Porco Rosso (1994) **** I’d never really seen this before, a rather idiosyncratic slice of Ghibli. Its unique setting gives it a great flavour, with gloriously rickety 1920s aircraft dogfighting over gorgeous blue seas and Mediterranean islands. Full of the kind of stillness and quietness that you rarely get in Western animation. Perhaps it’s a bit slight to be a masterpiece, but it’s beautiful and quirky and interesting and funny. And I’d rather be a pig than a fascist, too. (Netflix)

a couple of films from last weekend
Furiosa
I enjoyed it but it was not a masterpiece like Fury road was. Hemsworth played dementus really well as it was more than just "drunk or crazy aussie thor". Anya is a really great actress but she didn't have much to work with here. One thing they make a big deal about Immortan joe wanting Furiosa when she is younger but when she quickly escapes, everyone just forgets about her This film and fury road did badly at the box office irrc, its a shame we are not going to get any more from GM
8/10
Dune part 2
Really liked part 1 but found part 2 a struggle to get through, it drags and is disappointing. Its looks great etc etc but The Harkonnens were even more one-dimensional bad guys, austin butler's character was really awful. Chalamet's character worked in part 1 but don't buy him as this rebel leader, he is more suited to some rom-com.
6/10

Blue Beetle (SKY)
I didn’t hate it because hating it would be like hating magnolia paint, which is just as bland and inconsequential
But yeah a very, very poor movie on every level. Just plain bad

Madame web
Wanted to see how bad it was but would never pay rental or see it at cinema. Its just awful on every level, acting, script, directing, its like CW ep of the arrow-verse slop. They didn't even have the full line from the trailer of “He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders… right before she died." I remember reading they tried to fix the film with reshoots and even badly dubbing new lines
They have kraven out this year (unless that gets pushed back to early next year) and that looks as good as this and morbius

Inside Out 2: 6/10
I liked the new complex emotions, and the whole Beliefs thing resonated, but it was really a rehash of the first.
It still made my eyes leak though. 🥺

I won't argue with it being shit, or some of the awful lines, overdumbs or exposition.
But I did rather like the central part of
Her using her time powers to try and keep the girls alive. At least it was different from most superhero movies that are just big powerful entities hitting/zapping each other. This was almost like Live Die Repeat in places.

Godzilla Minus One
Really good. Takes time to establish characters and the melodrama is balanced very well with the Godzilla sequences, so unlike a lot of Hollywood spectacle films you actually care about the characters, and the themes about the devestation of war and survivors guilt actually feed into the set pieces.
And then when the set pieces do turn up they're very spectacular and awe-inspiring.

if it was even half as good as that film's premise then it would of saved the film but that part felt like, don't do X to get to the next part

Wait. Are you saying you PIRATED Madam Web? That’s the darkest of the dark web.

The main bad guy talks in a pirate voice, if that helps.

I think Madame Web could have scraped a 4/10 of Dakota Johnson had any acting talent at all. She epitomises sounding like she’s reading the words, badly.

I thought she improved after the initial exposition-bit.
But I'm not sure how much was her fault. The guy playing her partner was just as bad at the beginning, so I think it was largely down to the dialogue.
She was fine when chatting with the girls. Then she was crap again at the end, but I'm not sure anyone could have made that work. And the bad guy was worse, so I'm thinking it was the dialogue and/or direction.
Not seen her in anything else though.

I don't rate her as a particularly good actress, she does fulfil a lot of the nepo baby clichés.

Crazy, Stupid, Love.
A welcome rewatch. Great performances, fun dialogue, and Gosling’s abs. It’s a rom-com technically speaking but it’s head and shoulders above most of the competition. Love it!
9/10
Under Paris
Was happy to watch something daft, but this really is a stinker. I had to check my TV was in the right mode more than once - it looks that bad. I’ve never bothered, with the sharknado movies, but if they’re as bad as this I worry for humanity.

Inside Out 2 being the biggest animated opening ever is a bit of a surprise. I've come to the conclusion that box office returns this year are just crazy-random.
Under Paris has been getting very good reviews, though from the outside it looks like the 8000 other cheap shark movies on all the streaming services.

Love it! 9/10 This is a guilty pleasure of mine for sure. Gosling is perfectly cast, he's awful but in a fun way.
Also Marisa Tomei.

That is very interesting, because the first film - whilst a big hit - didn't have the billion-plus takings that were becoming common at the time. I thought it'd hit about $600m worldwide, but it's had a bigger weekend than Mario last year, so it's almost certainly going to make over $1b. As someone who finds box office data fascinating (probably the wonkiest side of my film-geekery) I do wonder how Despicable Me 4 will perform. All the the other films (inc. Minions) since the first one have been in the billion-dollar mark and I thought it would end up the biggest film of the year. Maybe I was wrong!

I can only assume it's down to a fairly dry spell of animated features so far this year. Apart from Kung Fu Panda 4 and Garfield, there's not been much else (no, I'm not counting one of those effing Boonie Bears films from China). Maybe parents rushed them to cinemas after a long spell of nothing, and it probably helped that the original was held in strong regard - it's the first animated feature this year that parents may actually be able to enjoy with the kids. (No shade on any Kung Fu Panda fans).

Inside out was mostly brilliant, and those parents (myself included) that saw that with very young children will now have teenagers - it’s rather clever from Pixar to follow it up in more or less the same timeline.

(No shade on any Kung Fu Panda fans). See also Migration, which was a perfectly serviceable film, but stayed in the box office far, far longer than anyone would expect. I can only assume that was because nothing else came out for kids (other than KFP4, but I understand from the parents of nephews that no one had an enjoyable time with that one). Judging by the bazillion ads for Despicable Me 4 ahead of Inside Out 2 when I saw it on Saturday, I assume they are hoping for it to do well.

Inside Out 1 was good, but I don't remember it being especially popular. It wouldn't be the pixar sequel I'd pick to blow up huge. Then again, what do I know.
Anyway, all this talk of Marissa Tomei has made me want to rewatch My Cousin Vinny...

It’ll be interesting to see how Moana 2 does later this year.

I took the family to a kids' screening of Migration at half term, and with the caveat that it was both a kids' screening and half term, it was a packed cinema. Which did surprise me a bit, because the film had been out for about four months at that point.
Moana will be interesting, because the first film (IIRC) was perceived as a minor disappointment financially, "only" grossing somewhere in the $500m mark or thereabouts, and I think some people were hoping it would do Frozen numbers. But like Inside Out it tends to be a film that people really, really praise, and I bet loads of kids have seen it on DVD/Disney+, so I think the sequel will do better. How much better, who knows?

I prefer Moana to Inside Out and for a long while Moana was the only film my son would watch. I know children won’t care but I do worry that a sequel will do what Frozen 2 did and take a fun adventure with excellent songs and turn it into an overlong lore dump.

Purely anecdotal but could the uptick in box office returns for kids films be linked to the shitty weather? We've taken our kids to the cinema more in the last 6 months just due to the fact it's been constantly raining.
