Existenz -sorry, "eXistenZ" - is another. Was that a late era Cronenberg? It was 25 years ago and he’s still making films now, so no, not really.

Small world, Kurt wimmer also directed ‘one tough bastard’ starring Brian bosworth which I reviewed on here a few days ago. Thoroughly recommended 90s action crap with an amazing Bruce Payne as the villain 👍 Is it better than Stone Cold? Not really, as its not as entertainingly stupid and over the top. However Bruce Payne is a lot better villain than the duo of Henricksen and Forsythe, it really needs to be watched by everybody to see the absolute zenith of what Rickman started in Die Hard.

Could Probably a plot a bell curve of the prevelance of "questioning reality" themes in films over a 20 year period, starting with Total Recall in 1990, peaking in the late 90's, then coming back down until it reaches Inception in 2010.

If I remember rightly, Existenz features Jude Law try to break reality by attempting an American accent.

Pretty sure I've seen a film with him attempting a Scottish accent trapped in a submarine.

Cronenberg was my favourite director at one point. He's got a great varied selection of films, but since Eastern Promises he's been a bit shite.

He’s kept evolving, which I admire. Cosmopolis and Map to the Stars are difficult films but they’re not shit.
Haven’t seen Crimes of the Future yet but it’s supposed to be a bit more old school and is also supposed to be decent.

Just had a look at his wiki page and pretty much everything he's done recently has completely passed me by. Might try and check them out. They don't seem to have reviewed too badly.
Existenz was shit though. It does feel like a "late career" type thing as it feels so hamfisted in trying to be all zeitgeisty.

I know it's fun to shit all over blockbuster, but at least you were likely to find anything which had come out in recent years. Such a fucking pain in the arse trying to work out which streaming platform has what so you can watch the bloody thing.

Even when it was the DVD mail rental services like lovefilm, at least they had almost everything you wanted to find. You had to wait for it to become available perhaps, but you didn't even have to consider trying another service because of that reason.

Give it a watch I'm sure you will enjoy it. The courthouse gunfight in Stone Cold must go down as the biggest action movie death scene on record, its quite incredible to behold

I miss Lovefilm. Game and Bluray rental that was easy to manage. Only thing that was frustrating were boxsets were disc by disc instead of the whole thing.
Luckily Boomerang took up the game rental side.

Lovefilms catalogue was amazing, had pretty much anything you could want. Streaming services have eaten themselves.

I know it's fun to shit all over blockbuster, but at least you were likely to find anything which had come out in recent years. Such a fucking pain in the arse trying to work out which streaming platform has what so you can watch the bloody thing. The most annoying thing is the way they keep moving around. Watched Back to the Future 1 on one service that had all three.
But by a few weeks later when we anted to watch #2 they'd all left. Later found all 3 on itvX, but again by the time we wanted to watch #3 they'd all gone. The Star Trek movies seemed to have a home on Channel 4 for a long time, but now I think they've moved somewhere else.
The karate kid movies keep appearing and disappearing in random order. Managed to catch #1, but didn't have a chance to watch #2 before they'd moved on.
I guess you could say it's better than old broadcast tv when you only had one chance to catch it when it aired, and if you missed it you'd probably have to wait years, but it feels much more annoying to me.
I've taken to just putting everything I have a vague interest in onto my Justwatch wishlist, and setting up the services I have available, and then when I want to watch something I pull up the list and see what's available.
It doesn't really handle access to multiple regions very well.

If you're doing rentals then I feel like it's a bit easier. But if you're doing subscriptions/free services then it's a right pain. (Eg: you can rent most movies from Amazon, but the ones available on Prime are very variable)

That just reminded me - Existenz was a Love Film rental for me. Think I doubled it up with Videodrome.

It's been said several times before but justwatch.com is your friend. This ones more of a whinge of when the film/show you want to watch isn't on any of the services. Like The Witch that I thought I'd finally get around to watching. Look on just watch and it's rental only.

Feel like this is whatever the opposite of recency bias is. Renting a film off Apple or Amazon is far quicker and easier than old rental services like Blockbuster or Lovefilm, and the film is more likely to be there especially on a Saturday night.

That was 1 monthly fee though. Now you subscribe to multiple services and still have to pay extra to rent some stuff.

That coupled with "ffs, I pay for these services and it's not on there" syndrome.

Was just about to post this as well. Still use them and they are great. Really good catalogue, where I've rarely not been able to find what I'm after. Personally, I also like the fact I can just have a big selection of films on my list and watch whatever it is that turns up at the door. With streaming, I spend all my time deciding what to watch and then realise I don't have any time left to actually watch a film.

It’s not how I remember Blockbuster working. You paid per video you wanted.
Lovefilm was its own thing and again I think highly romanticised as a service in relation to streaming platforms.

Trouble is, even if I did go back to hard copy, the kids are so used to having stuff on tap, we'd have to sub to streaming anyway.

I do think streaming is great, I just wish it wasn't so fractured.

Yeah I’d say the fair comparisons are with Blockbuster versus Apple/Amazon renting services, and then Lovefilm with Netflix and the like.
