wunty I'm not a parry expert by any standards and I finished it, so yes it is important but not Sekiro-important

The problem is, I cant do it reliably so I never do it in clutch situations. I can one/two shot cannon fodder and champion enemies dont appear that much, so I dont actually get that much practice unless I do it deliberately, which is killing myself. My strategy is, basically, charge heavy, back up until they whiff an attack, charge heavy, back up until they whiff an attack, charge heavy, stun, grapple, repeat. Pretty much me too. Parrying only really comes for me with boss attacks that I just have to learn otherwise I know I'm getting hit. Usually ends up with me seeing LIE OR DIE. I got the Two Dragons sword and I adore the moveset. A charged heavy that can also act as a parry, a regular heavy slashes and dodges back and when locked on you can move left or right after a regular slash. Scales in Technique too which suits me

I went for the STR tank approach - not my usual build preference in these games, but the top tier weapons do seem to be Motivity weighted, and you eventually have the option of getting so many Pulse Cells that you can just plough through a lot of things.

I accidentally ended up with dex because I didnt bother to look up what 'technique' meant and picked my starting class at random.
Seems like an OK choice in the end because you can still use a big bopper if you want or dance around with an agility weapon like the brolly.

If dex is a viable option then I’ll definitely go that first. I always do.

If dex is a viable option then I’ll definitely go that first. I always do. It's from a late game boss soul, but you might want to remember the Two Dragons' Sword in that case. It's got a couple unique properties, namely that you can move during a combo by moving the control stick, and that its charge attack has a built-in parry and counterattack in its charging animation (the end of the little flourish P does) that may have a more generous window than the actual parry.

I went Advance and did not regret it one bit, now I'm farming before starting NG+ and adding to Technic to use the a/m Two Dragons sword!

About half way through the game, you get the opportunity to respec everything if you arent feeling your build. I'm sticking with mine because it seems fine and I've already sunk resources into weapons that I cant be arsed to farm back.
Its all fairly standard stuff since it copies so much dark souls homework. You'll have the system licked pretty quick if youre a veteran. What I am not loving is having to invest so much into capacity. You get two weapon slots at the start and I havent filled them a single time as picking up a sheet of toilet paper will make you fat roll.

I spent 80% of the game "Slightly heavy" which is just about optimal. Ground for Capacity in late game once I got the big boink money stick from Alan McManus.
It's weird that they give you amulets to help with weight, but they themselves weigh so much and take up an amulet slot that they're basically useless.

I spend ages running the game with only one weapon equipped for that very reason (weight) and apart from a couple of times when my weapon broke and I panic-changed it, it was fine; I had my favourite weapons available and the rest stored away as to not get in my way, until I settled in a combination that worked for me and stuck to it

DLC and sequel confirmed. Couple of other things to be added to in a patch this month, weapon balance changes, rising dodge being given to the character by default rather than just a skill, more quartz to buy from Polendina, more fashion.

That's all very encouraging. I'm installed and ready. Soon as I finish LotF I'm jumping right in.

I hope you get refunded the quartz for the rising dodge. The first time I got shovelled to death I just shook my head.
They are right about being underpowered from the get go. The opening section up to the hotel is by far the hardest part of the game (so far).

Is rising dodge a necessity? I may wait until this patch comes out before starting then.

Its handy, for sure, but not 'necessary' as such until you are able to unlock it organically. The problem is that its basically quickrise and there is one robot early-ish on who will pound you into the ground like a tent peg before you can spec it, meaning youre fucked if you get hit and theres nothing you can do about it. Its basically a balancing issue.
That said, it should have been available from the start, same with double dash. Dont lock mobility skills away, you fucks.

Yeah one thing the game does which doesn't happen in From Soft game is that you're still vulnerable to attacks on the ground. Some enemies and bosses will have a chain of attacks where it'll slam you down and if you're not mashing dodge you will get hit again. I personally haven't invested in the rising dodge as stuff like an extra amulet slot or increased pulse cell charges is of much more value. The amount of quartz is limited too, you're not gonna unlock every skill on a single playthrough so you gotta choose what suits you best and dedicate putting in the quartz towards it. I think it's fine to have a mobility thing as something to work towards but getting hit otg is never great so prob something that should be on by defeault as they will do. No doubt there'll be weirdos online complaining the game's ruined for it.

I hope you get refunded the quartz for the rising dodge. I hope so too, then again he says about 2 extra quartzes being sold by Polendina, so they could be all the compensation we get...

I hope you get refunded the quartz for the rising dodge. The first time I got shovelled to death I just shook my head. There's always respeccing and getting something else as a workaround. But yeah, basic combat/mobility stuff really shouldn't be in the upgrade tree, or at most should all be right at the start (and definitely not behind such a scarce resource). It's like if you couldn't Ki Pulse until region 2 and an Adept dojo mission in Nioh...

Those shovel bastards deserve all that's coming to them; I've enjoyed sprinting around NG+ and paying them especial attention.

Different game entirely I know but I didn't really get into Spiderman 2 until I had put some points into traversal speed and unlocking the stuff to make you jump longer distances etc. At least it doesn't take that long to get to it. Suppose thats just the difference between being good or not good to have this kind of stuff locked in a skill tree, it's interesting.

Took me a while to get into but this is good.
Not sure whether the game wants me to dodge or block/parry so doing whatever at the moment.
Took me a while to get the first boss down.
I felt really rusty, and at times I got frustrated and felt like I cba with a Souls game right now. In typical Souls fashion thou, through some alchemical transformation I went from the initial ‘how the fuck am I supposed to do this’ to ‘oh, boss down effortlessly.
Now i want to keep going.

ned The game prefers that you parry instead of dodge, especially bosses who sometimes get their weapon broken after some successful parries. However, it's not as essential as in Sekiro, you can get away with merely blocking and getting back some of your health by attacking soon after, bloodborne style. I think you'll love it.

Thanks JonFE. I’ll spend a bit of time practising the parry timing then. Enjoying the atmosphere as well as the game play!
Cheers!

Finding the bosses in this a bit difficult!
Just done King of Puppets. Had to use a spectre thou. Phase 1 wasn’t too much trouble but the next phase was shredding me.
Great game, would almost believe it was made by Fromsoft.

ned If you are struggling with a boss, keep in mind that throwables bombs (fire, electric and acid) usually do a number on them, so it's handy to have some on you just in case...

I'm now using specters immediately for all the bosses and they are going down in one or two tries. I just cant be arsed with them anymore, the bosses are by far the shittest part of the game. I genuinely hate two or three stage bosses.
Loving the rest of it, though. I think I'm nearish the end, maybe? Collapsed Krat or something.

You can't go wrong with always having a good stock of throwing cells, given 2/3 of the tricky enemies are puppets. Also stock up on shot puts as they're brilliant for staggering. Say hi to the Malum District vendor from me when you find him - he'll become your best friend
