To be fair I'm so old now I'd probably forget by the time I watched it. But thank you.

As shit as Covenant was, the breakfast scene near the beginning was a nice, unobtrusive callback. At least from what I remember, the subsequent fingering might have altered my memory.

I’m loathed to change the subject from Alien:Romulus, but the missus wants me to watch Trap next week. Is it alriiiiigghhht or should I threaten to leave her unless we see Romulan.

Ps. got run into by someone in a wheelchair as I wrote that. Seated in a cafe. And they said “mind out you cunt!”
Entirely my fault. My apologies.

The premise sounds good, but I've heard nothing positive about it so far. Another Shyamalan dud by the sound of it.
Shame, as he seemed to be getting his shit together with Split/Glass.

I thought it was a pretty good B thriller. There aren't many of these kinds of movies that still get cinema releases, which is a shame imo. You'll have a good time.

It’s what she wants to watch so I’ll give it a go.
I was one of the four people who liked Old, so I might be alright.

I also liked Old Although they should never have included the reveal at the end. Sometimes just watching people experience and cope with an unknowable mystery is a good enough idea on its own. Yes, you as well Ridley Scott

Anyway, I saw more movies that aren't Alien Romulus.
Welcome Space Brothers (at a cinema)
A documentary about the Unarian religion/spiritual movement/UFO cult from San Diego. I didn't know much about them before, they're pretty wild!
Most of the interviews are from former and current members, and the documentary itself is pretty neutral as to how much of a hoax the whole thing is. Which I found refreshing tbh, it lets you make your own conclusions about them without beating you over the head with it.
8/10
September Says (at a cinema)
A weird, sort of Gothic drama about a couple of sisters, July and September, living with their single mum in Ireland. July is meek, September is aggressive and controlling. They get suspended from school after an encounter with bullies, and generally it's fairly slow until a certain development towards the end recontextualises things.
I enjoyed this one! It's the first movie directed by Ariane Labed, who has been in things as an actor and is also married to forum favourite Yorgos Lanthimos. I wouldn't call it a masterpiece or anything, but I'll be on the lookout for more things from her.
8/10

Yeah the end was crap. But the rest I quite enjoyed.
Edit: with the huge caveat that it was probably my first cinema film after lockdown, which probably added +8 to my overall score.

Trap is a 5/10. It's too long, has too much concert footage trying to launch his daughter's singing career, too many random characters for no reason at all, and it doesn't end where it should, at least twice.
Go and see Borderlands instead, at least you'll be interesting.

Alien: Romulus (2024) - 75/100 - I've watched Alien and Aliens loads of times over the years, most recently last year - they are both 10/10 films for me. I've watched 3 and 4 a couple of times each, but not recently - from memory they are flawed but OK. Prometheus I saw in the cinema at release, and once again at home - preferred it the second time, but it's still a disappointment. Covenant I only watched once at home - utterly forgettable. I really enjoyed Romulus. It looked fantastic for the most part, a couple of ropey CGI sections let it down slightly, but the set design was spot on. The sound design is also fantastic and I thought most of the cast were great in their roles. Some solid tension but not really scary. There was a slight lull in the middle but it picks up pace at the end and I loved the final 15 minutes. They went to far with the throwbacks at one point and it felt totally unnecessary, but I didn't mind them retreading old ground as much as it seems to disappoint others. Overall I think it's the best since the original two films - not great but a worthy entry in the series. Pretty much this. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had not seen the trailer as the trailer pretty much shows you the whole movie!

As we are making this the Alien: Romulus thread, I'll chime in on a couple of points raised. CGI character was pretty rubbish. We've seen plenty of other androids, so not sure why it needed to be Ian Holm, besides for the 'member-berries. Even without the uncanny valley element, it would seem a bit pointless. No matter how often they try to bring back dead actors, it never works. The repeated shots didn't bother me too much, as I don't know the other films that well (seen the first one a few times, but not for a while, whilst I've seen Aliens, Alien3 and Resurrection maybe a couple of times, but a long time ago). Even for me though, some shots seemed very familiar. Obviously, THAT line was abysmal and very much a low point in the film. It was painfully delivered too, with half of it said and then the rest of it said just when you think maybe they aren't going to go all the way with it. It should knock a point of any score given to the film. Still though, I'm mostly with GamingDave's assessment. Those feel like fairly minor quibbles in the grand scheme of things and don't exactly take up much of the runtime. Not sure about a longer runtime, but definitely would have liked more at the start before they get up into space. Plus, it all seemed a bit easy for them to make this trip to the station. It wasn't amazing, but much better than I thought it would be. As for Old, it is rubbish, but quite enjoyable. The ending was totally unnecessary though.

Megalopolis (at an Imax cinemaaaaaaaaa)
Adam Driver stops time, builds walls and breaks other walls (INCLUDING THE FOURTH WALL), other people are there looking very confused. Jon Voight is there! Dustin Hoffman is there!
It's definitely a movie.
Is it a good movie? No, not really. But it is unique and interesting in its badness, and to me that makes it worth seeing. It was probably not worth Coppola spending $120m of his own money to make, but I guess that's for him to judge.
At any rate, it's probably the most expensive passion/vanity project you're ever likely to see.
Better than Avatar/10

I’ll have to see that at some point, if only because it’s been gestating for so long.

I think production/distribution companies were right to be a bit iffy about it, I highly doubt it's going to make anything close to a profit (though of course that's not why Coppola made it)
But yeah, people should go see it, for no other reason than because it exists.

Oh, that also reminds me, famed other $8m passion/vanity project The Fall is getting a 4k remaster and re-release soon. I really need to see that one in a cinema, that movie rules.

Not sure how correct this is as it was a long time ago and my memory of it is hazy, but I think I remember reading how at one point he wanted to make it only viewable at a specially built theatre somewhere in the desert.
So, I guess the question is, would you have enjoyed it more if you’d have watched it in the middle of a desert?

The movie is about building a city, so I think it might actually be neat to have an interactive screening in the middle of nowhere.

I mean vague spoilers I guess (I'll spoiler tag the previous post if people want), but there's a bit in it where a character in the movie is conversing with an (actor) member of the audience, who is reading from a script. It's like a bit of live theatre in the middle of the movie.

Re:Trap
I assume this is addressed in the movie, but if the authorities know who he is why don't they just go arrest him? And if they don't know who he is, how is he in any danger? Watch the concert and then go home.
