. They're all pretty used to it by now I guess

The colour one looked kind of horrible on account of the dull light and high ISO. I tried to rescue it but it ended up looking quite cartoony, but black and white saved it.

Like most of my B&W photos. It hides a lot of imperfections! Here's a few I uploaded to flickr recently that I like

I'd say I can spot Fuji colours there. Chrome for the blossom? Eterna for the last?

I'm going to New York for a few days. What camera gear would you take? Kinda thinking just something with a 35mm equivalent lens and keep it simple. But I wonder if I should take a wide angle for when I'm up the empire state building

Fuji 16-55mm from the ones I know you've got would be my choice if I could only take one. But depends how discreet you want to be!

I have the 10-24 too so I was thinking maybe that and the 23mm 1.4?

Argh, that is a dilemma. I'm not great with wide angles, I've never quite worked out how to make it work for me, but yeah, you could get some amazing cityscapes and architecture shots with the 10-24. But then you're sacrificing the close up options 😬

Just get up in their face. I’ve used apps like Photo Transit before to calculate what would be in view from a particular vantage, with a particular lens.

I was kicking myself yesterday. I was out for a run and as per usual there were loads of red kites but behind them was a massive rainbow. I had no camera but if I'd had one plus a long lens I could have got some great shots of them passing across the rainbow.

That's so annoying, ha!
They might be the cutest of all the birds. The blue tits are pretty adorable though too. I got a pic of one mean mugging me the other day that was less cute... I'll try and upload it at some point. It'll make more sense then.

Here's a couple from New York. I'm not all that happy with the 1st one but I can't think how to edit or crop it to improve it. Open to suggestions
