The main thing is everyone thinks humans are dicks and say they’re reluctant to help you. Lots of little dialogue lines when you do heroic stuff that’s like “didn’t expect a human to help”.

Come on, we are dicks. We know that, I'm sure the entire galaxy knows that (hence no first contact).
However, I always find the human exceptionalism quite extraordinary, in Mass Effect, in Star Trek etc...
We seem to be unique in able to exhibit all characteristics , whereas aliens only get one. It's always seemed quite jarring to me. I suppose the different races in science fiction actually represent certain character traits, a different part of our own psyche to make sense of. To me though, it smacks of othering, which I hate. The Krogans/Klingons are warrior races, Salarians are all smart, Asari are all wise etc...
I'm rambling now, I'll shut up.

Yeah, monolithic alien cultures are always a bit depressing, either through lack of imagination from the writers/worldbuilders, or because you can extrapolate that they used to have lots of diverse cultures but the one you see all the time is the one that won all their world wars or something.

What next, alien worlds should have more than one weather biome?

This thread made me play it again. 17hrs to compete the first game and even though I missed a few things it's nice to blast through it quickly.

Giving Paragon Lost a watch while working from home this morning. I don’t mind James as a character and I like having the option of a generic soldier man in my squad for side missions but I’m not sure he’s earned his own anime movie.
It looks like Mass Effect but the writing is very bad and the animation isn’t great either. No one looks like their in-game originals and its almost like the script was procedurally generated from a bank of military cool guy cliches.
They should’ve done an Archangel movie not a James prequel.

I guess it comes back to the old adage that sci-fi simply reflects our current time back at us - by extension, it would reflect us, as well.

Yeah, I remember being disappointed by that. The very first conversation anyone has in the movie is one of the marines sexually harassing someone and grabbing their arse. The tone is really weird. Like Mass Effect can be a thirsty game but its not got a molesty energy even if you are trying to dial in the right code to see two mannequins dry hump for ten seconds.

Mass Effect 3 finished. What an epic. I’m very happy I didn’t remember as much of it as I did ME2 as it was much easier to get swept up in everything. Only a couple of negatives and they’re minor. First, the inconsistency as to whether the gun you were carrying in in-engine cutscenes was part of your loadout or not. Sometimes yes, sometimes no? How hard could that be to fix? Armour parts always switched out correctly, why not weapons? Second, I can’t decide if I left it too late to do the Citadel DLC. I did it as the final mission before the point of no return so it felt like an odd shift in dramatic stakes. Third, as discussed, would it have made more sense if Earth was the last world to be invaded rather than the first? The good. Basically everything else. The story was huge and dramatic, the characters more fleshed out and connected than a lot of tv, the combat satisfying, the world and lore rich. Plus the continuity of presentation that Legendary Edition implements really felt like it wrapped up a single huge experience. On the ending, honestly, I never played it without the patched extra content but I don’t hate it. As with narrative games like TellTale games or Life is Strange, its the journey you take to get there that informs you final choice. Having you choose how things play out doesn’t invalidate the previous 100 hours of gameplay because its my understanding of the universe, characters and my Shepard that made me go the way I did. And to be honest picking Destroy this time rather than Synthesis as I had in the past felt a lot more satisfying and like I’d made the right choice. Next up: do it all again in a new galaxy. Never played Andromeda before so it’ll be interesting to see if any of the big decisions from the trilogy carry over or get referenced.

Will do. Think I’ll need a little buffer while I comedown from the Reaper invasion.

Re: simple’s ending You made the actual right choice. Synthesis is really the wrong decision as it’s giving the reapers and the star child what they want. You also could’ve just started blasting the space kid

I remember in the end feeling pretty aggrieved that my Shepherd defied all the odds only to have 3 endings laid out for him. Or that I could shoot the little dumb star child over and over and have it mean nothing. Would have rather fought to the end as that's what we were all about. Of course they patched it in because a lot of people felt similar.

Re: simple’s ending You made the actual right choice. Synthesis is really the wrong decision as it’s giving the reapers and the star child what they want. You also could’ve just started blasting the space kid Agree Dominate is just what Cerberus wanted and was destined to fail.
Synthesis was the Catalyst’s idea and he’d just told you he was running the Reaper show. Especially after the Leviathan dlc there’s no way you could support the plan. I remember first time feeling like this was the intended canonical ending but this time the kid laud it on so thick there was no way it was anything but a Reaper trick.
Destruction is the only one that gives any agency to the organic races, plus what else have you done all that fighting for if not freedom and survival? One other question about the ending was that Martin Sheen voicing the dad in the post credit scene?

I assume most of the grotesques must have been patched out because a few hours into Andromeda, I think I’m about to introduced to the Notmandy, and I haven’t seen any uncanny nightmare faces. Two or three npcs whose playmobil hair isn’t lit by the atmospheric lighting on the Nexus but nothing like youtube seems to have completely shat itself over if you search for this game on there. Already picked up two scan x of thing filler missions so I guess there’s going to be plenty of busywork alongside the life and death stuff. Was surprised to learn that the Andromeda mission left the Milky Way sometime before ME3. I suppose it means they can dodge continuity issues that way but really any of ME3’s endings could have set humanity on a path to extra-galactic colonisation. Just give us a little questionnaire thing like Inquistion did or a comic like the one linking ME1 and 2.

I honestly never thought it was that ugly. Don’t get a lot of the complaints about it. 360-gen Lego hair aside, it looks about as good as you could expect from an RPG of that era, and the environments in particular look spectacular. That said, it does have a bit of the Inquisition-style semi open world filler and DA2-style cut corners, most glaringly in that literally every Asari that isn’t Peebee uses the same model.

I suppose it might’ve felt like a bigger deal at launch with ME3 having been five years earlier but coming straight off the trilogy where all the human women and Asari share the same body and there are only maybe three noncombat male models across the whole series it really doesn’t bother me much.
It looks good. Maybe one or two textures aren’t as sharp as the LE but then there is another four year gap between MEA and LE’s remaster job.

It was mostly the animations, a lot of which weren't finished (and in some scenes, not even there) on release. Especially ME2 and 3 did a great job (within their technical limitations, at least) at making face movement believeable and natural enough to make characters feel pretty real--very important in games relying so much on engaging character interaction.
When MEA was released, facial animation was janky, eyes erratically jumping around and all, and much of the time their faces were like in a nondescript default state rather than expressing anything. Characters often felt like broken automatons rather than actual people. It was distracting and throwing people out of the immersion, especially in contrast to ME2/3.
They improved most of that through patches, although I'm still disappointed how e.g. Krogan mouth movement looks primitive even compared to ME1. I also don't like the lighting which a lot of the time looks pretty flat and washed out.
I never thought of it as a generally bad looking game, it looks great in places, but that it fell short of its previous gen predecessors in some regards was disappointing.

I’m amazed how little I remember about 2. Key stuff rings a bell, I have just done the Shadowbroker stuff and that obviously stands out, but mostly it’s like playing a new game. Loving it. Bit too much combat for me but that’s a minor complaint, as ultimately that is the game.
Andromeda is £6 on psn atm so I need to remember to actually buy it.

Unlocked the Nomad and… that’s one big environment. I think this going to be a long game.
Enjoying the initial exploration and talkiness of Andromeda so far. Outside of the combat it feels very television-y.
Went with a default looking male Ryder and he feels like a decent fit as a nervous noob after spending so much time with Femshep’s hyper confidence and competence. The shift to tonal answers rather than paragon/renegade is quite interesting too, so far at least its helped round the character out without him being a superhero or enormous dick.
That Turian is just FemGarus though.

Wait so to craft an item I need to research it using one currency then craft it using a combination of another different four resources? Piss off
Also, there are three different research currencies which each inform different tech trees?!

I’ll probably make do with what I find in the field like any other rpg but still, its a baffling decision when each of the previous games was trending toward simplifying. Although it makes sense in context since the Nexus has bot all resources but its not convenient gameplay.
Still, getting to pal around doing so many talky missions and meeting the race of friendly bellends does make me feel like there’s a big Voyager vibe this time around and I’m into that.
I haven’t had much time with the alien crewmates yet but the human ones are all pretty good. Apart from Gil who looks like a PS3 character and is a right bore.

Gil is terrible. The one character I didn’t go chat with between missions. The Scottish pilot lady looks like a PS3 character too, but she’s at least fun to talk to.

Overall I’m enjoying it though. Its very much a “just live in this world” game than one with a plot or any urgency. I’m about 15 hours in and it feels like I’ve covered as many major plot points as Shepard would have managed in maybe three hours of main quest.
Basically it’s letting me roleplay Star Trek even more than the trilogy did and I’m happy with that.
Putting on Ryder’s jacket in the default white colour scheme is quite 70s Buck Rogers too
