Rebel Ridge - A decent Netflix movie. Its the guy who did The Green Room so its got some pedigree and he manages to do something relatively interesting with the well worn 'Special Forces guy finds himself in hick town' story. Its too long, obviously, but it is cool when it gets going and the main guy is great. Apparently its a British guy who took the role after John Boyega bailed and, honestly, he could be The Next Action Star. Good for him. high 6/low 7/10 High six seems fair. I wanted more revenge in my revenge flick. Also I didn't need so much setup, ACAB, go in guns blazing.

Not sure if I'll keep going with number 3.. I don't think I've ever rewatched that one. Do it! I think its properly good. A bit less grounded than the first two but still good stuff. Things wobble a bit harder after that but I think 3 holds up.

I watched The Union on netflix the other day, with Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg.
It's really really terrible. The chemistry between them is a major focal point and takes up a lot screen time, but it is not interesting at all. The action and choreography is weak and even pathetic at times. Compare it to Marky Mark in The Shooter, which I really enjoyed.
The whole premise of the film is some intel they need to rescue as it contains details on all spies and soldiers. Why don't they just focus on destroying it...

Speaking of Halle Berry, I liked Executive Decision.
I mean, they literally jettison Steven Seagal in the first act of the film. What’s not to like?

Speak No Evil (the new one)
I saw the Danish original at a film festival a couple of years ago, and found it genuinely morally repulsive.
This one is... less so. Which makes it better than the original, in that I didn't want to have a cold shower afterwards to cleanse my soul. But also worse, in that it's just a regular-ass horror thriller now. James McAvoy is great in it, but it's less nasty overall - in both a good and bad way.
I don't know/10
Maybe 7?

Speak No Evil (the new one)
Thought I'd seen the Danish one. Haven't actually!
Thoroughly enjoyed my time with this. Excruciatingly tense at times. James McAvoy was amazing. Almost an Oscar nom worthy grade-A knobhead performance I reckon. Whole cast was decent across the board.
Most fun I've had watching a horror in a while. Very intrigued to watch the original now.

Return of the Jedi (at the cinema today)
I've never seen this in the cinema even when it was re-released with the jarring CGI additions which are even more jarring today. It's exceptionally cheesy, not much really happens in the middle which is quite flabby and quite a rung down from what's been done before but gosh darn it has that makes you care, with characters you actively give a shit about which is quite stark when I compare it to today's movies where I really didn't have those kind of emotions and was able to write them off quite easily.
7.5/10

Saw A New Hope on Monday (it must have finished just as the news of James Earl Jones death broke) and agree it is striking how much better those original films were than what followed.
It isn't like the dialogue is much better or the direction is doing anything special. I think what it mostly comes down to is the simplicity and efficiency of the story telling. These are classic tales with well known archetypes that we all instantly relate to. Plus, it doesn't get too bogged down in what is happening elsewhere. We get glimpses of a wider galaxy, but it is just in passing dialogue before getting back to the main characters. It isn't jumping around the place and stays focused on the droids arriving on Tatooine, Luke getting off Tatooine, Luke and team rescuing Leia and escaping, Rebels blowing up the Death Star. Everything flows and progresses logically.
Also, the lack of CGI really helps. It was really obvious going from the streets of Mos Eisley, with its shit Special Edition CGI creatures and then into the cantina with all the costumes and puppets. Looked so fantastic and lived in.
Hopefully see Empire this weekend.

Y’know, I can barely tell what was in the 1984 film and what’s been added.

Hahaha. Oh my god, when that bit started I actually did wonder if I was having a fever dream. Funnily enough after Leia killed Jabba and she was no longer wearing her bikini two guys got up and left.

I haven't watched the original trilogy for over 20 years now because I refuse to watch the added shit he put in.

Coincidentally I'm going to watch Empire tomorrow at the cinema.
The Sea Beast
Netflix CG animation about pirates who hunt beasties. It's basically How to Train Your Dragon, but re-skinned.
I enjoyed it, but I am a sucker for pirate ships and sea shanties. It's well animated too.

Rita, Sue and Bob, Too - Man, I love this movie. It reminds me so much of growing up in that era around that location. Not that I got nonced by a middle aged man pretending to be 25, I just recognise every character in there. From the people living in the shitholes to the new-build dwellers who think they are so much better. And I like how there isn't really a message (apparently a change from the original play), a statement or really even a plot. Stuff just happens and then they get a happy ending. 8/10 I was worried where this review was going after the first sentence.

Why are they re-releasing all the Star Wars movies in cinemas? Is t some kind of anniversary again? And why aren't they releasing them over here?? [edit] Though every time this happens I get all excited for about 5 minutes until I realise it's going to be the shitty special editions and my interest drops. Still, the [redacted] have only seen them at home, so it'd be cool to take them to see on the big screens. (They've only seen the Custom Special Editions though, so they haven't been subjected to some of the shit cgi yet) PS/ For home viewing, there are some very well done fanedits that take out most/all of the tacky additions, and improve some of the awful colour grading on the dvds/bluerays. Harmy's Despecialized Editions for the purist, Adywan's Star Wars: Revisited for those that don't mind big changes and 'improvements'. My go-to is Hal9000’s Custom Special Editions, though I don't know if those are available in 4k. They're like a middle ground between the two. Basically cutting out all the cgi crap, but leaving it in where it works (like cloud city backdrops, some addition shots of space ships, some cleaning up of matting, etc..)

Fellowship of the Ring
Still my favorite of the trilogy, though I hadn't watched it in years. Having rewatched it recently, I now remember why. The plot moves quickly, there is always something happening to keep your attention, and all of the focus is on traveling and adventure, with a bit of action to keep things tense when needed, but not nearly so much as to become boring. It's kind of telling that there are only two big fights, and the first one, in Moria, happens almost two hours into the movie. And the locations - the countryside inn, the mountain pass, the mines full of goblins. Out of all the movies, it's the one that feels closest to an RPG campaign.
The CGI is obviously showing its age, enough to be distracting at times, but I guess it comes with its time of release. It's still not as common as later movies, several of the scenes would have been nearly impossible with practical effects, and it still looks quite good overall.

I must have seen it ten times but I still love it every time. Might have to watch them all again soon. It must be a good 2 years since the last session.

Easily one of the best looking and sounding 4K films.
