Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
A fun movie, lots of practical effects and some nice gags there. True, there was almost nothing that really made me laugh out, but I was grinning for most of the movie and that's gotta count for something.
Meanwhile, it's better not to think too much about the story, or lack thereof. The whole ex-wife subplot was pretty pointless, as well as Willem Dafoe's role. And I'll always say that Monica Bellucci needs to keep her mouth zipped, because soon as she talks, the world is reminded she is the worst actress ever.
Anyway, the first movie also had relatively little substance, it was just a fun romp with ghosts and ghouls. So is the sequel, and that's good enough for me, even with the slow start.
7/10

Ghosts AND ghouls? I wasn’t interested before but now you have my attention.
Tonight I watched Blackhat Directors Cut. It was very silly and so very serious 🧐 3/5

Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain
A very silly comedy with shades of Lonely Island/Matt Stone & Trey Parker. You'll know from the offset if it's for you or not. 3 friends head off on an adventure to rekindle good times but then yada yada yada... it's not really important tbh.
It's dumb but worked for me at the weekend.
Oh, and John Goodman.
7/10
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
A silly comedy with great music. 3 convicts head off on an adventure... wait, what? A lovely rewatch of a movie that just bounds along from one scene to the next with gerbil faced optimism and a fantastic soundtrack. It still works.
Oh, and John Goodman.
8/10
(both on Sky Cinema)

The Blood on Satan's Claw - 7/10
The final folk horror movie in the Unholy Trinity and unfortunately the worst. Although both The Wicker man and Witchfinder General have both aged massively, they have proper star power and much better direction. Blood on Satan's Claw looks cheap, sounds cheap and the acting is pretty terrible, but it still somehow works. It starts off slow then really picks up at the half way point and its a fun watch. I've no idea why this is so highly thought of though as its nowhere near in the same league as the other two.

I think it was originally made as an anthology film then stitched into a single narrative later which accounts for some if its shonkiness. Along with a tiny budget, obviously.

Was listening to Kermode and Mayo's Take earlier and it sounds like you can add Starve Acre to the list of folk horrors (has anyone mentioned it yet?): www.imdb.com/title/tt17521612/Matt Smith is a pretty good casting decision for a British folk horror as he looks like a gnarled oak.

Its not folk-horror but since its got a psychedelic edge and Ben Wheatley says they’re part of a shared lineage of what’s beneath the skin of Britain I keep wanting to recommend Sightseers as a companion to Kill List and Field in England If I’m remembering correctly Michael Smiley’s character from Kill List actually passes the Sightseers at one point

I watched sightseers at the time when it came out but didn’t think much of it. I think I was expecting a comedy and didn’t know who Ben Wheatley was. I should really watch it again as I suspect I’d love it now.

Not folk horror as I'm also running through teen horror with my eldest daughter
Scream 6 - 8/10 Still very good, and the kills etc. are inventive and well staged, social commentary and meta is lacking, we are definitely getting series fatigue...
I know what you did last summer - 8/10 Not on the same level as Scream 1, 2, 4 & 5, but still very good, with a strong cast. Strangely lacking in kills for the first 3/4s then it picks up in the last 1/4. Its also absolutely brilliant at the jump scares.

Legend (1985) *** I saw this as a kid, and I remembered it just as an eighties fantasy film (in fact, I used to get it confused with Labyrinth a lot; two effects-based fantasy films beginning with “L” that had a terrific baddie). However, rewatching it, it’s batshit; it’s much less a cohesive adventure film than a mood piece, almost like watching a very expensive music video. Ridley Scott’s commercial background is very evident in the slow-mo and dry ice. The effect is all feeling, little substance; an evocative fairy tale. Cruise is interesting in an early role (maybe I’m imagining it, but I felt like his actorly-ness was straining against a role that was all archetype, like he was looking for an angle in his portrayal); Tim Curry is phenomenal as the demonic villain. Anyway, I’ve written quite a lot about this because it’s weird and interesting, and truth be told I could write loads more; I’m not sure how good it actually is, but it’s definitely worth revisiting as a singular eighties curio. (Prime Video)

Rita, Sue and Bob, Too - Man, I love this movie. It reminds me so much of growing up in that era around that location. Not that I got nonced by a middle aged man pretending to be 25, I just recognise every character in there. From the people living in the shitholes to the new-build dwellers who think they are so much better.
And I like how there isn't really a message (apparently a change from the original play), a statement or really even a plot. Stuff just happens and then they get a happy ending.
8/10

I know I'm late (or is this always on time) and I won't be adding anything that's not already been said once or twice here before but I started my own re-watch this week so..
Alien - 10/10 - watching this for the first time in maybe a decade and I'm still struck by what a sense of place the Nostromo has. Everything just feels really lived in. After dealing with some giant spiders in the house recently I am reminded again by how much I can't handle face huggers as I think they were about the same size to what I've been dealing with.
Aliens - 10/10 - it's still awesome and just a great popcorn action film, I still love the OTT marines and all the ridiculous banter only to get decimated within minutes of the first bit of action. The loader scene at the end has aged really well I think and has a great sense of weight that just makes it more engaging then all of the CGI-fests we watch nowadays.
Not sure if I'll keep going with number 3.. I don't think I've ever rewatched that one.

Having rewatched it a few days ago, the production design (sets, costumes, tech, ships, etc..) is amazing, and I really like the acting and the portrayal of the characters. It's just the overall plot that has dated badly, what with the cast doing all the dumb things. It's almost as if they've never watched a horror movie.

Final Destination 2, Wrong Turn, etc.. from the 90s. Plus The Craft and The Faculty, though they aren't exactly horror. Blair Witch is teen *and* folk I guess. But also Happy Death Day, Fear Street (1-3 they aren't all great, but they're interesting as a trilogy), You're Next (if you can handle the terrible acting), Freaky, Totally Killer, etc..

The Faculty is on the list, didn't think of Wrong Turn so yeah that too (and some if its sequels). Is Disturbing Behaviour any good? Open to some other recommendations too.

I'm not sure it's worth following some of the franchises much beyond the first movie though. I seem to remember a lot of them going downhill rapidly. Halloween H20? Mimic? Not exactly all time classics, but fun enough. More 80s I guess, but Tremors and Critters.
