I like it because it feels like it’s more about discovery and exploration like tje first Mass Effect, but it has a more modern third person combat system like the second and third ones. Not I actually think combat in the first was bad. Give that system a Vanguard charge and it’s perfect IMO.
But it seemed as if it was going for the best of both worlds, while just never reaching the heights of the previous entries.

I was expecting it to feel like Mass Effect but on bigger maps but playing it at the moment does feel like we’re out there alone together and discovering things.

If there was one thing I could backport from Andromeda into the trilogy, it would be jump jets.

Thanks to them I spend basically zero time hiding in combat. Plus the cover doesn’t feel sticky like it did in the trilogy so I’m never sure if I’m actually in it or not

Having spent three or four hours with Andromeda, I can say that I'm enjoying it more than I'd expected to, based on its reputation.
The combat and exploration seem pretty solid so far, and the jump-jet makes for a nice addition on both fronts.
I'm not a fan of the writing, though - my current squadmates are typical "Oorah!" military types, and I haven't particularly warmed to anyone yet.
Also, opportunities to be a complete dick have been non-existent, much to my chagrin! Please tell me it improves on this score?
While playing Dragon Age: Inquisition, I found it easy to forget that it came out nine years ago as a cross-gen PS3/PS4 and Xbox 360/Xbox One game; while playing Andromeda, I can't shake the feeling that it seems less sophisticated than Inquisition, despite being three years younger.
There's plenty more to come, though, and I'm keen to get stuck in again later.

Just completed 2. Saved everyone cos I'm fucking awesome. Thoroughly enjoyed it, it's a much better game than the first, but I think I prefer 1 overall. I can't put my finger on why, but the story in 2 didn't grab me in the same way as 1. The whole game is about assembling your crew, and I must say I didn't connect with the crew as I did in 1.
I also felt they nerfed the Citadel at the expense of other locations, which was a shame. Love it though, a high 9/10.
Going to jump into 3 after doing some Hogwarting.

Is it just me, or does male Ryder sound *exactly* like Nathan Drake? I actually spent my first session thinking, "Man, Nolan North could've tried to mix things up a bit!" before I Googled it and found out it wasn't him.

Yep, I mentioned earlier. Not sure the VA's name (as I didn't search), but he's definitely got a Nolan North Jr. vibe.

I didn't mind the male voice. Only seen videos but female Ryder sounds dreadful.

And the first 20h are a blast... And then you keep playing and it becomes the same, the dullness settles it, the disconnections between the player (at least me) and the lore and characters is progressively worse but there is still 40h to go. I did make my Ryder braless with cool tatoos to have some little eye candy (but lore friendly) to just offset boredom

According to How Long to Beat, the main story can be wrapped up in less than 20 hours; while I'm still enjoying it, I can already tell that I'm not going to want to spent 60-odd hours seeing and doing *everything*.

I did spent traveling around doing sidequests, finding junk and maxing out relationships with the crew. Main questline is utter boredom (almost. surprisingly last mission was really fun). It repetitive and you have seen all very quickly while sidequest bring some variety and flavor to the game. I have 69h to be exact in the game and I did all quests side quests which are mapped. there is other stuff to find but you dont get waypoints for them. I am glad i have beaten it but the moment i did the game was out of ssd. I was relieved. but it took a year and half to beat it with huge breaks when i played Stellaris, Xcom2 and Imperator Rome. so had to recharge for big rpg.

Thanks, lukasz. I can see myself following the main questline for the most part, and doing the odd side quest here and there when something seems interesting (alongside crew loyalty missions for the characters I actually like). By contrast, I wanted to do pretty much everything in the Shepard trilogy, particularly ME2.

I think I’ve done nearly 20 hours and I’ve only just placed my second outpost.
Done a relatively complete feeling run on Voeld and managed as much of Eos as I could without being fried by radiation.
Companion quests starting to stack up too but once you’re planetside its easy to let the Tempest inbox and AVP requests be forgotten
Still having fun though, just need to mix up the team a bit more since I’ve only used Cara, Liam and Jaal so far.
Also, I keep switching about the helmet settings to keep on vibe with how horrendous the environment is, which is something I didn’t do in the trilogy. I like the immersion it gives me.

What exactly is the deal with Andromeda, anyway? Did EA - in their infinite wisdom - put BioWare's B-team on Mass Effect duty, while the top brass were put to work on Anthem? Did they lose a load of talented people between ME3 and ME:A?

Interesting read.
I don’t see how they could have turned the No Man Sky version into a functional Mass Effect. People want stories and character.
There’s certainly some lack of polish I’m starting to notice now but nothing game breaking. Its more like Bethesda shit like an NPC stuck trying to hop over a crate or a Remanent Assembler spawning a drone inside a wall. But super rare that even something like that happens. Its certainly no buggier than I remember Inquisition being, I was getting loads of texture and object pop-in during that game that hasn’t happened in this one.
I think having the story being a framing device rather than the focus of the game was probably the right decision. I compared it to Voyager earlier and I think that still stands up - the journey home was the context and individual episodes told their own stories, which is how I feel playing this.
Although it is a shame that Kett encampments don’t stay cleared. I’ve given up raiding them because the rewards are so meagre and I know they’ll be reoccupied next time I drive by anyway.

I agree that it's nowhere near as technically messy as it seemed to be at launch, although during a pivotal cutscene last night I noticed that Cora and Peebee were inside each other (which wasn't nearly as sexy as it may sound).

Ha! Wow. I haven't seen anything that bad, apart from the aforementioned Ceebee monstrosity.
The moment-to-moment gameplay is a lot of fun, and there was definitely potential to create a top-tier Mass Effect experience with the foundation they built, but the writing and roleplaying aspects really drag down the experience for me. (That, and the male lead sounding exactly like one of the best-known characters in modern gaming - what were they thinking?)

There’s some proper ropey writing whenever Ryder meets a new npc. There’s some lines that sound formal and like sure, he’s trying to do a professional job but others are like a bored call centre worker going down the same script over and over. It feels worst with the Angarans but that might just be because there’s more introducing there. “Tell me about yourself?” I’ve hit the 30 hour mark and so far I’ve colonised Eos and Voeld each to 100% viability, done every companion and location mission I’ve received and now about half-way through trying to restore Havarl. Biggest highlights outside of enjoying the general gameplay and most of the characters (not Gil and Jaal so much) the cutscene meeting the Kett fleet before Ayos and the two battles I’ve had with Architects. Those fights were epic. Gil is the Toby of this Mass Effect Office.

simple Are there any missable missions that you'd particularly recommend seeking out and doing? I've somehow got close to the end of the game without realising it, but I've only done the main missions, loyalty quests for Cora and Peebee, and the odd random mission that seemed interesting. I'm in no rush to wrap it up - although my backlog is weighing heavily on my mind! - and I'm happy to keep going a while longer. For me, the supporting characters are the main downside. I don't mind the overarching narrative of going to a new galaxy and finding a home there; the big bad is kind of underwhelming, but serviceable; and as I've said before, the core gameplay loop is a lot of fun. (Using Pull to lift a hapless enemy from behind cover, then shooting him repeatedly in the dick while he rotates in mid-air, never gets old.) But the NPCs... man, I just don't care.
In the Shepard trilogy, I became invested in the supporting cast, even though my original approach was, "Be an asshole to everyone you meet." It didn't take three games for that to happen, either - I started out by sassing Liara for the predicament in which I found her, but found myself seeking her out for a casual chat before ME1 had drawn to a close, for instance.
I just don't give the smallest of shits about chatting with Liam Gallag-huh, Fake Wrex, Wannabe Garrus, et al - they're too bloody boring, and that's a huge downside in a BioWare game.

Absolutely. I was really invested in many of the Trilogy's characters, and that as someone who usually doesn't care about video game NPCs. Andromeda's feel closer to Fallout 4 or something where I just don't give a shit about anyone. There are things I love about Andromeda, but this was very disappointing.
