Lee
Kate Winslet is very good at acting. Also has good new boobs. I’ve only really seen Andy Samberg doing Lonely Island stuff so seeing him playing a serious part in a holocaust film was slightly surreal.

Moneyball - 9/10
Brad Pitt eats stuff all the time, yet Jonah Hill is the fat one. Maybe throwing bins around burns a lot of calories. Baseball is boring but this somehow isn't.
Alien - 8/10
First time watching this obscure film. Was a 6/10 until Sigourney is suddenly in a skimpy vest and knickers combo, then it bumps to a 10, so 8 overall.

Moneyball is a very good sportsy movie, watched it several times, but then I like baseball and was aware of the analytics Oakland used at the time.
Good movie despite Pitt's lack of acting talent

It's good film, shame it features the uber-cunt that is Bobby Kotick though.

Rogue One - a cinema
I think this is the maybe the fourth or fifth time I've seen it at the cinema as well as on disc. It's still fucking great.

Conversely I have liked it less the more I have watched it, but still better than most of the recent Stars Wars content Disney has shat out.
Then again, I liked Solo, so what do I know

I rewatched Solo a couple of days ago, I was in the mood after playing a lot of Outlaws, I still enjoy it. It's a bit clunky at times but it's pretty fun and it's nice seeing the Falcon not looking like a complete mess in the later films, Lando kept that ship factory fresh.
It also works quite well in showing how good the voice actor for Qira (Tamaryn Payne) is in the game, she does a very good Emilia Clark.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
Ugly CGI nonsense with very little redeeming value. It had less Amber Heard in it compared to the first - so there's 2 points for that.
2/10
Anyone But You
Tried a modern romcom and... it's as formulaic as you'd expect it to be.
Friends' wedding - check. Comedy friend - check. Will they won't they - check. "Funny" dad - check. Some running at the end to get to the person walking away - check.
It's OK and serviceable if you like this sort of thing.
Second time I've seen Glenn Powell (after Twisters) and whilst he's still a step up from the Sam Worthingtons of this world, he's still a way off leading man material. I can't tell if Sydney Sweeney is any good, she keeps distracting me.
5/10

A Quiet Place: Day One
What an utterly pointless sequel. It was well made, there was some heart to the main character and the cat. It just didn't bring anything to the table, that we hadn't seen in the other two films. Perhaps if I hadn't watched the other two, then I'd have enjoyed it more.
I give it pointless sequel out of 10.

Am I imaging it, or has it been a bit of a naff year for movies? I genuinely think the best thing I've seen all year was The Fall Guy, which was just super silly.
The big hitters have good but not excellent. Furiosa was good but it left me wanting to watch Fury Road as it was the better movie, Challengers was a huge letdown, Deadpool & Wolverine was good fun but didn't offer anything new as such. What has there been this year that's going to stand the test of time?
Has epic quality TV killed off cinema or are we just suffering the fallout from the writers strikes and covid delays etc?

According to my Letterboxd diary, I've seen 3 new films this year that I've rated 5 stars. Those would be Poor Things, All of Us Strangers and Civil War. Dune Part 2 I gave 4 1/2. Thought all of those were excellent. Also really, really liked Late Night With the Devil, Furiosa, Kinds of Kindness and The End We Start From.
So, personally, think it has been pretty good. I would say though that there has also been a lot of downbeat films. Also quite a lot of horror films. I suspect that says something about the times we are living in.

If you are in the US, then they might be 2023 films. They were all on general release in UK cinemas in 2024 though.

The Sixth Sense
My other half had never seen this and was completely ignorant of the twist. I wasn't really watching the film - more watching her watch the film and enjoying her reactions. She didn't see the twist coming and was suitably shocked when it happened.
It's great though and still stands as Shyamalan's best. Stellar performance from Osment.
8/10

I agree that the year for movies has been a bit lacking (relatively speaking). Even the festival things I saw weren't as good as previous years. But there's still loads of great movies out there if you look for them; they just don't necessarily get wide cinema releases.

I just found out Emily Osment’s brother is the kid in Sixth Sense. The things I didn’t know.

I've just found out Haley Joel Osment has a sister called Emily and that she sang on song denying climate change.

Ah, fair enough. Just saw it listed on her IMDb. First time I've heard of her.
Pretty certain Haley Joel Osment is a lot more famous than her.

I’m sure he is, though I’ve not seen anything he’s been in as an adult. Emily’s best known for being the best friend in Hannah Montana as a kid, and is now in Young Sheldon. Just found it interesting that they both had big separate roles at a very young age. Seems their dad was an actor but never anything major so doesn’t seem like a case of nepo babies.

Haley is still in quite a few things. Very distinctive look so he's hard to miss when he crops up. He was in that abysmal Kevin Smith film about the guy being turned into a walrus for one.

Agree - although I don't get to the cinema much, rooting around Disney, Prime, Sky and Netflix for something to watch the other day was pretty slim pickings. We always end up retro, especially for family films. Haven't been keeping my Letterboxd up to date either. I think it's definitely still writer's strike and covid. And perhaps an impact of difficulty finding investment due to the changing circs in the financial sector.

Saw two great animated films over the weekend, one a first-watch, the other I've seen quite a few times.
Nimona (2023) ***** Really interesting, visually unique fantasy, mixing cyberpunk futurism with swords & sorcery shenanigans. The plot, with its dissection of "difference" and "who's the real monster" stuff, is fairly on-the-nose, but it's a nice hook to hang the central performances on. Pleasingly progressive, utterly gorgeous, nicely emotional, and incredibly good, gnarly fun for kids. (Netflix)
Shrek 2 (2004) ***** I wondered how well this had dated since I used to adore it on release. Pleasingly, it remains as funny and compelling as ever. The little pop culture sight gags are kept in the background; the crass humour is minimalised; really it's just the art style and character design that feels old. The plot motors along with characters we enjoy spending time with, culminating in a great, hilarious, action-packed finale. I bet Shrek 3's still shit, though. (Sky)

Furiosa (Blu-ray) - 4/5
First rewatch at home and I definitely didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much as I did in the cinema, I think at the time I came out saying it was better than Fury Road, which it isn't. But, it's still brilliantly mad and really doesn't feel as long as it is, it just rattles along being all crazy. It's much more of a throwback to 80s fantasy quest films imo. I did notice the shonky CGI this time round, which definitely detracts from the experience.
Somewhere (Netflix) - 4.5/5
Probably my favourite Sofia Coppola movie, it just drifts along. I could watch the GTA style camera angle of the Ferrari driving through various LA scenes all day.
I Am Legend (Blu-ray) - 4/5
Watched the alternate ending, which on looking them up seems like the better one. Never seen this before and I was surprised at how good it was. Might be Will Smith's best performance, great execution of post-apocalyptic setting and the effects hold up really well. The only thing that lets the CGI down is that all the vampires have the same character model!
I will say that there definitely has to be a better way of hunting deer than ragging around after them in a muscle car.

Watcher - 8/10
American Girl moves to Romania with her husband, she doesn't know the language and stays at home all day whilst he works. A strange man across the street watches her from his window...
Its another slow burner with a great ending. Also the constant gaslighting by her husband and anybody else she meets in Romania, telling her she's imagining everything is effectively done.

I dunno, I'd say Poor Things, Dune, Furiosa, D&W and even Inside Out 2 are probably five star films, or very close to that. Plus there's been damn good "lesser" films: Fall Guy, Abigail, Drive Away Dolls, Bad Boys, and even the new Beverly Hills Cop. Arguably there's not been some stupendous behemoth that's knocked me sideways but I've been pretty pleased with the cinema this year. I'm also really looking forward to stuff like Paddington 3, Wild Robot, War of the Rohirrim, Super/Man, Megalopolis, Wolfs, and - because I'm a huge nerd - Transformers One.

There have turned out to be a lot more films I wanted to see this year than I expected. At the start of the year it was looking a bit barren, but it actually turned out there were too many films for me to go and watch them all.
