Re:Trap I assume this is addressed in the movie, but if the authorities know who he is why don't they just go arrest him? And if they don't know who he is, how is he in any danger? Watch the concert and then go home. That is stupid (their whole plan is stupid, really), but the explanation is that they don't know *exactly* what he looks like. All they have is "white dude in certain age range, with a distinctive tattoo on his wrist". So they know that he will be at the concert for some reason, but he could be one of about 3,000 similar guys. Which, again, is pretty dumb. But it's the kind of movie that you just have to roll with if you're going to have any fun.

Sasquatch Sunset
Jesse Eisenberg (also the producer) and Riley Keough play a mummy and daddy sasquatch, wandering around the forest with a small group of other bigfoots. Big... feet? There is love, discovery, masturbation and tragedy.
I think this might be my favourite Jesse Eisenberg performance. Largely because he's so made up in a bigfoot costume that he barely looks like Jesse Eisenberg, and he also doesn't speak any human dialogue. He's pretty good at that!
This movie is good too. Funny and sad, with some great scenery and amazing costumes.
8.5/10

I found a giant spider last week which I mentioned was big enough to be a promo for new film, so now it's called Romulus.

Seeing as Molar is talking about all his film festival films, I'll ask this here (and will be another post that isn't about Romulus).
Was thinking about possibly trying out the London Film Festival this year. Never been before (or any other film festival). Anyone ever been and know how it all works? Can I buy a ticket that gets access to loads of showings or can you only buy tickets for the individual events? If the latter, that sounds like it would get pretty expensive very quickly!
Tickets and information about what will be showing during the season aren't available until next month, so can't check this out yet. Also assume that the tickets go quick for the big showings. Is it worth getting the BFI membership to get access to the early sales?

I just meant that he always used to rag on us for talking about Alien (and how underrated Alien³ is)

I'm happy to pay dollar for cinema trips, but when I looked in LFF many moons ago they were about double the price of normal London tickets. Also with LFF being an autumn festival, you don't usually have to wait too long for all the Oscar bait to hit cinemas anyway.

But when I go to them, I usually prioritise seeing things that aren't just going to come out in general release soon afterwards. Haven't always managed that goal this year (a lot my sessions were booked because a friend wanted to see them), but that's the idea at least.

Alien (disney+)
Its been a few years since I last watched it and its, of course, a 10/10 all time classic. My main takeaway this time was realising or being reminded that its an even slower burn than I remembered. Even after the killings start its still an incredibly patient film and barely shifts in pace. Considering it only has seven characters and three locations the world building is so complete I reckon I could easily just watch a character drama on the Nostromo without the need for the monster stuff.

Shambhala
A Tibetan woman gets married in a Himalayan polyandrous village. One of her dickhead husbands gets in a strop and runs off when he hears that their imminent child was fathered by another one of her husbands, and she goes after him, through the mountains while heavily pregnant.
(I know that Buddhism is meant to be above pretty grievances, but seriously, fuuuuuuuuck that guy)
Anyway, being filmed in the Nepali Himalayas, it's predictably an absolutely stunning looking movie. Thankfully not as melodramatic as it could have been, it's very quiet and spiritual and subtly subversive in commentary about culture and gender and all that. It's got a 2.5 hour runtime, but I didn't feel it at all.
9/10

Elvis 9/10. Thought this was tremendous, especially Austin Butler & Tom Hanks performances. It’s not a man or story I knew much about besides the cruel jokes, but it got me in the feels a few times. It rattles along Baz Luhrman busy, flashy style but it does suit the movie. I’m glad I didn’t have to decide who got the Best Actor Oscar
Highly recommended

I’ve been quite enjoying not being aggressively told I don’t know anything because I dared to compare The Lego Movie to Barbie.

Young Woman and the Sea (2024) *** Basically a Sunday tea-time drama of a film, the kind of thing you can watch with your nanna. Daisy Ridley does a decent job as the first woman to swim the channel, coming up against obvious sexism but persevering. Good support from Christopher Ecclestone as a Bad Man and Stephen Graham as a Good Man. Predictable but enjoyable. (Disney+)
Freaky Friday (2003) *** Beloved bodyswap comedy of the 90s. Truth be told it's aged a bit, and not just because Lindsey Lohan is dressed like she's about to sing Sk8er Boi. These things live or die on the performances of the swapped characters, and thankfully Lohan & JLC do a terrific job, despite the script being mostly first-base and their problems feeling rather manufactured and sitcom-y. As a kids' film it does its job well. Looking forward to next year's belated sequel. (Disney+)

I can’t remember if its you who’d also seen it or not but if you haven’t then check out Wicked Little Letters. Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley, similar Sunday teatime vibe but with some absolutely first rate swearing throughout. Its very good. On Netflix or D+ I think.

A film that I was glad I saw in the cinema, a good crowd pleaser when the swearing is firing out like a machine gun! It's on Netflix UK.

I watched these last two with my nine year old daughter so I might watch Wicked Little Letters after she's gone to bed 😉
