I don't think I've seen 3. Agree otherwise, watched 1 the other month.

Across the Spiderverse -9/10. Best superhero films ever imo. Love the style, the sass and some great characters that are way deeper than you'd expect.

Uncut Gems - 8/10
Felt like an enjoyable antihero movie, moving along at a slightly frantic pace... Then bam, that ending... Wow.

The Night of the 12th
French film from 2022 (La Nuit du 12) based on a true and unsolved (not a spoiler) murder investigation. Very noir in style and atmosphere, it focuses mainly on the impact that the invesigation has on the detectives, and the theme of gender-based violence. It's all handled in a very understated way that some might find boring but I found to be realistic and quite captivating. Performances are great across the board. Just a really well made and intelligent film about a horrible topic.

Watched Annette at the weekend and it has stayed with me since. It is a musical written by Sparks and directed Leos Carax (of Holy Motors), starring Adam Driver, Marion Cotillard and that guy from The Big Bang Theory (no, not that one, the other one. No, the other one). It tells the story of a comedian and opera singer's relationship, and their (puppet) daughter. Mileage might vary for those depending on thoughts on Sparks, but I thought the music was fantastic throughout. The opening "So May We Start" is an absolute banger and sets the playful tone for the film. There is also the beautiful, but ironic, simplicity of "We Love Each Other So Much". Then there is the funny and silly "I'm an Accompanist", followed later by "The Conductor". Then there is the closing "Sympathy for the Abyss", when the daughter confronts her father and it is electric between Driver and the very young co-star. The plot is a simple one, but oozes operatic tragedy. But, it also skims over some bits and pieces that deserved more time. Which is odd, as it is also a fairly slow 2 hours 20 minutes and feels like it could have been easily under 2 hours. There are some long sections showing Driver's Henry McHenry's comedy show, which have some merit, but also take up large sections of the film without really progressing the story much. Anne and Henry's relationship (and it's decline) needed more, as did the career of Annette and the haunting of Henry by Anne , but we get long sections of stage performances instead. The highs are really high and I can see myself listening to the soundtrack a lot (already listened to an abridged version today), but it is also left me a little disappointed that the execution of the story wasn't handled differently. Not sure if there was a lot cut or if it just needed another few passes on the script. Still though, I loved a lot of it. If you like Sparks, then it is definitely a must watch.

Scream 2 - 9/10
Watched the next film in the franchise with my eldest. I think this one gets a bad rap as it was rushed out at the time. I've no idea why as it's about as good a sequel as you can expect. It also has an absolutely stacked cast (some great some not so great):
Neve Campbell Courtney Cox David Arquette Liev Schreiber Jada Pinkett Smith Omar Epps Jerry O'Connell Timothy Olyphant Heather Graham Jamie Kennedy Sarah Michelle Gellar Tori Spelling Luke Wilson Lori Metcalf Joshua Jackson Rebecca Gayheart Portia de Rossi
Plus loads of great kills. I might actually prefer this one to the first...
Looking forward to 3 next but I'm pretty sure its diminishing returns now until we get to the modern ones.

Indiana Jones. Dial of Destiny
Ok I guess. Film from direction through to Indy himself was about as creaky as his knees with Phoebe Waller Bridge still in Fleabag mode. It’s just very flat. It has all the things that are in Indiana Jones films but it just feels a little bit passionless and limp and that comes down to a pretty lifeless script and direction. Having said that I did think the end showpiece was kinda cool but then they didn’t really do anything with it.

You could sum up the film with those final few words "they didn't really do anything with it".

The Zone of Interest
3 minutes of film, 102 minutes of direction. Makes the average Wes Anderson film look like an exercise in subtlety and restraint. It’s so incredibly obnoxious that it distracts from everything else.
Fortunately there’s little else to distract from. The entire plot can be summed up as “man’s job is relocated”. There are two or three moments when a line is dropped that makes you think “that could be an interesting concept to explore”, before being immediately discarded.
Rudolph Höss has very bad hair, Sandra Hüller is great, Jonathan Glazer has no self restraint. It very much gives the impression that the director sees this as a deep work of art with a meaningful commentary on the holocaust, I saw it as a demonstration that if you take less is more to its conclusion you end up with nothing.
3/10

Alone (2020) - All4 - 7/10
Short, tight, albeit well-trodden horror about a woman who gets kidnapped in rural US of A. Think Wolf Creek but less gratuitous.
Incidentally, there are a lot of really great films on All4...

If scream 2 is better than one, why did you score it lower, then eh? You think these scores don't matter.
I'm watching you, Clem. You little bullshitter you.

The problem I had with scream 2 was that I guessed who the killer was in about the first 10 minutes, which kinda ruined it. The problem with the sequels, for me, was more that it just got increasingly ridiculous and convoluted, rather than the films themselves becoming terrible.
I still can't remember if I've seen #4, but I assume by that point Ghostface was actually Sydney's cousin's boyfriend's ex-hairdresser's neighbour who was out for revenge.

S2 definitely suffers from being a rush job and a cash grab. It's a beat for beat retread, but worse.
S1 is a legit good movie, no "....for a horror film" qualifier needed. The final act at the house party is just brilliant. Compare that to the flat and weirdly empty feeling finale in the theatre for S2.
S1 stands up to repeated viewing. Do the same with S2 and you just see it's shortcomings more clearly.
S3 has it's issues, and tried too hard to be wacky, but it's now more interesting being a film about an film executive who demands sexual favours from young actors if the want a career in Hollywood....that was itself exec produced by Weinstein himself. I mean, they knew right?
S4 does suffer from the all the clichés in the series starting to get tired, but it's a better film than all of them bar S1. It's the sequel that 2 should have been. Though it's a bit more "middle aged slasher" rather than teen slasher at this point.

I saw Scream on release and loved it. And then - I remember this vividly - the entire narrative around Scream 2 was that it was one of those sequels that's better than the original. It got great reviews and everyone I know who saw it raved about it. I remember it had meta gags about both sequels and trilogies (because we knew going in they intended to make a part 3). So I was hyped.
And I didn't much care for it. It totally evaporated my enthusiasm for the series, especially as the vibe around Scream 3 was that it wasn't as good as the first two. So I've never seen another one, and I've not seen the first two since the cinema.

Twisters - 6/10
More competent than I expected, after listening to the Kermode review. I thought the characterisation was good enough to get behind, and it didn't feel like a slog. Fairly enjoyable on the whole, although last week I was also thankful to be sitting in a cool room for 2 hours.

I watched all the Scream films earlier this year and I honestly think 2 is the worst. I remember not exactly loving it at the cinema either and the rewatch all those years later didn't change my opinion of it. 1 is legitimately great, 3 I enjoyed more than 2 but only just. 4 is decent but 5 and 6 just go weird. They're alright films I suppose but I don't think it's helped by the fact that watching the franchise in a row in a short space of time, you can't help but notice how Courtney Cox's face slowly seems to transform into the Scream mask.

I need to restart from #3 I think. I remember 1 clearly, and large parts of 2. I've seen #3 but remember very little, and I don't *think* I've seen 4.
Or maybe I should just start with the new Scream and all the new cast. (#5?)

Scream 2 is always thoroughly odd to watch when they start using the Broken Arrow soundtrack. That theme is so synonymous with Woo's film that it feels odd to just lift it wholesale and use it elsewhere.
But yeah 1 is genuinely great still. The rest (new and old) are just throwaway whodunnits. They're like watching Midsummer Murders, shite really, but you want to know who the killer is.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
What you expect for a Guy Ritchie war film. Not a big boomer but competent, entertaining and strangely likeable in places.

I do wonder if I watched the early Screams again if I'd find them really smug and clever-clever, the way I do with a lot of the ironic/meta stuff from the 90s that I used to love so much.

Yeah there was a lot of hype and raving about scream 2 at release. It really was just riding the wave of the first one. It came less than a year after it, so people were still pumped. It could take a year for a film to go from cinema to home video in those days.
Away from all that hype tho: meh.
